Some moments make a teacher inordinately proud, and dear Jael, today was one of those. To have been your teacher is the greatest of honors.

Congratulations, cousin. I am still impressed regarding that bow that you have. It is an exceptional work of art. I actually had a favor to ask you, concerning it...

What do you get when you cross a Templar with a wedding planner?

A devout devotional for the devotions of the devoted.

The Templar I told it to hated it.

Ribbons, don't. Trust me. When it stops being easy - then, then you offer the flowers of words. Not until then.

Tournaments have become extremely popular, but then, it seems useful for us to know how to coordinate and fight as a team. I am somewhat glad to sit out and watch. There's a lot to be learned by watching people fight, but sitting on the sidelines and observing is educational as well. Just because someone is out early doesn't mean they're not a good fighter. If anything, it often means that they're a threat, to be taken out quickly. Sometimes the lesser fighters get picked off, but it's generally once the biggest threat to one's own team has been eliminated.

I was very glad so many people were interested in indulging me with an impromptu training center spar. The Compact has brought up some incredible fighters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. I am glad to see them improving.

Then you are confident in your archery skills, Baroness. You only need to realize that and be comfortable with the realization. Underestimating what you can do can be just as damaging as overestimating. By the way, I hope you will offer your cartography per my request at the tavern. It is spectacular.

I was able to observe hairpins in action last night. While I could not ever see myself wielding one, there was a certain amount of pleasure in seeing what they could do even among the only partially trained. A valuable weapon for sure, and one I am quite happy some ladies have begun to bare.

I won 3rd place in the archery contest. Not because I was the most skilled. Or because I took the hardest shots. I understood what I could and could not do, framed the shot that I knew I could hit and then trusted my own instincts. There's a lesson there I think.

I attended the play, Besieged, that everyone was gossiping about. A satire of sorts I suppose. A view of the war from the commoner's perspective. Sure, it has biting wit. I enjoyed some of the bittersweet interplay between some of the characters. The irreverent view of their commander was a bit amusing at times. There were some thought provoking questions given by the characters at the end. Questioning their role in a bigger story when their commanders left them in the dark. A biting call for nobles to do a better job.

It was a bit one sided for me. I would have preferred perhaps a few monologues from the commander in the story. A discussion of his fears, his own frustrations on being asked to lead but not being given all the facts himself. The guilt that one feels when men are lost. I think there was an opportunity there to show a deeper dynamic that the playwright missed. Some opportunities for comedy that would have given this commander some depth. Perhaps would have shown the duality between class lines. Led to a deeper discussion on what makes someone fit to command.

This criticism does not mean that I didn't enjoy the play. I did in it's context. It did an excellent job of expressing the views of the playwright. Left the audience with strong feelings. Brought a perspective that is rarely seen. I like the message it tried to convey, that we can all do better.

Relationship Note on Talen

Lately I have noticed the method in which Talen has managed to ruffle the feathers of some high society socialites. Generally I try to keep gripes beneath me where they belong, rarely will I post complaint about someone or something. I admit there are some I do not like or perhaps outright hate, but I shall not lower myself to speak of them.

Talen is certainly an exception to this. He is quite vexing no? Everyone can see it, be it someone alive now to experience this vex, or one not born for hundreds of years, they will look back, at the story of Talen and understand vex. Now am I particularly vexed by him, not as most, but rather a product of. As someone whom rather enjoys the art of the vex, what vexes me is to be out vexed, or perhaps out vexing by such a vexing little vex as that vex.

So there are few things worthy of gripe and complaint, and to speak poorly of someone whom I find vexing or worse is truly beneath me. I only wish it were so easy to pretend Talen did not exist.

Relationship Note on Victus

My Brother Prince Valen taught it to me when I was his squire. My brother Prince Vance even had to pay him a healthy purse of silver because he thought I'd not be courageous enough to use it! Clearly that the woman thought it might have meant I was offering to 'peal her eggs' was due to some regional dialect difference.
