My thanks for your suggestion on a place of reflection. It has taken me some time to make my way, but the quiet was what you had suggested.

I mean, Victus, you're not completely off the mark. I'm not saying I didn't invite the King because of his past foray into group hunting parties, but...

Also, I'm sure he's incredibly busy.

Unlike you other High Lords.

Happy birthday my dearest friend! I shall join you at 35 in 17 days. Though I will be the one to bring the sweets! Seems only fair.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

So, today is rather auspicious. Not only is it my birthday, it's that day of the Month that Archduchess Eleyna Velenosa offers me a gift to persuade me into her patronage.

She has outdone herself.

In a box of fine wood, I was presented with a bottle the hues of a sunset. Within it, the Archduchess has crafted with her own hands a scented oil so perfect, I can barely describe it. It in the note she sent with it, she describes the use of plumeria, vanilla, and ginger.

I can't single them out, all I experience upon inhalation is an image of the Chains, my mother, a garden hidden away to the south, a cool breeze off the sands....

I've been told by others that the Archduchess hardly ever bothers to give out such things, that she uses her skills for her own personal needs. I can write but speaking on it... I lose my ability. That I am one of the favored, blessed few... I am honored, stunned, awed, and so very humbled by this gift, which I am accepting as a -birthday present- and nothing else, my dear Lady.

Many think me callous. Remorseless.

They would not be wholly wrong. We live in a world ruled by cruel fate, where death and sorrow are the inevitable rule. The only answer for the dark works of those working beyond the mirror is violence in reflection. We ward ourselves with faith and steel, and grim resolve to not be overcome, not with pleasant distractions or regrets.

The Siege of the Silence saw many die, commoners and nobles alike. Both died to either side of me, man and woman, noble and commoner. Those I commanded, and those who stood in command of me. Blood doesn't remember its color when spilled in pools on the flagstones. Blood doesn't remember where it came from, other than the split veins from whence it drained.

You would be wrong in thinking that my disdain for death shows I care little for the common born. No. I judge the peers who hide behind the shields of their men, who stray from their duties as harshly as I do the commoner who would shirk theirs. Worse, even, for there is nothing more despicable than the dereliction of duty gone allowed by birth, privilege or coin.

Do you think me happy to be a peer? To be a target from youth, with my brothers and sisters drowned next to me for revenge. To be held a ward to ensure the compliance of my family. To be handed the helm of a ship, the lives of men, and the duty to stand against the Deeps. To look at my county, and those who have found happiness, and tell them every hope they may have might soon be washed away. To be responsible for the defense of the Darkwater Redoubt against the Marin, and in it the lives of those who offer themselves to fight the dark.

No, I am not happy. But I am proud, honored to have a place in the fight. I feel a keen pressure and duty to every one of my marines, sailors, and subjects. And I have sacrificed everything I have, and everything I am, to that duty.

That is why words and accusatory fingers pointed, by those who have sacrificed /nothing/, rankle like venom. They are the words of vipers, poisoning the resolve to shoulder the duty we have to those we have lost, and the resolve for those left to stand together, in the moment of trial. That is the true tragedy.

Those who died to face the dark deserve honor, no matter their background. We do that by bearing the torment of remembrance, of sorrow and despair in our hearts. We honor them by overcoming that, and facing forward into the tumult to come.

If you think that a cruel and harsh burden...

You'd be right.

I'm still nursing my bruises, so I'm inclined to think the Grayson Free-for-All was a good one. I particularly enjoyed fleeing pies. Some of the pies. I got hit by a few of them, but it was all in good fun and my armor is none the worse for it now that it's gotten a deep cleaning.

It is well to clash with so many fine warriors and friends and allies, with true war on the horizon. I look forward to meeting the many fine blades of this city again in the upcoming Tournament of Gloria. May all our blades be guided in honor and good sportsmanship.

I have been neglectful in that I have not written of three members of my family arriving to Arx before now. The brothers Theron and Giulio, and Dianna's own sister Alessia have all recently made the arduous journey across the Compact to join us here within the capital. Seeing their faces again after so long further eases the burden upon my heart, for I have made no secret of my longing for home. I am only too sure that Dianna is thrilled to be reunited with Alessia. Theron, of course, has done exactly what I expected of him, and that is thrive. Of Giulio, what can I write that the Inquisition will not ask to be redacted?

(I write in jest, of course).

The days may be dark, but one when is surrounded by family, even the most daunting of tasks no longer seem impossible.

Relationship Note on Eshra

She is just as annoying, as ever and trying to make me grow up, and place away silly, things. But dearest sister honor does not mean boring and dull, remember that and we both honor our families. But sometimes fun is the cure, and sometimes study, and sometimes war, but always in love and kindness.

I've perused the Archives, found some interesting things people wrote about but I really came here to document one thing. My thanks. Thank you to all my friends and allies here in Arvum. I am eternally grateful for the graciousness and kindnesses you all continue to shower upon me, despite my trivial social slip ups.

Even if I am overwhelmed by the invitations of companionship, you're /all/ so very special and wonderful! May we spend more time together soon eh?

Don't worry. Abandoned tribes that stay too close to you can end up conveniently disappearing even when the Templars or local forces aren't called on to officially remove them. Tribes that mistake this kind of thing for kindness tend to end up paying their own prices for it sooner or later, whether it's at the hands of the Faith militant or not.

No one tells me about the dangerous shit they're going to run out and do and I suspect it's because I'll find them and throw things at them, whether they stay home safe or run out and come home safe.

I swear to all the Gods, caring for people drives you insane.

When you've got the time and the inclination, come have some pie or stew or scones, dammit, so I can inspect your person and know you're in one piece. And there will be hugs, dammit, and you'll ... just ... deal with it.

Tonight, we move to find a stag. Hunting trips shared between leaders don't have the most sorted history's of ending well, but I feel decently enough about this one.

Worst come worst, I got Faith that Talen ain't gonna hear the end of it from either of our wives if I wind up dead. And I feel Edain's shield gives out, the man himself will make an excellent shield also. Darren probably wrestled a bear...

Anyway, onward boys, let's do it.

Relationship Note on Aiden

The new First Seeker, Prince Aiden, will do wonders with his new position as the Voice of the Explorers. As per my request Vellichor, the scholars alerted me when the ink dried on his newest white journal. After reading it I have few words to offer but here lie my praises immortalized (hopefully).

Excellent choice of first words.

He values the thoughts of his fellow Explorers and seems eager to know their faces and deeds. Responsibility incarnate this one.

Relationship Note on Laric

Allow it to be known that if Prince Laric ever did decide to join the Faith, it would be awkward to turn him down. Not because of his grasp of doctrine, which meets and even exceeds those who have devoted time to the Faith before, but because of his sure devotion to his spouse and his children. They would sorely miss him, I'm sure, and the Faith would never advocate severing those bonds, no matter how much we might be strengthened by his wisdom and, yes, occasional piety.

It is good to see that more than the godsworn do read and understand their scriptures.
