I'm away.

I thought i had something more to write about it, but I don't. If I die on this adventure, pack all my things in a sealed stone coffer beneath a tasteful statue in my honor near Oakhaven so that my next incarnation might someday find and collect them.

Leave the following inscription on the base of the statue:

Lady Amari, the White Heart of Keaton, first of her kind. Knight of Oakhaven, figure of minor significance.
"Maybe don't, next time?"

A second successful reaving into the Saffron chain in as many months. Less lucrative than the first, but still a fair voyage that saw near a hundred souls delivered from bondage, and freebooters set to good work.

The lesson of this voyage is that hungry folk will eat. You can't tell them not to, all a body can do is point them at the most fit meal. They may acquire a taste for it.

Do you know what is amazing? When you start getting answers to things you've had questions to YOUR WHOLE LIFE! I'm so so excited! Can't you tell?!

Relationship Note on Neilda

Neilda is back from whatever adventure she was off doing. I've never been so happy to see anyone. Well I have, but Neilda has a way of not telling me no. And telling me to do it anyway. Be fearless.

And yes, Miranda! That damn rope was terrible! Teach me your ways.

This week has been long and strange. Exhausting in its own way. More revealing than I'd like it to be in others. I've missed opportunities. I'm still trying to find time to meet with Lady Esme to ride and talk. Things left vague for too long can grow a life of their own. I have also lost time to try to stop in and see the Whispers. And talk to Master Apollo, Professor Orick...

There needs to be more of me. Or less to do.

On the upside, I have been riding more. What Dame Leola has taught Narciso and I have been paying off. We work very well together now. I should take Azure and Azul to meet her.

I've never been one to adore being in leathers nor armor; but, gracious gods, today I was surely glad I was wearing some. Truly, that white hart jerkin I got from Master Apollo certainly saved my life. That damn 'Toad' almost cut me in half with his sword. But, hey, this is the type of things one must face when helping patrol the caravans moving through the Great Road.

We have made a stop at an Inn. Somewhere along the way between Arx and Brighthold. The driver has told us to keep a low profile. I'm trying my best to do as instructed, and blend in; However, the task might be a tiny bit hard to follow, considering the flashy weapons we carry and our armor.

Relationship Note on Neilda

The sense of relief on seeing Neilda back home was immense. If anything had happened to her I would have felt I had failed in what Estaban wanted most, keeping his sisters, his family safe.

Relationship Note on Cassandra

I had the distinct pleasure of running into my cousin, Legate Cassandra Laurent, while having tea at the Mercier's with Sir Austen. Duties seem to keep she and I from catching up much, but it's such a joy when our paths do cross. Not only that, I was given the great honor of having my diamondplate quill blessed. The prayer she offered was truly moving, and reminded me why so many look to her as the Sword of the Faith. How fortunate I am to claim her as a relative and friend.

As I was helpless to be of assistance to Lord Alecstazi after he so valiantly Championed Oddmun in the duel of the horses, I took it upon myself to seek out instruction in the medical arts. It does seem there is a bit of confusion, though, as Oddmun and others believe I would become a Mercy. This, I could not do, as I refuse to forsake Limerance. However, I can and likely will join the Physician's Guild when it is appropriate to do so.

War contains so much folly and wickedness that much is to be hoped from the progress of reason. And if any thing is to be hoped, every thing ought to be tried.

Of all the enemies to public liberty war is the most to be dreaded. It comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts; from these proceed taxes; and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, the power of the tyrant is extended; its reward of offices, honors, and emoluments is praised; and all the means of seducing the minds are added to those of oppression.

Thus, the malignancy which may be traced to the inequality of fortunes and the opportunities of fraud thence grow out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals engendered by both. No nation therefore can preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

Though much of our reckoning toward ships and the sea has been upended of late, some truths still hold as they long have:
The longship remains the best raiding craft yet devised.
The dromond remains the best craft for pitched battle.
Galleys serve both roles, second best.
Caravels are unmatched for capacity and range; yet they've not displaced the ships that came before, not when it comes to the waging of war.

You're lucky I'm not baking cookies.

If I didn't kill it to eat it and there's no cookfire, I can't cook it.

... Even then. It's pretty bland.

Relationship Note on Ian

Seven years Lord Ian and I have been friends and shared good times and bad ones. The gods must be watching over us for us to have survived as long as we have. And oh, I do hope he will NOT share his glitter with me, I have enough to cope with the things the twins manage to do.

A fair number of people turned out to the Gauntlet event that Dame Harthall and I hosted. I was rather surprised by the number, myself, but all in all it went very well. If anything, it was very educational as to just how many people, of common roots and of the peerage, could handle being put through a grueling series of challenges.

I want to leave record here of my appreciation to Dame Bree for her assistance in handling some of the details, as well as keeping track of the scores everyone earned. I do not think I could have done it as well without the help, so I demonstrate my gratitude here for everyone to see.

Prayers and fasting, then eat an evening meal with the hangry extended family. It's been some days now, and I still have a week to go. Most days I don't notice being hungry because meals for me have always been catch as catch can sort of thing when we are not dining 'in-state.' Just now I am so hungry, I could eat a baby. Yes, brother, that was a Thrax JOKE.

The prayer at the Shrine of the Sentinel has been harder. In doing this for one family, I have been confronting whether or the choices I made, the horrible things I suffered to happen, the people that died because of me... can that ever be made right? I don't know. I have agreed to talk through some of it with Blessed Avary. Sometimes, they say, talking helps.
