Today it is my pleasure to say I have finally found a patron. Princess Macda will no doubt open new doors of experience for me, and I only pray to Vellichor that I can provide her what she seeks in return.

Winter has come and with it the warmth of happy acquaintances new and renewed.

Many new friends and connections made. Many new friends seen after my absence from society. The weather is refreshing and bracing. I have missed the snows that make the world dizzy with white and my breath catch with the cool. New events to be hosted at my Hart and it seems more full than ever of excellent and lovely people. I am over the moon at this!

I have also found that there is a growing interest in the Houses of Avrum welcoming Harts of their own n their cities and ports. The idea of each house benefit from the work done here makes me so happy. Perhaps it will not be long before all the best houses will host a Golden Hart of their to help their people on a local level.

So much to speak about. I shall endeavor to speak more specifically soon. But if this is the beginning of the season, I am absolutely excited to see what else may come. I think it might be a winter to remember in all the best ways. (Though I tap upon the table often so as not to jinx this with my delight and praise.)

There is always more work to be done.

That it is meaningful (I hope) makes hard work easier.

Relationship Note on Gabriella

I have been reading the responses to the question posed with considerable interest seeing I have only relatively recently become Count Magnotta and thus 'ruler' of Caer Morien and the lands and peoples around it.

The first answers that came to mind for me were as follows.

Quality - Intregity. If one cannot act with this how can you expect the same from those that follow you?

Flaw - Arrogance. Such a trait can blind you to other flaws as well and begin a downward spiral into the worse of tyrants.

I may be wrong with these, after all, being a ruler is different from being a military leader but I believe there may be some parallels.

I have decided that it is perhaps time for me to revive my Metallic cycle into a new series of concerts for those who missed attending the first time, and so that I may also be able to answer more and better questions about what we know about these heroes of the past.

Perhaps, in addition, I will add an evening for discussion of those Metallics who worked with the most heroic of them but did not end up meriting their own song. We know of several additional names that aided the most notable heroes, and it may be interesting to speak on them.

With the right motivation, I could perhaps sponsor other such presentations on folklore and old songs. The Bard's College Performance Hall is an ideal place for such things, in my opinion.

While I nominally went along to the recent 'reaving' in the near Saffron Chain as an observer for the most part I found that both myself and the Tempest were pressed into roles in combat.

The crew performed admirably in the situations faced and the Tempest itselt suffered only minor damage as result of an enemy boarding action. I will be looking st measures to mitigate such future occurrences.

With the city blanketed by snow, I'm happy to say I've found refuge in a beautiful winter coat made by Nina Autumndale. It's always hard to get used to when you've grown used to the feeling kissing your skin this Arxian weather where my childhood fashions will instead make you feel assaulted by a million tiny daggers, even so I'll endevour to persevere another season!

In other news the Brass Dragon's Office in the new ward has been finished and it's absolutely lovely. I look forward to holding many a meeting in its comforts.

I can actually see the walls of Arx when we woke up this morning. The snow had stopped enough that vision had returned. Marla has never looked so relieved, and I cannot say that I blame her in the least The idea of a warm bath after so many weeks on the road is something I'm holding dear to my heart. It's doing more to keep my blood warm than my cloak, I think!

I'm not looking forward to reporting we were unable to find the Halls of Pentarus, either. There's a high probability that they don't, and never did, exist.

I did not make it back to Arx before the first winter snows. We were camped just a few days' ride from the walls when the first of the flakes began to fall through the branches of the trees. It really only adds to the creepiness of the woods at night, with so many of the branches bare and skeletal by now, illuminated only by the firelight. To see the first bits of white drift down upon you is enough, in a flight of fancy, to make you think the woods may be about to catch aflame. Or already had and what you're seeing is just ash.

Certainly it made Marla jump and squeak when the wood on the fire popped. As a Maid she is superb. As a travel companion outside of a city setting? I'm not convinced she's going to work out. It won't take us long to reach Arx and then she'll feel more at home.

I will miss some of that old-growth forest near the lake. Sometimes you need to clear-cut and burn some trees to preserve the forest. It is rare that metaphor is made so physically true, but that is what the winter is there to tell us.

Autumn left far too swiftly and now I'm contending with snowflakes. Though, the joy of watching a foal come across snow for the first time is an adorable delight.

Beware of the rhetoric of tyrants: those who seek to go to war for personal reasons always find a way to substitute dehumanizing abstractions for human beings.

Beware of the rhetoric of warlords: those who defend war as the only way to settle differences have devised pleasant sounding abstractions to describe the process of mass murder.

But heed the words of the wise general who has spent her life defending their nation: the first casualty of war is the truth, for victory often requires the obfuscation of the horrors necessary to seize it.

Winter is cold. But there is much beauty and joy to be found in the winter, even so.

I do still prefer the warmer months, but I have somewhat adjusted to the colder weather. It is particularly nice to sit in the baths, and watch the snow -- of course, that must be within outdoor springs, and there are not too many of those.

But some.

There's nothing like splitting a hot muffin and letting the butter melt inside it, until everything gets gooey and soft and delicious.

Especially when it's blueberry and a cold snowy morning.

Simple pleasures.

Relationship Note on Raymesin

He does not like the cold.
At all.
Arms folded in he stalks
All edges
Brittle cuts with words
And eyes
Until he is warm again.

Heat and sleep combat
What's frozen.
He parts between bodies
Curls in
And he slowly softens
Grumbling low
At his lovers entangling him:

"I. Hate. Winter."

I fear that the race did not go as I had hoped. Bessie did her utmost, but Baroness Gilden's Goldie was by far more fleet of foot, and hoofed it to the finish line far, far before any of the others. As was pointed outbid the Lady Medeia, Bessie ran better at Ashford and perhaps the city doesn't agree with her, so I ought push for similar venues in the future. Time will tell. I have at least a statuette for Bessie's troubles from the Queen.

In the meantime, the Princess Valencia has been kind enough to offer me the choice of any of her trees to climb in my shame, thus to make good on my promise to Gerrick to do such if Bessie was not crowned champion.
