I love my patron, Zoey Kennex. She is so wise. She has shown me that I should look deeper into things I learn. Have you ever been told a story and then dismiss it from your mind as it does not pertain to you? You thought! Surprise! It /does/ pertain to you!

I think I found something better than Mum's biscuits or the Marquessa's lemon cookies.

Shareen's pickles.

She said they were from the first batch of cucumbers, and the first jar.

Jayus be praised in food form. There's just so much garlic in it and then, the dill, the fronds all waving around like kelp in a salty sea. There's peppers in there too, with a touch of spice to them and salt so that when I just grab a fistful - Mum'd slap the back of my head if she saw me eat this jar - and bite down, they'd burn in a way that makes my belly pleasant.

Toad turned his nose up at em. More for me. I managed to get another bottle to bring back home.

I like it here. The darkness isn't here. I can't feel a lick of sadness.

A few interesting things in the banns this week.

A marriage between the Malespero and Darkwater was announced with Marquessa Lianne wedding the newly made lord Apollo. I look forward to seeing what both of them will do, they’re rather active in trying to make things better.

House Sanna announced that lady Sapphira is now appointed their minister of loyalty. As she’s known for her persuasiveness and creative skills in music, she might be able to convince and persuade the best out of their peoples instead of the threat of violence. I wish her and her house well.

Overall, very good and positive things from both of the above items.

Out of the banns…….

I was pleased to assist the Eswynds and their reavers hunting down Ivanite ships seeking to turn the blockade of their embattled settlements in the Lang Drager. The Vaevici ship, the Gorgon, and the Sangrinite Myrmidons who went with me performed excellently. With a dozen Eswynd longships, four other crafts and our own spread out across several miles. On the sixth day past noon, the prey that was slipping through the mists was found. Eight ships in a convoy with a large cog being protected. While the Eswynd main reaving fleet dealt with the escort ships, the Gorgon managed to jam the cog’s rudder while we boarded. Quite a long and hard fought battle resulted on the decks across the large ship, but eventually the ship was taken. The three nobles who were onboard the ship killed themselves to avoid questioning it seems, which is a shame. It was in that fight an archer managed to hit me in my face with an arrow that nearly took me out. On the return back to Arx, I was under the care of lady Medeia who conducted a series of intense surgeries to remove the arrowhead from my face and repair it without issues of bad blood or sickness. I owe her much, and I won’t forget that hard work she did.

I also recently came back from Sangris, after meeting with the S’Ki and then exploring a section of deep jungle and a pyramid that was there. While traps and death waited patiently throughout the corridors deep underground, we were able to reach a main chamber where a great fight took place so long ago. The large ancient metallic serpent that was found was killed, and I took back the head. I’ll be interested in studying this to see what stories or lessons can be learned from such a marvelous and amazing creature. I've never seen such a thing before.

I appreciate when a group of people, who wouldn't normally gather, find themselves in conversation that benefits them all. Truly, that is my greatest joy in having little get-togethers in this city. Seeing the exchange of ideas and information, the spark of beginning relationships, the potential. So much potential.

Even more satisfying? Finding others who are as excited about and inspired by the things that excite and inspire me. There are projects to do!

The past few weeks have been full of questions. No, that's not quite the correct way of putting it - fraught with questions. Far be it from me to shy from questions; they're a primary tool of my vocation, and beside that, a tool one ought to use often along the path of life, I think. This is, doubtless, a familiar Southern refrain for many of you, but to look at a situation from another angle, to question the veracity of an opinion or a thought, is a core tenet of what I have found strengthens me. Likewise, however, there is tremendous value in knowing when to let questions lie and allow a situation to reveal what it may of itself. Much to be learned by what is revealed or hidden there, too. And I always try to keep in mind that one cannot see /all/ of anything. Least of all a person. I think often of how difficult it is to truly know even ourselves - and then, try to imagine truly knowing another being. There's joy in that, though there is also pain and sorrow. But how dull it would be, were we not always discovering new sides of ourselves - and others - throughout our lives.

So often, conflict comes down to questions of morality. Values. Particularly in much of what I have been engaged in recently, with the growth and expansion of the Compact, the heightened state that loss and anger leave us in makes it difficult to bridge gaps that might not otherwise seem so insurmountable. In large part, however, that's precisely a Whisper's job; or at least, I've thought so, and I've tried my best. I will continue to try my best.

I've been meditating a great deal on the concept of loyalty these past days, as well. What does it mean, to be loyal? There is a difference, I think, between loyalty and obedience. Limerance is, after all, not a blind god; we enter into our oaths with eyes open, and thus we should navigate them. I contend that the greatest loyalty is one which is not afraid to know when to question, to know when to forge ahead, or when to tug the hand it holds and say 'stay, wait a while, let us think on this.' It's not a thing which travels behind, eyes always fixed at the footsteps of the one ahead - true loyalty walks by our sides, ready to face what challenges the thorny path presents with open eyes and open heart.

These are only my own thoughts, however, and I am no scholar nor theologian. That I have spent most of my life in Setarco will, I hope, be some explanation to any who may find such thoughts subversive. Still: I find it worthy of note that while our Pantheon has gods of Honor, Fidelity, and Order, it does not have a god of obedience.

New goals for the future with battles behind us, new arrangements, new relationships. I dislike this ongoing lag between missives from my homeland, the longer we have been here the more expectant we have become. It is not abnormal to wait so long but I tire of it. Would that there was a way to know instantly what happens so far away, but alas; there is not. Establishing a more consistent, swifter form of communication is an old goal bolstered by new allies; I am thankful for Natalia Whisper and her efforts to work with myself and others on it.

No one is so rich as to turn down an ally, and Natalia Whisper is a force to reckon with. Even the king seems to respect her wisdom enough to listen to her, and there's nothing unremarkable about that. Then again, who wouldn't listen to her calm, lovely voice?

I have heard more of Eurusi defectors from the battle, that they scatter over the islands to the east and some arrive here in the city. Reaching out to these refugees has been a constant task and ever-rewarding; coming to strange shores is still fresh in my mind. The cooler climes, the snow, the people; for all the differences in culture and lifestyle, I cannot say I regret my choices. The hope and relief in the voices I hear speaking in my tongue only affirm that.

I am hopeful too, for the future to come; we have more obstacles to face but I am not alone.

Alright, Kenjay. We have work to do, my love.

Adept as we are at the raid, the swift blow that falls and carries off what's needed or wanted before any blow can be mustered and given back, there is something so bloody satisfying about a real fight. Feeling the clash, seeing blood and sweat spot the deck like rain, and knowing the strongest and fiercest will prevail. Matching strength against weakness is well and good- it's how my people have survived these many centuries, but every now and again, a warrior feels the need to try strength against strength and break a foeman's will with the sight of his most trusted defense failing him.

I made a nice little bed and bench combination for Lady Clarisse this week, I didn't recognize her at first but then I remembered we met at the Traders Tavern once before. The furnature was a nice dark walnut stained to look similar to bark with green vines, she gave me a tip too, such a nice lady.

I have spent the week in the forest Training the dog to move quietly and to help me with melee fighting as a team. I have also been practicing my archery, which is woefully neglected. As well, I am also training the raven to carry messages around conflicts rather than over them to reduce the chance of him catching an arrow. My own wilderness skills are improving and I have tried to gain a spot in the Explorers, an effort I expect to pay off in the very near future. Hopefully this will allow me to personally witness some of the things I only hear stories about and add to my histories as well as be of some practical use to those who are taking the risks with all the scouting.

I have taught Stalwart to rear and to lash out with his front hooves. Amazing how hard it can be to stay seated during all that while in full armor, even though i do not even have the full-sized sword yet. Felix was working on it, though, and I know he is busy now what with becoming an Archlector and all. We will see if it still arrjves, but at least I have a new weapon in the mix.

(A note by A. Brobdingnagian Byrd, Byrdie.)

Duke Malcolm and Oskar Grimkiln drank too much to function. There was a conversation about neo-nobles, shav'arvani and Prodigals, a desire to ennoble the already noble line of Boofus the Bold, and missing livestock in Graypeak lands. The latter is the point that the Duke continued to talk about until the writing of this when I finally had enough!
