A steadfast friend who worries about me as well as a capable leader. It is so good to get to spend a little time with her.

Cedar Vale lost its Count and its protector this week. You were a sturdy young man lifted quickly to your position. It wasn't through folly that you fell, you served your position well.

You will be missed.

In the market for: One husband.

Now, I know what you're thinking:

"But, Avita, O sweet image of loveliness," You're saying to yourself, "To the grand heartbreak of all, you already have a husband!"

But it is here that I must correct you. You see, our dear Ciaphas, once Marquis-Consort of the most appropriately beautific March of Ischia, has spilled Setarco wine. This, in itself, might have been enough to condemn him to a terrible fate. But, that was not the end of his vicious tirade of truculence ... not by far.

He spilled this nectar of the gods, this precious, ambrosial lifeblood of the very finest the Compact has to offer, upon my new dress.

My new ... starlight silk ... dress. This offense, as unforgivable as it is, transpired before I could bestow upon all the glorious view of my sinuous form draped in this exquisite finery, and for this ... I apologise.

I only hope we might all one day recover from this unparalleled tragedy.

As you might expect, he is dead now.

I know who has your slippers, and they may once again be yours for a modest ransom. No coin will change hands, perhaps only a pithy word or two. Do send word if you'd like them back, and I'll wrangle the despised slipper-thief into returning them for well below market price.

I'm not the sort for clothes that don't serve a purpose - those that know me will find that of little surprise - but even I, on rare occasion, find cause to dress up, as the situation dictates. It's uncomfortable, vulnerable, and I rather mislike it on most occasions, but I had the occasion to try on some Rose Leather recently, and I can certainly understand the appeal. I don't think it'd stop a punch, but when it comes to the aesthetic and the plush quality, I can see why everyone is abuzz about it.

No, I didn't purchase any - much to the shopkeeper's annoyance, I'm sure - but I had to see what the fuss was about, and found it quite to my liking. Feels less foreign to a woman like me who all but lives in her leathers, showing up in finery made of leather than in a wispy dress. With my shoulders all stocky, it feels more flattering, as well.

Relationship Note on Medeia

It's a very lovely garden that Lady Medeia tends and I was glad for the invitation to visit it. I enjoyed the little tour and our conversation together. I imagine the view of the bay from the back wall is wonderful too and one day hope to experience it. I promise I'll stay out of the nettles.

So, I was wondering what's all this buzz about rose leather is. Checked it out and was pleasantly surprised. Found it rather neat, even. Comes with some wonderfully neat price tags too, as one might expect. But, mark my words, you /will/ see Ariella Igniseri in rose leather attire and it /will/ blow your mind. You've been warned.

I bought a new dress-- yes, a dress! and slippers for the Masquerade the other night, and promptly lost the slippers. I heard a New Moon had wandered off with them?

I'm sure my regular boots will look fine with the dress, next time I have occasion to wear it.

Much discussion of fashion this week. I suspect it will surprise none to discover where I fall in this debate, though perhaps I am counting my chickens prematurely. The remarks upon the idea that clothing needs to serve another purpose aside from adornment amuse me; perhaps being that one of the new materials is leather, and we are used to seeing leather used for highly practical garments, we forget that adornment in itself is a purpose. For as long as we have known recorded history, we know that art has existed. And fashion is a form of art; decorating oneself is a tradition as old as history itself. Older, probably. Is it a matter of necessity? Perhaps not, in the sense that we think of shelter, food, drink. But what would the world be without beauty? How much less enriched would we find ourselves without sensory pleasure to delight, and mental stimulation to keep our minds active? Art is as much a baseline of culture as anything else. Something need not be practical in order to be valuable.

Likewise, some discussion of tastefulness has crossed my path. This is a difficult intersection at which to find oneself; the peerage are blessed in many ways, by blood, by wealth, by education, which often predispose them with the ability to create taste and trends. But my personal belief is that, regardless of predisposition of situation, there is an ineffable quality of courage, intuition, and confidence which truly creates a trendsetter. Certain people of any station could look fetching in a potato sack, and we ought to cultivate that sort of carefree self-belief, when it comes to fashion. As much as I advocate for artists and artisans, being one myself, I don't believe that we are the last word when it comes to our own creations. Often it's the interpretation of those creations when they're out of our hands which brings them to new heights. Particularly if our creations are tailor-made /for/ another person, as garments often are, why not delight in those new interpretations?

Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely, however. I have little experience with luxury goods, and I am perfectly accepting of that. I admire the ingenuity and creativity of the creators of such goods from afar; for me, it's the craftsmanship and quality of a garment which matters, perhaps a stubborn remnant of my youth. I'm nonetheless deeply impressed by what Radiant Anisha, Lady Mabelle, and those who assisted them have managed to create. To make something new is a worthy undertaking indeed. Jayus is no doubt pleased.

I know I saw some of you at the Masquerade recently. I don't think anyone recognized me, in particular - but that's as designed. If you suspect you danced with me and would like to confirm or deny, do feel free to send a missive. I don't bite unless requested. It was an interesting evening; always fascinating to see how people behave when their identities are obscured.

House Igniseri has some exciting things happening over the next month. After going back and forth for ages about it, we've decided to finally start delving into our House history. There are rumors of a set of ruins somewhere near Granato I didn't know about before, and we're about to go and explore those. While I am not an explorer, per say, I am quite interested in what we'll end up finding!!

Then, of course, there are the less exciting things. It seems some bandits are roaming across our countryside. I plan on assembling a team to go and find out what that's all about. I fear I may be tapping on too many shoulders lately, and hedge at asking the same people to help over and over again. It's something I'll be contemplating for a small while, but not so long as to allow this to become a bigger problem, as I try to figure out who to ask for aid.

And so I'm back ashore! Although my sea legs are plenty streched, it's been quite some time since I've given the land ones a run for their money. So, I did just that. Ran along the docks like a lunatic. Thankfully, we arrived pretty late, there weren't too many people around, but I've probably spooked a dock worker or two (if you're reading this, I'm not sorry and I WILL do it again). In the end, getting used to land quicker didn't matter whatsoever; spent the rest of the evening at the tavern, getting absolutely shitfaced, and couldn't walk straight anyway. At least the crew's fed and, relatively, happy.

The air is cooling and I'm so excited! And with the weather, some new leather came out. That doesn't, I don't know. It smells nice and doesn't protect you. At all. I don't understand the point of it. Why do you wear leather if it's not to protect your body? I.Don't.Get.It!

I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of the project that brought rose leather to the market. Radiant Anisha had a vision, and she expertly guided the rest of us toward the realization of it. Every person played a vital role in ensuring the success we experienced. Svana, Nijah, Aconite, Galatea, Lady Mabelle and Marquis Apollo, others in the Apothecary College and Crafter’s Guild. And surely there are those I am missing. But I was lucky to have learned from and been inspired by them all.

And I would be remiss not to mention Messere Audgrim. I had assured him I was in no hurry, but when he mentioned a new design? I had to take the chance. A new design in a new material is not to be passed up. And while he can see the imperfections in his work, I can see the beauty. Dare I say it? It makes me feel like a princess must feel, sometimes.
