It has since been translated. The inscription reads, "Justice tempers power".
The man who assisted me in its final translation is a bit of a foreigner and recent arrival himself. He asked me what the inscription means and without my usual rumination provided him an answer which I hope satisfied his immediate query.
Clearly the sword itself, as any weapon might, conveys a certain amount of power to the wielder. This is especially true if the one holding the sword is surrounded by others who are not also holding swords. The message itself seems to remind the bearer of the sword that their absolute freedom and ability to use it upon another must be counterbalanced by fairness and reason. Here we have an example, perhaps, of Justice within.
Perhaps another holding the sword is deficient, intellectually or otherwise (perhaps only by education) in what is fair and what is reason. This one, not necessarily a dullard but perhaps less thoughtful than the first, may find their absolute freedom and ability to use the sword counterbalanced by knowing its misuse would be answered with swords brought back upon themself. Here would be Justice without.
And perhaps yet another holding the sword is not deficient intellectually or otherwise. Perhaps this one simply has a lust for the absolute freedom and ability to wield the sword. Or this one wishes to be feared or revered and the sword offers a path to achieving these. This one has no Justice within, and no fear or respect or thought for Justice without. Their absolute freedom and ability to use the sword is counterbalanced by the swords of the many in retaliation. This is also a form of Justice, one we all find familiar, and which we often simply call 'Justice'.
Of the three, it is the last we often call upon to receive Sentinel's Justice. But it was the first righteous two who were, and are, the true beneficiaries of it.
This is by no means a full and complete summation of all the possible implications of this "Justice tempers power". I'm sure you can think of several points in your own life, or that you have observed, where power was or was not tempered by Justice.

I haven't had the chance to travel much, of late. Not since Bastion. A rather bleak and terrifying punctuation mark on my travels thus far, to be sure, but hopefully it's a comma or a semi-colon rather than a period.
I've got a boulder that I've claimed for myself on the outskirts, where the waters of the bay lap against the rough sand beaches. I write this entry from atop of it, under the light of the stars and moon. I wait for no one in particular. Being alone with my thoughts is well enough. The clamor of the city can be difficult to escape. It can all feel so... close.
Wide open skies. An endless horizon.
It's a good vantage, my little boulder is.

Of course, the guests were surprised as well, owing to whatever was put in the drinks. I'm rather glad I noticed something was off before I went off and had one, myself. It wouldn't have done, I don't think, for me to have come home and complained that I couldn't read Livia and Zelde their bedtime story because the words were disagreeably marching off the page.
I DO wish Zelde would stop choosing that rainbow princess book to read every time it's her turn to choose. I may have to see that it's accidentally lost somewhere.
