Cannot fucking believe I still find spiders in the basement when we have the most aggressive cat humankind has ever been cursed with.

Do your damn job, feline.

I have made calls for unity in my journals and in public forums that have been shouted down in the past. Yet, the Compact is an example of the hope and strength unity provides. I have had people tell me that my calls are misguided, that what I advocate for is against the ideal of choice and freedom. It is horrible to have people I respect tell me that I am imploring my peers to accept slavery when what I am doing is imploring my peers to remember why the Compact was formed.

We make trade deals, marriage alliances, oaths to support the union of six great houses under the Crown. Unity does not ask for blind obedience. It does not strip away your name, your customs, your individuality. It is a state of being in which one accepts another as an ally regardless of their differences. Our united efforts won us the battle at Pieros. Similarly, we have come together to see to the care and keeping of Bastion's refugees. Many voiced the sentiment that an attack on Bastion was an attack on all of us.

That is unity. It must be a blessed thing because Gild compels us to give succor to those who need it and Limerance holds us to our oaths of fealty and marriage. I know that I have made my share of divisive comments, but at every step I seek the survival - no, the flourishing - of the Compact.

De-Nobling is a funny thing.
One would think,
were one noble by birth,
a gift given by the Gods themselves,
no matter what some mortal says,
one's nobility may not be taken away.

But, there I go, thinking again.

I always enjoy learning new things in life. And combat is one I have the least amount of experience in. So its great to have my near-brother take the time to train me. He's a great teacher, and even though our personalities are quite different, when it comes to training, Eswynds understand in ways i'm sure outsiders would think quite drastic but we are revers after all

Mutualism. If anyone comes across a half-eaten wasp in their fig - don't waste it. I'm sure it's as good for you as the fruit is.

The Most Holy wrote most eloquently on this, and I find myself in total agreement with them. Velenosa acts within tradition, how could I - as someone bound in the ways of the Orthodoxy - do anything but admire that? Even as I perhaps regret that such behaviour could ever be thought acceptable in any circles.

I do find it baffling some of the terms thrown around and the fury that surrounds these decisions. If you think someone has broken an oath? You have Seraphs. Speak to them. Or one of the archlectors. Or a legate. It is odd that people think if a High Lord were acting against the ideals of the Gods the Faith would be silent, and the Most Holy would even offer support. The Faith has always laid out the expectations of the ideals of the Gods. Even when that is unpopular. Even when it means we must speak the truth to people of political power, even to High Lords and Kings. We are honest friends, true advisors - but representatives of the Gods on Arvum first and foremost.

Of course, the politics of things? That I would not know about.

There is power in ghosts -- in the memories that cling to this world like drops of dew to grass.

Sometimes, I take Donato through the gardens, beneath the weeping wisteria, and I tell him about his mother and father -- about my memories of them -- and those memories shine like a silver light around us. I like to think he can see the outline of them, in that light. That he can almost reach out and touch them. But ghosts, like legacies, are always just out of reach. We are always chasing them.

My dear Donato, you hold your parents' light like a beacon, a path through any darkness -- or into it. I will be there, whichever path you choose.

The opposite of unity is strife, not freedom. If you're going to be contrary, do it right.

You people commit a lot more damn crimes with ink and quill than I ever saw a highwayman pull with a straight blade.

Did you know there are certain types of birds that lay their eggs in the nest of another type of bird? Not only that, the interloper bird then pushes out the chicks of the host bird, to reduce competition for itself. All the while the host cares for the outsider as one of its own. Isn't nature interesting?

So, I've been organizing the bookshelves to prepare for having them moved downstairs. Palamon has been sitting on top to supervise. However, more and more often he flies over to the window and taps on it, impatient to go on a hunt. His senses have been overturned by the moon being so visible the past few weeks. I told him wouldn't be great if it stays this way so we could hunt any time we liked, day or night? He gave me a look of such incredible contempt, like he can't believe he allows the presence of one so stupid around him. Of course, I had to follow that up by saying he can't enjoy the simple joys in life. He tucked his head into his wing and refused to even look at me the rest of the day, probably wishing death upon me. He didn't even ruffle his feathers when I reminded him how I will die.

While we do most often hunt at night, we do sometimes during the day, but he gives me this look like he thinks that I believe he is a lesser avian and have offended him deeply for treating him as one of them. He can't be honest and admit he likes hunting regardless of when we do. Still, I wonder at his increased surliness. Hinting at replacing him with a falcon won't help. Probably. Maybe dressing him up like Clover does Vim...

I know the lord is busy talking tough and screaming at seagulls but do not forget: the lord has been cordially invited to make his mark not with limited wit, but with those large, burly, Lycene-crushing arms of his and back up his claims with some honor.

Methinks that maybe lords who are more skilled with a pen shouldn't mouth off to any who write with the ink of blood.

I will preface this by saying I am not privy to anymore information on this matter than anyone else. However, I am deeply concerned by the actions being taken by Archduchess-Regent Jaenelle Velenosa. She has made it clear what an impressive effort she has made in this role. No one denies that she has been an effective, even superb, leader in her time as regent. Her foresight has ensured that the Lyceum is stronger and safer. I am as grateful for the support she has shown to her vassals and theirs as one could be! She has performed her duty admirably.

Her duty as regent. The appointment of a regent is to lead in the stead of the named heir and guide that heir until they reach majority. That the archduchess-regent has been an exemplar is not in dispute, her demand to drop the "regent" from her title is. The Compact is built on the promises we make to one another, it is a promise, and it is weakened when we do not honor it. Being appointed regent shows a great amount of trust in the individual to care for the child heir and the lands and people they will inherit the rule of. And trust to release the hold on their power when the time comes. The role of a regent is meant to be temporary.

I say this knowing it is unlikely to win me any friends. In fact, I fully expect for this publicly available opinion to cause difficulty for me in the coming days. My hope is that any who wish to show their disagreement with me do so directly.

It has crossed my mind recently that I do not think I've told those close to me how thankful I am to have them in my life. I will certainly have to do this in person but would like to have these words documented.

First of all there is Dominique. I do not know many older sisters who are fearless and compassionate. To say Dominique goes into her projects passionately is an understatement. I always looked up to her when we were growing up and knew then as I know now that Wyrmguard is in capable hands. I still look up to her and always will.

My brother Damon, you are missed but I am thankful for the time we had together growing up in Blancibier. It was you who inspired my love of literature and often times when you didn't wish to be pestered by your little sister, I would hide away while you read aloud to your imaginary friends. I cherish the times you would read to me and I think of you when I tell grand tales to Dominique's children.

My cousin Sorrel, I thank you for your friendship, for always being a voice of reason and never thinking any question I have is too silly.

There are so many others still, my cousins Drake, Richard, and Kiera.... the list goes on and on.

( In wine, truth. In narcotics, the blunt. )

We will be the destructive force of one another, of our - everything - I suppose, if we continue to pull at each lost and unraveling thread, creating chasm after chasm, isolating ourselves, burning bridges while still being asked into the crossing of them - and we're turning ourselves into the things that we are afraid to mention out loud.

Standing on top of the mountain, you see everything. It is not just the vantage point, but the journey that got you there. The twists and turns. The loose footing. The pain. The anguish. The joy. The victory. The freedom of the wind in your hair. It changes you. There is perspective, but it is not without flaw. While you see the world around you, the little details fade out of view.

If you don't stand your ground, you will fall. We all stumble, but when you jump, best to check there is ground to land on. Or, just enjoy the ride.

Relationship Note on Valencia

I came to Arx during a rough time for House Thrax. I didn't understand it. I didn't know about the bridges that had been burnt. All I knew was that people left the room when I came in, and other people told me straight to my face that they wouldn't interact with me at all because I was an Islesman and they didn't socialize with my ilk. I was pretty lost at the time, and stood to lose myself more, the way things were going.

Valencia Velenosa not only reached out to me in a way that no one else did, she used her social pull to insist that people interact with me, and when I'd mess up, which anyone who knows me knows that I do, she'd smooth things over. She grabbed Arx by the shirt and all but ordered it to give me a chance, and her doing that probably saved me from sinking to become someone who I'd be ashamed to meet, now.

I don't know what's been going on over in the Lyceum ward, I doubt I'd understand if I did, and honestly, I don't care. Valencia was a friend when I needed one, and I know I'm not the only one for whom that's true.

Relationship Note on Cufre

I am ecstatic to hear that Harlequin Cufre Harrow's new shop in the Ward of the Compact has opened! My dear protege is an amazing artist with a gift for making metals and baubles that delight and inspire. She is not one for large gatherings, and I have politely squashed my own wishes to host an extravagant grand opening for her. However, she did not say I could not gush about her in my journals. So, should any who read this find they have need for a jeweler? I encourage you to seek her out at Heart of Stone. It will be well worth your while, I assure you.
