Legate Cassandra suggested to me in a recent letter that the Faith ought to publicly set forth a lecture series or some writings, some liturgical reminders of the duty one owes one's sworn Liege and the head of one's family. At the time, it was my belief that no one could possibly be stupid enough as to believe that what the person who as of the instant writing is known as Valencia Velenosa is doing in public is remotely appropriate.

As this person continues to blatantly defy and condemn their liege in the bizarre expectation that they are somehow in the right, I must publicly admit that my faith was misguided. Someone, somewhere, does not realize how appalling a breach this is. Cassandra was right.

If by the unfathomable mercy of the Archduchess the person known as Valencia Velenosa retains the noble title which she now publicly degrades, this should never and be any account be taken as license by any to treat their oathsworn family the way this entitled upstart is doing.

The Faith offers our support to the House of Velenosa in this trying time of being beset by public foolishness and I offer my personal and public apology to Legate Cassandra Laurent for my earlier position on the matter.

The streets of Arx.

I have been gone for mere months, but it feels like it has been a lifetime.

The roads, the buildings, the people; they all feel like specters that haunt.

Apparitions from a time when life was better.

My mother. My dear sisters. Blossoming lives now enrobed in the aether.

Is that all that Arx holds for my family?

Time shall tell...

It's my birthday. I'm another year older. My son is almost 8 months old. I'm not sure where the last year has gone. In that year, so much has happened. So many losses. I guess there isn't much for me to say, except for how terribly grateful I am. And fortunate.

And my son? Watch your hair folks. Beards, head, all of it! And..he's going to be crawling now soon too. So watch your ankles!

Relationship Note on Cadern

Working WITH my brother was a fun experience. It was like like we were kids again. Kinda. Cadern got lost again, which was definitely like when we were children. I hope my niece has a better sense of direction.

I had the fortune of going sailing with Lord Mattheu Rivenshari. There is a certain joy I take in watching someone engage in a task in which they are well-skilled much the same as when I watch Drake on the champion's field. There's also a certain infectious sense of freedom in being on the water. a lovely time.

Sometimes, when reading the journals available to me, I feel the need to hand out dictionaries to the people of Arx.

You know that word you are using? I do not think it means what you think it means...

Oh, which word? Well... quite a few, I am afraid. For example, sensible, respectful, and practical, for starters.

I went to Maelstrom, scholar. It was a nice little vacation. Princess Denica and Messere Caprice did great jobs hosting the gala. And scholar...I watched Princess Denica and Prince Jasher dance. I didn't know Jasher danced! And Den? She leaped and he CAUGHT HER! I thought for sure she'd fall flat on her face and I've have to patch it back together. Thankfully I didn't.

Sometimes I feel like...I cause more issues than help. Things get a bit messy. I feel like I've caused more problems than anything. But sometimes, sometimes I find out I did something helpful and that means everything.

Relationship Note on Noah

Archduke Consort Noah Velenosa is surely one of a kind. Absolutely no one compares. Not only is he extremely cultured, he has quite a way with words as well. They are much appreciated.

He also likes cookies. It's hard to find fault in anyone who likes cookies.

It's been a quiet couple of weeks for me, Scholar. Well, as quiet as it ever gets. Running the night crews is always interesting, after all, and the more things change, the more they stay the same. The population of the Lowers rose again with the influx from Bastion, and that's always entertaining, but most of the entertainment's gone from that now as things have settled into a new normal, which is a new boring.

I like boring, in Arx. Boring in Arx is good for business.

The next few weeks promise to be interesting elsewhere, which is even better. I can't wait. The Lowers in the heat of summer is never where you want to be, if you still have a nose.

Trouble is acting up. This is the third time he's passed a message off on a random person, and I can only conclude that he's pissed about moving where there aren't any kitchens. Not like the fatty couldn't use a diet.

I need to remember to leave stuff out now. Prissy beggar.

Relationship Note on Jian

I've had an absolutely delightful, conversation, though I found it rather shorter than I would have wished, with Priestess Jian this afternoon that has left me once again craving those wonderful little buns they serve at the tea house filled with that red paste inside. Which I have learned, by the by, is made from beans. Beans! I never would have thought. I never do seem to walk away from a conversation with one of Jadairal's delegation without learning something new. I suppose one must put that down to there being so very much to learn.

I have also learned that their language is called 'Halcyon', but unfortunately, she was called away before I was able to ask about the origin of the word, and so I'm left wondering whether they chose an Arvani word as the Arvani translation for the name of their language in a bid to quite mercifully save us from making fools of ourselves trying to pronounce whatever word is used in their language, or whether the Arvani word comes originally from there and has taken on a different definition over time.

I'm afraid I'm not making much sense. Well! I'm sure I'm not the first person she's left with their head spinning a bit in her wake.

I've always been more eloquent in speech than I am in ink. It is my cousin, Dafne, who is the writer of the family. I suppose I shall have to train myself back to this practice of writing journals to the Archives. Well, then:

This week has been very enlightening. I am surrounded by people much smarter than I, and I can only hope to continue to learn from them but still be of aid.

My wife just called me a bastard, Scholar.

I know it! And so does she! She's known for decades, it's not like it's news to either one of us.

I suspect it has something to do with the Duplicitous Tarts by the way she was grumbling, but I'm not sure. It's not like I've been swiping them, after all - I've just been telling people how delicious they are.

They are, by the way, Scholar. Delicious. Yes, definitely try one if you get the chance.

The Duplicitous Tart is nearly ready to sell, but every time I make a batch, half of them go missing. Also, the Ulbrans I wander around seem quite ... cheerful, always winking, bright smiles, compliments on my pa-

The re-release of my books has been met with great success! I am pleased to have found better scribes who work in trade as well as coin. Not that I am cheap, I am happy to pay full price for good work. But if sweetrolls and pie can't hasten the deadline, then what's the point?

I still have many copies. My epilogue has made it to the shelf as well! Just a few. It pleases me a bit that they're hard to come by.

...what? Why are you laughing, scholar?

It is not the large problems that take down empires; it is the many little ones that gnaw at the foundation. Usually, we can see the large problems long before they crash at our walls and our gates. The tiny troubles are what we ignore, until the poison has seeped too deeply to root out. I am praying that we always address the small problems before they kill us from within. There is too much at stake not to, I am coming to learn.
