Relationship Note on Fergus

A sketch in charcoal, it's been carefully finished with great attention paid to the light and shading of the piece, demonstrating a considerable level of skill. To those who have been there, it is immediately recognisable as a sketch of the Great Hall of the Redrain Villa, showing many of the family gathered around the large, bear table there. Darren sits at the head of the table, seeming to be in conversation with several other members of the family. The expressions of many are somewhat grim, the discussion obviously of a somewhat serious nature. Seated slightly to the right of Darren, particularly notable is an enormously built, battle scarred man with a mane of long, wildly unkempt hair. Attention seems to have been given to this figure above all others, the level of detail and surpassing the rest of the drawing by some considerable margin.

Beneath the sketch is written "Last known drawing of Prince Fergus Redrain, in the Great Hall of the Redrain Villa on the day of his death. Discussing military matters with other members of his house."

Did I mention that the very talented Mistress Zalika made my gown and Lord Corban's suit for the Gala? I ought to have done. I can't WAIT to wear the gown. I may never take it off!

Mind, for all the fuss of preparing for these events, I cannot help thinking that this one is well timed. We live in days and weeks of anxiety. Fate hangs heavy over all of us. Some families already have so much to grieve. But if for a few hours we can feel as though there is something to celebrate, it is a worthy cause and then some.

For those wondering what it's like preparing for events like the galas being held, here are some of the little things it entails:

Food! You will likely find you have missed food very much in the days coming up to the event, the better to fit into your clothing properly. Depending on the attire you have chosen, it may be a cruel twist of fate that the tables will be laden with the most scrumptious looking morsels one can imagine. Yet instead the imagination works overtime with visions of split seams or foregoing sitting the rest of the evening.

Pain! You will make friends with pain as your hair is teased and tested in different arrangements to find just the one to go with your clothing and chosen jewels. You will learn to better appreciate easy breathing as you are cinched and corsetted to within an inch of your life. But these things are not without their rewards. There are few pleasures more exquisite than when the ties are loosened at the end of the night and ones body remembers that there is a natural shape to be enjoyed. The well off are fortunate that we can afford excellent tailors, so there is not too much pricking of pins. Herein let me emphasize the importance of Not Being a Dick to those that are making things for you, or fitting you in them. I think that's rather an important lesson whether you're picking up the daily bread or having a throne made.

Hydration! Drink plenty of water, but even tea is a bit of a chance as it may stain ones teeth. Note that between points one and three, the libations at any celebration may be even more intoxicating than the norm. So much like the food, one may find themselves more looking longingly than indulging.

Time: There will never be quite enough. Always plan on an extra hour. Two if you are a pet owner.

Speaking of this, I really must find Norwood. I think he's made off with one of my slippers.

I'm looking forward to another bout of Donkey Knights, the 1008 Public Championship. Little more could be fun than a few drinks, donkeys, blindfolds, a drunken and angry dragon, and ropes. Well, obviously the version that's played at my private parties is more fun, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm told that Sir Ham will be making a return, potentially with a sidekick. Or is it rival? Nemesis? Either way he likely wants to earn the championship trophy this year and be the Donkey Knights Champion for 1008 AR.

Charitable acts can be a great deal of fun and that's why I enjoy Donkey Knights as a vessel for charitable endeavors.

Last night, my dream changed.

I feel as though I must have had a fever. The dream was wild that way. Unmoored. Dreams are never real, of course, but some dreams are more real than others. And some dreams, like this one, are more real than they should be.

It started like the other ones. I went into the hall deep in the earth, with all of the weight of the earth and the sea and the sky pressing down on the air that I breathed, making it thick as syrup, and the man was there, chained to his throne. He offered me a cup as I approached, the cup of all of his sorrow, and I took it, cradling it in both of my hands, feeling the cold marble and the weight of it contents. But it wasn't seawater inside this time. It was a heart. His heart.
I looked up, and I saw that he was crying.

In that moment, I was two people, the girl who took the cup, and the girl who set it aside. I looked at him through two pairs of eyes, and I saw him twice, chained, withering away, dried out from the inside by the tears he cried and rising, beautiful and terrible, capable of so much, with all the world spread out in the palms of his hands. In that moment, seeing him as he was, seeing him as he could be, knowing that I was also seeing who I could be, certainty filled me, and what had seemed like a choice wasn't anymore. It was more like knowing about something that had already happened, set in time, and unalterable. I saw that I had taken -- would take -- took -- the third way.

I gave the chained man my heart in that cup of sorrow.

Someone else beaten but not left for dead this time, no this time they died. I did not know Marquessa Freja well nor her brother Prince Fergus. But I did have the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Princess Marian, I am sorry for your loss both you and your little one. Sitting here thinking about this and I wonder could this be the same person who beat me and left me for dead? I wish I knew, I wish I could look the coward in their face and tell them. But all I can do now is pray, pray for Justice and pray for healing for their families.
