Today's tea is a very gentle mint, which smells wonderfully and is also very warming. Useful in winter time, I find.

Though I confess that after my trip to the Redrain Quadrant to listen to the stories told there, I quite enjoyed a very warming coffee with chocolate, and perhaps a bit of spirits tossed in.

Time does not stand still. Neither do oceans. Or rivers. Eventually, even a mountain will move, and no amount of protest about how the mountain has always been there will keep it from burying you. I suppose one could argue that change is the oldest tradition of all.

Once a season, try to see yourself through someone else's eyes. It is quite enlightening. For better or worse.

some days, i bemoan my lack of wit and lyrical skill. Winter has found us.. and the snow and cold hug us close. but oh, winter brings such charming delight though! snuggles and warm fires! hot drinks and close company! if only, if ONLY i had a wit and a mind like Lord Savio.. i could write a poem about snow that would make our hearts sing.. alas...

Stepping foot on the docks in what can't have been longer than a few years, everything feels different. The atmosphere of a city can change as surely as a forest on fire, and here there is nothing but smoke. Outwardly nothing seems different; the fishmongers make their cries, wares offered at a screech or a call, hagglers and their arguments about what is better: fresh caught or days on ice. The smell of the sea is fetid here, stale as only a dock can be. I'll never grow tired of it.

The labors of living come to us all differently, the efforts of those higher born and those lower are painted from different palettes, with rungs for both to change their circumstance for the better. A bevy of traditions that have served us for centuries into memory, from criminal to High Lord. So many have thrived on benefits for as long as our cultures have gone on breathing despite the squalling complaints of lazy nobles that squat in the shadows of their betters. As if change makes everything better. As if it doesn't rake against what has stood the test of time, doesn't upset the lives of innocents, or outright rob them for the moral comforts of so few.

Hello, Arx. You smell as deliciously complicated and hypocritical as ever. I look forward to our discourse.

First they were Ivanites,
But Ivan lost a battle in his own house and died in hiding.

Then they were Dagonites,
But Dagon opened his mouth once to break faith, and not again until he swallowed an arrow.

Small wonder he hid for so long.

Dredcall burns, Grimkin falls, and the rebels have lost the thin scrap of justification they'd used in swearing to Dagon the Doomed.

Their cause is a sinking ship, in which one captain after another leaps overboard, leaving someone further down the chain in charge.

Had they the wits the Goddess gave a common cod, they'd accept defeat and stop making us raze them into oblivion, but who am I to tell others what choices to make?

We danced, sang, and played music while getting drunk on stories, fed our bodies and minds. Only two were too young to understand that which we were celebrating and mourning at the same time. As is our way within Rivenshari.

I am only upset that they didn't stick around in order to be taught better.

I do not relish attacking one of my own vassals, but there was a lesson that had to be taught. An example to be made.

This war may not be over yet, but important steps toward it have been taken. Maybe now that people have seen the price of treason firsthand, they will think twice about committing it for the sake of a dead tradition.

If not, then more crosses can be built.

It's odd I never took a close look at the Shepherd signet. Not really. Found myself brooding by myself over a drink and gave it a good study. Now I'm left to wonder if I really have business wearing it. A halo of blue and 'none more true'. True? What does that even mean? There is one I might ask but I believe I have forfeited the privilege so I will sit, drink, and contemplate.

CONSIDER THE CABBAGE

Attention is owed a particular vegetable
Dependable, durable, and so delectable
Our humble crop of abundant advantages
Long overdue is the praise of the cabbages:

    Cabbages, cabbages, here they are
Fields of cabbages near and far
    Cabbages large and cabbages small
Cabbages ready for one and all

Wise planners consider the cabbage a favorite
Pay no mind to the harvest-time fragrance
And perhaps a bit notable in the digestion
But the value of cabbage is never in question

Cabbages, cabbages, for young and old
Easy to plant, resistant to cold
    Cabbages here and cabbages there
    Cabbages flourishing everywhere

The cabbage is splendid in soup or in stew
Healthy and hearty and warming all through
But also imagine in dumplings, or fried
So many flavors of cabbage to try!

    Cabbages, cabbages, for every station
A wintertime feast across the whole nation
    Cabbages east and cabbages west
    Cabbages truly are the best

Maybe cabbages lack in a certain panache
But as produce goes, they are unsurpassed
For those who wish to rise better than average:
When time comes to plant, consider the cabbage.

I hate winter. I say it every year, but that doesn't make it any less true. Can't go outside without a cloak, can't stay outside for any length of time, and when I do go outside it takes longer to get anywhere. And Tanith's feet when she gets into bed, ye gods, how she manages to walk on those lumps of ice I have no idea. Yes, I know she's going to make me pay for saying that, but I needed to share the misery.

I have been a foreigner in the cold waters of a war far from home. It is not for me to speak of this -- that voice belongs to those who have suffered most, whose homes and lives have been changed forever by the kinslaying.

What I will say is that I am grateful I have a home to return to, and that I have returned to it unharmed. I kissed my husband and gathered my children into my arms, and I am alive, and this is enough for me.

An old friend was brought to mind at the Baroness Lucita's recent song and storytelling event. It has been some time since my mind has traveled to those days. So many, many memories both good and bad.

It was good to hear the name Sparte Grayfellow spoken again. Strangely, he had been on mind earlier this week. I do not know what exactly brought him to mind, though there are those from the past who are not far from the surface of my thoughts.

Perhaps the weather and the unexpected thought of stoats and their winter coats as I was admiring the new sculptures of snow hidden here and there in the woodland gardens. But I digress.

It was a bittersweet to remember him so. That kind-hearted man who tried to help so many without need for glory or praise. Our Commander of the Iron Calvary, storykeeper, kind-hearted warrior, friend, and so much more. He was among the best of us, I think. Still is.

I miss his presence and how he affected the world around him.

I simply cannot sing the praises of cabbage enough. If I were Lord Savio, I'd write a poem about them. I'm not. I'll spare anyone who happens to read this, what would be some truly horrible prose best forgotten. Out of a great amount of care and compassion for you, fair reader, I will be merciful and refrain. Besides, I'm working on an epic once-in-a-generation song about split pea soup, another of Petrichor's blessings which I enjoy almost daily here in Reveillon. Everyone does. The peas were as plentiful as the cabbage this year.

Praise the gods.

Dagon is dead.

I was on a ship too far off to see it happen myself, but I know that it is done. I had hoped that this would ease some of the ache I still feel whenever I think of the late duchess and how dear she was to me. Sadly, this does not soothe my heart.

Perhaps I am too weary after so much devastation to feel much passion for the continued war. Do not mistake that statement for anything akin to weakness or flagging support of the high lord. No. Still? I want it to end.

On Stewardship: One can not learn everything, be good at everything. One must accept their limitations and learn to work around them. Stewardship helps do that. One discovers who to go to when assistance is needed or who can provide necessary things that one can not do themselves. Stewardship builds relationships with craftsmen, merchants, scholars, faith, and military support to help strengthen a holding.
