Relationship Note on Wagner

Burly and with cathedral-bells for fists, Wagner has spent much of the past thirty years sharpening his boxing skills on the grindstone that is his fellow Arvani. Fiery in spirit, he's always willing to take up fisticuffs. It is a miracle he hasn't used me as his next object of obsession to batter with his hands, but I'm sure he has considered it, on account that I've given him shit from time to time. Maybe I shouldn't. Body found floating by the docks...

I'm kidding. We'll finish that bottle sometime, aye, we will.

Today I had meeting with my patron, Legendary Showman, Venturo Thayne. What transpired was unexpected, though really it should not have been. I am to assist with the seeking out of performance artistes for the next carnival!

Where in Arx does a person go to find acrobats, eaters of fire, contortionists and those with such skills as would bring joy to the carnival crowds? I should draught some posters and have them nailed to posts all over the city.

I dearly wish that all these fantastic poets plan to attend the next feast at Eswyndol! Poetry in our stone grotto - a truly Lycene celebration of summer (I am not a bit remorseful of bringing such to the Thrax ward). Even should you wish not to recite something, the drinks will flow freely and the entertainment should be of high quality.

Now, what might I write? I recently tried my hand at poetry again, thanks to Marquessa Lianne and Messere Evaristo. I will need to come up with something, soon. It's only fair that the hostess lead by example, no?

Relationship Note on Viviana

I'd hazard to say that in my experience, indifference is a crime of nature, but hardly the worst of them. Willful malice and wanton cruelty go much further toward achieving their ends than indifference by its very meaning. We're not meant to be creatures of stagnation.

New pastry coming up at my store: the Manipulative Tart. You bite into expecting blackberry but then, gasp! Lemon curd. A delicious bit of wonder, inspired by less tasteful events and revelations. Jayus has a bizarre sense of humor, but I'll take it. I can't keep Raymesin from eating them, and he's suggesting other flavors to hide the lemon curd under with his mouth -still full-. He's also complaining that he'll need panels put into his trousers, yet he's still as skinny as the day he came back from Lenosia. Ridiculous.

Since so many others have been sharing I wish to share my entry from the recent poetry event regarding Time... many lovely works were recently published in the collection.

My Lord! My Lord! There you sit
Up high upon thy throne
Regal, proud, yet still a man
Caged in flesh and bone

Vassals, lands and castle tall
Given all that you demand
Yet you rage inside at the thing
No Lord can ever command

Every hair that grays, every joint that aches
A cold reminder of the deal
That all the silver in the world
Won't keep you from the Wheel

Oh Scholar! Dear Scholar! Where is your magic?
Some spell to turn back Death
A potion? Dark Bargain? I'll pay any price
To never take my last breath

There's no magic that might save you
Such promises a lie
As it is known from times long past
That even Gods may die

And so he broods upon that throne
Resigned unto his fate
Just peering into darkness
Where The End and it's Queen do wait

A final thought to reflect upon
As your years do end their climb
There is but one who defies Death
And his name, my Lord, is Time

It was always my brother who took to the side of political leadership, discussing among peers how best to spend coin to further the people. How to be cunning with a wit twice as sharp. I was always more comfortable leading men, fleets, people, doing so among them and not from the comfort of a hall.

Now though, I've watched his grand-daughter who doesn't have the same luxury as he did, a group who stood by him, challenging him when needed and ensuring the will of the people were always seen to. My niece is forced to make due with what few cards she has. So, despite our disagreements, she has named me Minister of Trade. Before I'd of scoffed at Victor if he did the same, but now...Well now if I'm going to help my family, this will be one way to do so, regardless of how little I like politics and games of titles.

Is being indifferent the worst that we can be?

I shared a few drinks with Duchess Isabeau Telmar, Prince Raimon Thrax, and Lady Poppy Stahlben at the Ambassador Salon this evening. We decided that I am, apparently, not very menacing at all. But the petite Duchess might very well be. Prince Thrax is quite the poet and while he gave me a lovely new nickname, I'm not sure it will stick.

Dear scholar, if you ever believe that your actions are worthless, that nothing you do will change what is, no matter how much you want it. Determination and dedication are still worthwhile. A bucket can be filled one drop of water at a time. It is not the fastest way to accomplish your goals, but even this way will one day succeed. And who knows, perhaps a rain will come to help you out.

Every time, I light a candle
And then I watch it burn
Thinking of your wisdom
And all that I have learned

Every time, I light a smile
For all the words you spoke
And I agree wholeheartedly
Till there's nothing left but smoke.

More of the same.

The Children of the Dream were first
But Those of Now and Always
Were cast adrift, and tore a rift
With Choice that opened hallways

And in those labyrithine cross-roads
Death and Will were roused
And now you call, for -It- and -All-
Where ancient gods are housed

O! Muse, I cry thee stay thy hand
Your touch breaks upon me like a tide
and I am overwhelmed;
Ink bleeds from me like life force
and stains the page,
raw, unfettered, free,
yet untrammeled it is,
without rhyme or meter, structure or intelligence;
I am written upon the page
in my least tamed, unbroken form
as wild as the sea
and as comprehensible.
This is no way to write an aria.

Mercy can be a great thing - it can be a honourable gift to a vanquished foe, it can be a necessary part of justice, it can be an important part of politics and the civilisations we build.

Yet, for mercy to be real, first the matter must be resolved. The battle fought. The justice delivered. The consequences felt. Then mercy can relieve one of that. Otherwise one risks devaluing all. Should you grant mercy before justice is done, before the punishment decided, you risk cheapening both. Rather than the act of remission from a just act, it becomes instead the corruption of justice by the removal of consequence and the subversion of its process.

The same can at times be true of the prodigals. In mercy and through kindness the more.....vibrant....of our nobility rush to accept and welcome them, as they should. And they seek then to assert them as the same, and even celebrate that divergence. And that is where mercy is coming too soon. First, we must make sure the prodigals adapt and accept our ways, we must perform the acts, we must show all the folk in every domain that those who would claim the right to rule understand their lives, understand our values, and respect them enough to ensure those they invite share them. That they will in turn respect our people.

Then we can have true harmony, not this false pretence that subversion of the proper forms can bring. We have seen it time and again, the hostility and hatred that can come, the misunderstandings and tragedy. So if you would welcome them as equals, and would have them join - as I hope all will - then let us perform those acts. Let us allow all to see our nobility and our faith work with the prodigals, to teach them and train them, guide and nurture them. And in those performative acts, so the seeds of respect will be planted, and in time will grow.

The sorrow of the present will pass away with the morning.

For the living are just as fertile and productive as they always have been, wise general. Death itself halts not the rate of our progress. Even impoverished we are as capable as before of affording a free life to those who wish to secure it. Although in sadness we may find ourselves mired in a colossal muddle, it is with the dawn we shall re-discover what liberty was.

There is no time but what we have now.

The Children of the Dawn were Born
of One creative Thought.
They quarreled, fell, or went insane . . .
Their creator perished-not!

Before the First Choice ever made,
One Thought alone prevailed.
IT's never left us. We -are- 'ALL'
And 'ALL' ... -can- be -unveiled-!
