Amid all else, the sensible the mad alike, I mean to gather spears for a campaign against Abandoned in the Oksehode Isles. Aye, in midwinter, though it doubles the difficulty and triples the danger. Because burning their halls and breaking their strength in this season ends the foe forever, whereas the same defeat in summer would let them hide in their hills until our warriors left or were whittled down.

Winter is a weapon, in its own way.

I have been away, and anything but idle.

The Battle of Pieros took its toll upon me, my crew and the hull of the Sea Drake. She suffered damage to her starboard side, though nothing so detrimental as to stymie my subsequent campaign to patrol the Mourning Sea against what threats to our holdings still loom. As expected, no shortage of pirates descended upon coastal settlements, leeches eager to bleed war weary citizens dry and incite malcontent. They were given no quarter.

An unexpected period of celebration followed in Maelstrom, wherein my cousin, Natasha, wedded a lord of Blackshore. Surrounded as I was then by family and friends I hadn't seen since the war commenced, I discerned the value of seizing an opportunity to settle in Arx while a measure of peace can be maintained, however fleeting.

So, here I sit in a familiar alcove at the Archive, preparing to engage in yet another series of overdue reunions. Every night I spend ashore, I'll dream of the sea.

In the past of our people, in the days of legends and when our people arrayed against those who claimed to worship not our gods but their Dark Reflections, those most dedicated to the Gods would stand for the ideals of their most beloved God. Not for land, not silver, not for victory, not for glory, or even for their personal honour - they stood because it was right, because it was where the path of the Gods had placed them. There, at that time, at that battle. The legends name them Paladins. Many fell, for victory was never assured by the Gods, but they never lacked for purpose.

Perhaps, I wonder, if it is not an age for such people once more. An age where we value not wealth nor power alone, though these have made our people strong and prosperous, but we stand once more for the Gods and their ideals, uncompromised. A new age of Paladins.

Cardinals. Swans. Ducks. Stormcrows. Canaries. So many allusions to birds so very recently. It makes me wonder if I should take it as a sign.

I likely won't.

Relationship Note on Haakon

Some of the best days in life are spent naked and running in the snow while watching butterflies spray and dance upon painted rocks.

One cannot help but marvel at the creativity and novelty of the Oathlands in the textile industry and the diversity it brings to the markets all around Arvum.
From Oakhide to Artshall, from Highhill to Cloudspine, the weavers of the Oathlands are the busiest of all the lands!

I had the absolute pleasure of being a model on behalf of House Blackram at the request of Duchess Isabeau and Lady Ivy. The outfit I was given is a stunning, vivid green wrap dress of their Cloudspine cashmere - made from the wool of Blackram's golden fainter goats! It's soft and warm and cozy, like wearing a hug. I hope I will be forgiven for wearing it all winter - it's perfect.

I didn't get to wear the velvet, but it is lovely. And also woolen! How novel.

It's been a very long time since we've had so many of the Rivens under the same roof - not all, but close enough to it.

For all the years I've spent in Arx, it's honestly the first time that Heron Hall has felt like home.

...I think at this point, I've cleaned out Tanith's bakery twice now. Everything is so good, and I just haven't been able to resist! Maybe it would be easier if I wasn't right next door.

Or if I weren't so hungry lately, I suppose.

Oh, precious darlings. Know that there's a mysterious one among us in the city, who, when answering what their favorite meal was - they said: Duke Bisland. Scandalous.

I passed by the bakery on one of my walks. Goodness. The shelves were almost cleared out, from what I could see through the shop windows.

Minnow brew. I have drunk all manner of regional refreshments while growing up in the Northlands, but nothing quite as...bold as minnow brew. I can assure anyone who may be curious that it is about as delightful as the name implies.

Hello Scholar... Oh. You're new. Great! Yes, sit down, have some soup. Of course I brought soup...
Have I told you how great it is that you've been trained to write everything down for me? It's a lovely ability to simply babble at length and know that some of this will be written down.

Yes. yes. right.
I believe that the birds can be trained. I'm not happy with what their parents did to the Lady Kiera, and that Raven, the lordling Orland, and Haakon all sought to be the ever living crap out of said birds to get across the isle. Though I believe they can be trained. And we have three eggs. If anything Shekies might have new friends. Or Pyre will have someone to look out for him.

Also a word of advice. If you show up without wine, you are a terrible guest. Bring something. It could be you're bringing a fight, at least it is something. Don't be ungracious to those that are hosting.

It's maddening. No matter what I do it won't stop. It's unrelenting. I can't hardly sleep. I can't think of anything else-nothing I do brings relief. I am going to find my wits end if this keeps up.

I'm grateful for all the words of support everyone's sent. It's heartening! There's a special, cherished few that I still need to properly thank for all their help.

So, don't be surprised if you find me on your doorstep someday soon bearing gifts or minnow brew, or both.

Death is the true desire of every soul. From the moment we are born, we are drawn toward it. It is inevitable. The Queen calls for us all, and one day will summon us to her. A wise general therefore does not fear death, as she does not fear the rising sun.

Death is perfection. It is the ultimate end of things and the point from which all beginnings arise. We live to die and we die to live once more. The cycle is as perfect as fate. And as we all bleed so to are our fates connected by this common thread.

Once we have shed the preconceived notions and trappings of life, we are able to hone our talents and skills in service to the causes which call to us. We live to experience; we experience to advance; we advance to serve; and we serve to find enlightenment.

This is the way of things.

Not Tulip. But gods does Steak or a rump roast sound real good. I asked the Mazetti Duchess for some of her poison stew. It'll clear my nose, and oh Caprice won't wanna be near me. it'll be like I ate cheese.

Ohhhh Cheese. I need to go home and see what Mum has in the larder. Bet she's got some cheese there. Caprice REALLY won't want to be near me.

Asked the Scholars what the fuck that redbird looked like.

I very rarely have a reason to walk along the edge of the Gray Forest, but if I do - I'll look for one.
