A young man asked me if I would cheer for those going to war.
And of course I will. I will cheer, I will lift my voice in support. I will see and honor their courage and their service. It is worthy of celebration.
But I look at this lad, so much promise and brightness, and I find myself thinking of how many people I miss. And I am not so very old, and yet in that moment I feel every year.
I look at this lad and wonder how many he will miss and how soon.
You young men and women who go to battle in the days to come, may you find the bravery and strength the rest of us see in you. Know that it is not a service we ask for lightly. I will know the names of all who go to battle in Oakhaven's name, and I will know the names of all that do not return. And all will have a place of honor in my heart.

I didn't know you well. But I enjoyed the drink we shared. As silks go, you didn't seem the bad sort, it's a shame we didn't get another drink. I don't imagine ye'd have been the sorts to make friends with the likes of me, but it was good company. Like so many others, yours is a name I'll carry with me.

The results of my experiment are in: the little nagging feeling does, in fact, go away when I devote myself to my heir-ish duties. Plus, as it happens, it hasn't been so bad. Thus far it's mostly involved talking to people, which is practically my favorite pastime. Maybe I can find a way to serve my House and myself, afterall.

I have come to understand that my dear husband possesses some incredible protective barrier that blocks any and all of my attempts to hit him with my staff. I do not have a reciprocal shield. Despite being close to the width of a handsomely muscled barn door he also possesses the speed of one of our hounds. This is getting embarrassing. The only time I managed to score a glancing blow was when he was standing on one foot, flapping his arms to make Aeryn laugh. Clearly I need to sacrifice some of my reading time to more physical pursuits.

I have not met the gentlemen in question, but if it would be momentous enough to draw a crowd, I'm sure the cost of admissions could be donated to the charities of their choices to benefit the Compact and its people.
