Relationship Note on Ann

[something something] need a copy [something] why would you even [something]

[now she's sitting here with her head on the desk, laughing. I don't like when she does that.]

Relationship Note on Mirari

She is incredibly charming and funny from what I've seen thus far, I do hope we're able to talk again one day soon.

Her skills at crafting scents are also incomparable. Alas I'm a widow and must buy perfume myself rather than having it bestowed as a gift but with a fragrance this enticing surely I'll be inundated with marriage proposals before the week is out.

(I jest, Scholar, I've no plans to take that particular step again any time soon. If at all.)

Relationship Note on Ann

Firstly, it is my hope to keep the villa stocked with coffee, though it proves harder than I imagined it might as everyone takes up the wonderful brew.

Secondly, ahahahaha! This is why I do not read romance writings. Nutmeg. Ha! I much prefer adventures or tales of suspense when there is time for something not academic in nature.

Taking a night off for myself tonight - reading books I've never bothered to read because I don't get why a person would read a book that has no intellectual value. But this. Look at this. There's this book about romance... The quote is, "How she felt when he kissed her—like a tub of roses swimming in honey, cologne, nutmeg and blackberries." But I just -- wouldn't nutmeg get stuck in all the hard to reach spots, glued there with honey and I mean have you ever gotten your cologne in your eye? Now imagine - no I dare not write it here. But use your imagination -- please, as a medical doctor I implore Arxians not to follow any advice in silly romance books.

You're going to need a physician shortly afterwards.

And we just can't fix stupid.

When excitment has robbed you of your wits, I believe the appropriate response is to go running around the city going "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

The Esra Debacle, as Saoirse has come to call it, was the first major scandal she witnessed in Arx. A man spoke out about all manner of hidden, quiet things. He was denounced quickly by nearly every house and major institution, but Saoirse find the question of: what do you reveal and when? to be an interesting one to debate.

Relationship Note on Ignacio

Lord Ignacio was one of the very first people Saoirse met in Arx. He participated in drinking southern vintages, spreading the word about them, and otherwise welcoming her.

Relationship Note on Wynna

I met Wynna today when she offered to help teach me how to "avoid noxious people" -- hide in shadows until they pass. She's obviously someone who is up to something and perhaps a little scandalous to know, but I find her quite intriguing nevertheless.

Princess Cadenza is my father's sister's daughter -- a cousin. Her mother actually stayed with our branch of the family after Mother died, but I was too young to remember that. Cadenza herself is a very active member of the family, engaged in many things, if not the things I personally would become involved with.

I attended the woodland ball -- in a borrowed mask. I had quite an interesting conversation with another person, of course in a mask. I decided to leave before the unmasking.

I ALSO tried to convince Cadenza to lure the madman Esra to the ball and have him poisoned, but she told me no. Ah, well!

The gift of prophecy is certainly not mine, but if I were to offer an opinion to any prospective prophets, then I would suggest that the best, most certain way of prophesying correctly is to prophesy often. That way one will, by laws of chance, sometimes be right. Our propensity to remember successes and forget failures will see to the rest - one will soon come to think of oneself as an oracle.

Of course, whether or not others believe the same is another matter entirely.

There is much to be said in the favor of mediocrity, though it is derided and despised as a whole. Unlike excellence, mediocrity makes no demands upon a person. It is comfortable, as well as nonthreatening. Imagine having to be brilliant all of the time, or constantly being concerned over whether or not you have said an obvious, or worse, banal thing. Who wants to flog their brain into its maximum ability after having woken early, worked long and hard...or even just spent a large number of hours between wakefulness and next sleep? One longs for, then, the anodyne.

There is a certain kind of mediocrity that is very harmful, however. It has always existed, but it is (or so it seems to me) much more widespread than ever before: namely, ambitious mediocrity. How many of our Peers are deeply mediocre in all respects except in their avidity for power?

An endless expanse of glittering sky stretched above, and just below my feet, the dark ocean heaved; sometimes, the cold water washed over my bare toes, stinging my skin. I was alone except for the wind that bore me on its back. I was alone, but I wasn't far from home; in the distance, I could see the great lighthouse of Brighthold, the broad beam sweeping in a great circle like a giant wishing star. I miss home so dearly, and the sight of the lighthouse that always comforted me as a child, so close, drew me to it. I wanted so desperately to go home, but the wind held me back. No, Siahnin, it told me. There's something you must do.

The wind bore me up and up, away from the sea and away from the shore, towards the stars above. I spread out my arms, and my cloak was a pair of glorious white wings, and I was flying. Exhilarated. Free. The whole world stretched below me, and in the night, the glittering lights of ships and coastal towns mirrored the firmament above. It was wonderful; I was so happy that I laughed aloud. I flew fast. Faster than the wind; I could feel myself leaving it behind me as my heart surged in my chest.

I barely had time to see the column of water that shot out of the ocean before I flew right into it; hitting it jarred my entire body, as though I'd slammed into a solid wall, and then I was inside it, my very skin being flayed by the freezing water. I felt the agony of all of my feathers being stripped away as I was buffeted this way and that, until up was down and down was up. I tumbled, helpless, lost, stripped bare by the force of the sea. Stripped of wind, and stars, and home.

When the waters receded, I found myself stepping with bare feet on soft, loamy ground, my Mercy's robe gleaming so bright that it glowed with its own faint white light. The water had stripped away everything about me that was dead or dying, everything extraneous, everything that I didn't need, and I was left clean and pure. Ready. I heard a voice in the echo of my silent footsteps. There's something you must do. I raised my head, and saw the hungry dark of a tunnel like a wound that carved itself deep into the earth. This time, I didn't hesitate.

I was ready.
