There are times when it is lovely to sit in the orangery and enjoy the lovely ambiance. At least until the air is broken by the joyful laughter and playing of children. Then it's more than lovely - it's beautiful.

I am awash with cinnamon rolls since my last entry in The Whites. I feel so terribly flattered.

Today's tea is a fragrant rosehip and citrus which smells as good as it tastes. Of course, it's nearly a dessert all on its own, but that should only count in its favour. Shouldn't it?

I had the pleasure of meeting new peole and assisting them with their research into some fairly ancient locations. I learned some things I did not know myself. ancient tales are a favorite area of study for me and nothing pleases me more than sharing of information

I saw a performance by Nightengale Gianna at the Black fox this week, a single song of melancholy and mystery leaving much contemplation. it was a story told in the voice of one who had died who wished to be remembered in song. I was a bit disappointed that the nightengale declined to reveal who the subject of the song was, but that is an artist perogative. Mysteries are wonderful things. The song was beauitiful and the performance a joy to witness.

It seems I am having quite a hard time figuring out how to put myself out there. Hopefully that changes tonight. Its been long since Asgers death, and I cannot mourn forever.

Elora has agreed to intensify training for Stormcrow and STray. She is a marvel with animals and this will mean some seriously usefull skills for them. The bird can be especially useful at sea and both have already practiced their skills on land. I am looking forward to the benefits, but it is also rewarding to see the critters growing in this way.

Recovering from the failed attempt to breach the red tower, failure doesn't mean dishonour. It's another opportunity to reflect on what we set out to do, what we did well and what we can do better to form a new strategy.

It always amuses me what the negotiating process of someone might be when they are seeking a discount on prices. As if I would work with unskilled laborers. I have a team of people that look to me for a roof and food for their families. Asking for a discount means less in their bellies, as I rarely will take any for myself. And any that is left for me, is put into making sure there is food for those that are unable to cook all day as they need to work.

The audacity of some in this city is amazing.

I have sent them out to the city to ask others about my work. I can only hope those that have my pieces will guide this one in a safer direction than the one she is on.

Relationship Note on Thena

Dear Thena,

It has been some time since I last left a message for you and the others in my journals, in the perhaps-forlorn hope you may see it one day. As always, little sister, I hope you and the others are well - you should tell Esoka that she is missed, she would be happy I think with some things we have been up to. And you would be amused. Especially about my having to fight through a throng of swans who had clearly become very panicked or diseased by the attackers at Bastian.

We recovered an old artifact, a lantern that belonged to the Templars long ago. One you and I once found mention of. The stories say a gift from gloria herself - certainly it is a beautiful item, I can imagine why they say it. It's light seems to cast away any shadow. We found it in an old settlement of abandoned - another more aggressive lot, linked to an abandoned warlord who has been causing trouble of late, were trying to take it. The group with me stood our ground and we won the day, and we found the relic and recovered it. I couldn't help think to that old abandoned castle we went to long past, where we found that old shield and that broken war table, do you remember?

I am off soon to the Mourning Isles, to Maelstrom. We will celebrate the Feast of Alor Valardin there, honour one of the founders of the Orthodoxy - and yes, I can hear your face scrunching from here. My obligation is to first preserve Arvum from Eurusi threat, and the last one remains in the Isles - Waldo and those nobles who hide and support him, while presenting a false face of obedience to the Faith. I should suspect we will find him, and I do regret the damage caused by any who seek to hide or support him still. But. The Faith is clear, they have been given long enough to make the choice of obedience. And so the hand of friendship withdraw, must the Templars go in. A mailled fist holding sword and shield. If you come across any of his lot on your travels, do try to avoid them. They are not good people, Thena.

Let the others know I think of them still, and keep yourself safe on your journeys. There is much more I would tell you, but perhaps that is all for that time when we might all rest once more. Just do not wait too long - I do not think I am destined to have grey hairs.

Ever faithfully,

Preston

It's a difficult thing, Scholar, when an honourable person serves one who thinks honour worthless. When a great person finds themselves beholden to one who thinks of them as less than the cattle in the fields. When a brave soul who just wants to do good in the world finds themselves dancing to the whims of those who are anything but. And yet such has been the lot of the commoner under many noble lords.

Be very careful of the gifts you accept, Scholar, and from whence they come. Some of the greatest and most powerful souls ever seen just wanted to do good, and weren't careful enough about how they did it. Some of the best have been told they can strike at the enemy's heart, without realising the blade they've been given cuts the wielder as readily as their foe. And some of the wisest have not seen that the one who offers them power works deception as easily as breathing.

Tread warily, Scholar. Not all is as it seems in this world, and power is never freely given. Make sure you know what is being taken in exchange. Time spent in the Lyceum will teach anyone that, and it's best to learn it before you go there. But does that answer your question? Excellent. Same time on Tuesday? I'll see you there.

I've spent the past few days largely shut in my room, annotating a number of books. It's been utterly fascinating.

But gods, I miss the days when Mama or Papa would bust in and give me an earful about neglecting my diplomacy lectures. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self to treasure it while it lasted.

The Gifts of the Empire session went well; even better than I had hoped for. Some gifts are still outstanding as I have to have items crafted to fulfill the requirements, or must hold meetings with the recipients. But these will happen in time and I think all involved have at least a modicum of patience for what's coming.

Of the requests, I find these things interesting:
* Most Requested: Jade
* Most Unique: Language Lessons/Sea Charts (Tied)
* Most Interesting: Touring the Lowers
