The safer I can do everything, the better. But I've learned it's not always a guarantee..

I meant to do something new in the shop, but the ideas simply would not come. Weightier thoughts, maybe, interfering with my creative ones. Worry, I guess it is? Sometimes putting good metal into fighting hands just isn't enough.

I think the meeting went well. There were some unexpected occurrences and information, but those will only help us with the task at hand, I believe. I am so grateful that people took the time to attend, both from the Northlands and from outside of them. What I love about the Northlands is that each House is fiercely independent and unique. With such comes a variety of experiences, knowledge, and perspectives that when put together, tends to form a stronger picture. I feel so fortunate to count so many of my fellow leaders in the North my friends as well. I am also glad for our allies in the Templars and that the Carnifex so often takes the time to join us in our planning discussions. While we may all debate the best way to go about something, or the most intelligent way, one thing I think we all agree on: protecing the people we are responsible for.

Thanks to this meeting and the generous input from everyone who attended - and I do mean everyone - I think we have the beginnings of an outline. I will have to review my notes and send out further inquiries, but it is more than I had this morning when I got out of bed. For that, once again, I am immeasurably grateful.

I should note, too, that meetings like this make me miss Marian's presence in the city a great deal. I know she needs to be in Farhaven, of course, and is busy enough with matters there. I am always reminded of being new to Arx and seeing her command the great hall for these sorts of thing, I suppose.

I must remember to vary my instrument playing and practices more often. I've been neglecting the harp because it reminds me so much of Talwyn. I miss my husband while he is away from the tower.

War. Never without its price and as unpredictable as any other force of nature. Yet unlike storms, tidal waves and raging volcanoes, it is within our control to begin and end war.

Yet chaining such hounds once unleashed is far more easily said than done.

Lord Myrgo Eswynd, named by my husband to honor the late duchess of House Tyde, was born some days past. I am always in awe of how very small newborns are. And how very much they look like their elderly relatives (blame all the wrinkles, I suppose). Myr does not look like a Saik that I can recall, so he must look like an Eswynd. Or perhaps like Haakon's father? A shame to have never met the man, but I carry a length of prayer beads he once did. Births continue to make me sentimental over some strange thoughts.

Even though the battle was lost, I am honored to witness some of the bravest moments I have ever laid my eyes upon. There were many courageous people out there, but there is one moment that stood above the rest for me. Even while we were being boarded by an enemy vessel, I could not help but to observe the glory of the ship named Candlelight, led by Lord Wash Kennex himself! Even though several houses have begun their retreat after heavy losses, some remained, Wash Kennex was one of them. Even though pitch and tar were lobbed on his ship and firey arrows sailed into his vessel, Wash Kennex fought on. Most people would call the ship as lost and abandon ship. Not Wash Kennex! That salty bastard turned his ship and drove it towards the enemy fleet! It was glorious, even if in the end the Candlelight was lost. I am not sure how, but the man survived all that. It was am honor to witness such bravery.

We lost the battle, but in the end, we will not loose this war. I am not one who is used to defeat. I admit, I am angry and this fuels me. Those oppresive, slaving, arses will get their just dessert.

It's an old adage, that when one seeks passage with their baggage down narrow lanes choked with garbage they may be subject to a savage stabbage. It arrives as a package, the stabbage and the scabbage and the only remedy is a bandage made of cabbage or clean linen wrappage and a big bowl of pottage enjoyed in the safety of your cottage.

...

I didn't manage to fit ravage in there. I think I need more help.

House Igniseri lost more than half of its fleet in the battle of Redshore Reef this week. It was heart wrenching to see so many ships go down, even though every one of them fought to save a life, some of them freed thralls themselves. Each person we lost will be honored in Igniseri lands.

Why are people so bent on keeping Thralldom. Is something akin to keeping people as slaves that important? Can't they, too, see that in keeping them they are being chained as well? Chained to a system and society that values people as nothing more than property to be held until some unseen debt is paid as more debt adds up? If they let their people have choice, allow them to prosper and flourish, don't they understand that their holdings would prosper and flourish as well? How much more work would get done if the people under them were allowed to be happy? The Dagonites are so, so short sighted that the'd rather kill kin and family over their right to keep people as chattle.

After going over the books, we not be able to rebuild our fleet until sometime long into the spring or summer, which I believe means we're going to miss one of the incursions. By some stroke of luck, some of the Dagonite men surrendered to us, rather than taking their chances in the water, and we have some prisoners. I do not know how much the Dagonites care about these men, specifically House Bloodbrook, but maybe we shall see. Until that time, they will be well kept as guests of House Igniseri, and afforded the comforts that the reaved thralls the Dagonites do not get.

Returning to Arx at such a time has been an experience. One that's shown me how much I have yet to learn to truly consider myself 'up to date'. Fortunately, there seems to be a great many opportunities to learn, and I look forward to nothing more.

I worry over my people, the ones from our ill-turned experiment. We do not rest, we do not sleep. The Arvani healers that are bent to finding a cure for this affliction are self-less and well-led, but I am relieved that Kenjay did not follow me. I have faith Miles and the others will find a way. They will.

They must.

"Stabbage"

verb. - colloquialism used in the lower Setarcan disctricts

The motion one makes while wielding a luncheon knife when a certain infamous Crow messenger has left so many letters that they are overflowing off the table, and the receiver has not opened a single one, but he asked for a sandwich.
