Winter has always been my favorite season. Unfortunate that this year's had ended first in toxic snow and then in a tragedy. The cold has not been a welcome feeling since.

Yet now that the sun shines warm and bright, there isn't an ounce of comfort to be had with foreign emissaries at our door.

No rest to be had, merely one punch after another. Exhausting. Yet we press on.

As I read some of the recent journals and declarations written by my fellow members of the compact, I feel encouraged at the sense of community and pride displayed therein. Yet as strongly as we should embrace our power to shape our own destiny without needing to be controlled by powers from another continent, we shouldn't reject this opportunity to finally establish connections to these distant lands.

We should treat our guests with all the respect that they deserve and do what we can to build connections that might allow Arx to rise to new heights of prosperity and civilization, bulwarking us against the influences of the Abyss.

I think the first Commoner's Council meeting was a great success! Lots of passionate minds among us, and I think we are doing good work. If I haven't said it already, thank you to those who voted me into the Council. If anyone ever has a need to speak with me, I will always have an ear, and make time. We are here for you, to be your voice. Let your voices be heard, and in turn, I hope that we can be a beacon of hope in these interesting times.

From what I've seen there isn't really anyone who is vocal who is buying into either of these pitches. If you are perhaps let me know, I'm always interested in others opinions.

Okay. I'm sometimes slightly interested in others opinions.

I would have much preferred merchants with the open hand of trade to the silken clad iron fist of a potentate flagellating himself before us with his own sense of self-importance.

Relationship Note on Khanne

Someone pointed me to a journal referencing my own. Does that make for a vicious circle?

In any event, Lady Khanne, I agree with your very well put point. We can remember them and believe in ourselves.

That belief will lead us to action, and in hopefully good directions.

I happened by Dame Ida's shop yesterday to take a look at the new pieces she advertised having available. Though I didn't manage to see any of her new pieces, I did have the good fortune to meet up with the smith herself. She indulges me by letting me talk about ideas I think would be interesting to see in her shop, and sometimes she will make those pieces. Yesterday we spoke about our strange, foreign visitors who have dropped anchor in our harbor, and how we might give heart to the people of the Compact.

So we came upon the idea that it would be lovely to see everyone in the city wearing a bit of copper, in remembrance of the woman Copper, called the protector of Arvum, and the example she set for us. It would be a symbol that we all stand together in this, that Arvum can defend ourselves, and we do not need a foreign power's protection. Copper is such a common, ordinary metal, but rich in a variety of colors and suitable for many uses. One can imagine an elaborate piece of jewelry, or simply a copper coin on a ribbon. I hope it won't be long before we'll see the warm, bright shine worn throughout Arx's streets and halls.

So many things happening all at once now. We truly live in fascinating times. Unnatural snow. Two sets of visitors providing overtures. Other odds and ends. one could probably argue times are boring. Yet I no longer think so, myself.

Those ships belonging to other nations, things making me rather uneasy. Making me think I am going to be a little boy again waking up and smelling smoke as my home burns, while, I am far from a child this time. I had just gotten over the dreams after that damned rain. I got nothing but a sense of trouble over the ocean. Maybe, it's time to have chat with some people I don't want to see hurt throughout whatever happens. It goes against my initial idea at coming to the city proper. But it's not like the situation is likely to get better anytime soon. Well, hopefully in the least I get some more work and the nobility figure out a proper plan to deal with this long term.

An interesting day the other day. Went about my usual walks through the shrines, trying to clear my head thinking the Gods may give me a hand and met the Archscholar. A surprisingly warm seeming person, ran into a handful of silks, too. Luckily, I managed to not say something stupid. Unfortunately, I fear that may of ran it's course when I spoke to the other person there. I really owe Rinel an apology the next time I see her. Prodded at a bad memory in my curiosity.

I leave soon for the South. I am starting to wonder if it even matters. What does any of it matter?

I am what I am. Perhaps I should give up on this ridiculous adventure.

There is an awful lot to write about. It's been quite the last two weeks for me - trips outside of Arx, unbelievable buildings and stories to tell, tales that I will be writing and expanding on for hours, and most importantly, life well-lived. I've reaffirmed for myself that being out in the world doing things is where I'm meant to be, now that what I've been working so long to do is finally underway.

Not that it seems to make a lick of difference. It's amazing what people are willing to overlook, isn't it, once it becomes convenient for them to do so? Who cares that a House has decided that it's heirloom blade, the very symbol of its honor, should remain a sword that was stolen from a commoner by a traitor to the Compact? Despite that very same House's own vows to her?

No, despite my willingness to work with some members of House Telmar on some other things, I've still not forgotten that, nor have I set it to the side. I have been assured things are being worked upon. But I suspect they are trying to wait until I am dead, at which point their honor is totally irredeemable and they will never be able to make this right.

An interesting choice. And no, I'm not writing this as a Softest Whisper - that's an occupation, darlings, and not what I am by birth. No moreso than a smith writing their own opinions of a wrong they have suffered.

Still, I live the life I was meant to. I have seen wondrous things. We've been reminded there is a whole world out there; I'm quite certain I will see more, so long as some of you idiots don't fuck this up.

I suppose that wasn't very diplomatic.

Whoops.

Here's hopin' that after the foreign 'dignitaries' have been dispatched that Victus ain't gonna stand on a boat and tell Marcus or the Undying Emperor t' bring friends the next time.

Maybe he should see to it that his victory speech is better prepared this time round?

Are we really going to send them to negotiate? Is this the best idea for the Compact? Here's hopin' that they chose this Shard woman because she's got the most sense in the Compact or somethin.

I love the Winter, but I am happy that the Spring is here and that it is warming up. There will be much to do. A lot of it not good if the visitors to our shores are any indication as to what is on the horizon. But we will persevere and make it through this.

A thought on hopeā€¦.

Hope is truly a funny thing. We never truly know how important it is until it is gone from our lives. And yet, it is one of the most powerful things we have.

Hope can get us through the worst of times, nurture our dreams and lift our spirits. It protects us from being drowned by misfortune or uncertain circumstances. It keeps us strong when we need it most and helps us keep rising, thinking, dreaming and moving forward against all odds. It is the light that we need to keep trying just a little more. Without it, we are empty.

To give hope is the greatest gift one can offer. It is a gift of new life, purpose and drive. An expectation and desire for a certain things to happen. A chance for better things and a better future. This is a magic more powerful than we often realize.

There are times that this is not always easy to do, but do it we must. Because, in the end, it may be all that we have to see us through.

An Addendum: My previous commentary was most certainly not intended as in some way inviting these foreign powers into our society. Nor that we should consider their offers of 'protection'. My commentary was that we ought not allow our resolve become arrogance, and they we need to consider our horizon carefully. We have survived much, and will continue to survive many other situations. However, we cannot be assured of surviving another Reckoning level attack.
