I love the Winter, but I am happy that the Spring is here and that it is warming up. There will be much to do. A lot of it not good if the visitors to our shores are any indication as to what is on the horizon. But we will persevere and make it through this.

A thought on hope….

Hope is truly a funny thing. We never truly know how important it is until it is gone from our lives. And yet, it is one of the most powerful things we have.

Hope can get us through the worst of times, nurture our dreams and lift our spirits. It protects us from being drowned by misfortune or uncertain circumstances. It keeps us strong when we need it most and helps us keep rising, thinking, dreaming and moving forward against all odds. It is the light that we need to keep trying just a little more. Without it, we are empty.

To give hope is the greatest gift one can offer. It is a gift of new life, purpose and drive. An expectation and desire for a certain things to happen. A chance for better things and a better future. This is a magic more powerful than we often realize.

There are times that this is not always easy to do, but do it we must. Because, in the end, it may be all that we have to see us through.

An Addendum: My previous commentary was most certainly not intended as in some way inviting these foreign powers into our society. Nor that we should consider their offers of 'protection'. My commentary was that we ought not allow our resolve become arrogance, and they we need to consider our horizon carefully. We have survived much, and will continue to survive many other situations. However, we cannot be assured of surviving another Reckoning level attack.

The first free human kingdom of Arvum was formed alongside the Twilight Court of the Nox'alfar thousands of years before the Reckoning, in part to escape slavery in Caer'alfar.

This portion of our history may have been forgotten for many lifetimes, but let us not sacrifice our freedom to bow to the yoke of a foreign power.

A gilded cage is still a cage.

Thank you lady Telmar for running the Winter Gauntlet, I was honored to compete, and this beautiful sword crafted by Dame Ida will serve me well, I have no doubt.

Also congratulations to Baron Farwatch and Master Valtyr on their wins, too. A great day all the way around and a much better personal showing than when I competed in 1008.

In these times I find myself reading again and again the Canticle of the Long Vigil. Written centuries back by Father Alessandro Rubino. I read it searching for more hints and clues. Especially now.

My mind rings with one line again and again. ‘Beware the coming war between a Platinum Empire, the Triarchs, and the lords of the sky.’ I think that time has come. And I am uneasy.

As an commander of soldiers is the night before an unknown engagement. My skin prickles and my stomach gnaws more than usual. But we will stand strong and together. Reading the response to the proclamations tells me that much. So at least I can sleep.

Dresses or jewelry, what should be my next surprise for a sprite who uses an ax near as big as she is tall?

Relationship Note on Quenia

The Marquessa and I have made fast friends this past week. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to spend more time with her. She gifted me some peach wine which I am sure I will enjoy soon enough.

Band together, Arxians! Let your inner copper shine through.

Show those arrogant toffs from across the sea they can sod off, them and their fancy steelsilk and platinum both.

Put on a copper scarf, a copper jewel and show your solidarity.

Oh, this is so exciting!

I mean, sure, potential invasion, ultimatums, and all of that. But just think - for the first time in, goodness, maybe forever! Foreign nations have contacted us in ways that aren't just 'sail mysteriously into port, off load goods, leave without saying goodbye'. That's progress!

Well. They're still doing the 'sail mysteriously into port' thing. But I hope that we could come to an accord with both of them - think of the business opportunities and the new markets for all three nations if regular trade could be established! Think of the new places to explore! It would be very exciting.

I am hoping for a moderate level of excitement, really. More excitement than 'they get bored and sail away', but less excitement than 'when we say no, they raze the Compact'. Somewhere in between would be nice, and helpful.

Too damned much to do, too damned little time. Isn't that the way it always seems to be these days? Ahh well, better get back at it!

First off on my list is thanking the folks that voted for me for the council. So, if you're reading this and you voted for me, thanks! Anyone that needs me or wants to talk about it or about plans, just send me a note and I'll make time for you.

Now on to the next things on the list.

Relationship Note on Lisebet

I saw a note in the archives written by Lady Lisebet Farshaw, speaking of some time she spent in the Hall of Heroes not only with Copper's statue but with each in the main hall; viewing, reading their plaques. She said, "they believed in us, and in return all we can do is remember them." To this, I wish to add:

The best way we can honor and remember them is to believe in ourselves.

The dark clouds, the melancholy and dread, keep coming, wearing different guises. But I find my strength -- meager as it is -- in friends, family and even strangers. Strength comes in different guises too, as does Wisdom. As does Hope.

-in the stranger become friend who sang me a song, who reminds me to value second chances.
-in a Shaman mentor become friend who lets me know I am not alone.
-in the unexpected fervent embrace of one who reminds me there are times to leave dark thoughts behind.
-in the friends who've become family by ties that bind us in ways both welcome and frightening.
-in the cousin whose strength and diplomacy in all things I can only aspire to.
-in the sister and best of friends who buoys me up with every smile and every promise, and has yet to break one.
-in my family and all of our fellow citizens, our soldiers and our leaders, who rise up to fight against that which threatens us.

I did not dream. I did not sleep.

I was a fish that ventured too far into the deep dark, I was a hummingbird outside a window, and I was an oak tree which has stood since the Reckoning.

In my mind I leapt from cloud to cloud, surveying the world below from on high. Which we all know is impossible because clouds are much akin to quicksand and if one did attempt to leap from cloud to cloud, they would suffocate as they're sucked into the center of them.

On the shoulder of a behemoth of brass and power, we marched among the highest peaks and the lowest valleys. Not to conquer, not to wage war, but to simply enjoy the world laid out before us as two enemies-turned-friends. Knowing nothing of one another but names.

It was all captured in a moment as vibrant as a child's laughter and I felt alive. As the sun shined on one horizon, the moon brought darkness to the other. A world in the midst of change and it was my purpose to both endure and enjoy the change, since it was for the better. While the sun set and the moon rose, or perhaps the moon set and the sun rose, I sat and enjoyed it on a lush hilltop as a lion with a mane of leaves.

It's going to be a good day. If not, then there is pie tomorrow morning. That way the day starts off just a little better than the last ended.

We have endured. We have people who are capable of miraculous things. We do not need foreign forces. We will continue to endure. Why? Because Arx /is/ remembering. More and more. Little by little. Through the strength and continued work of our own people, our own heroes.

There is hope, Marquis Fairen Leary, I undoubtedly assure you.

Jaenelle was swift in her welcome upon my arrival in Arx, which was all the more impressive considering the sheer volume of goings-on in the city at the moment. We haven't had a chance to meet in person as yet, but I look forward to learning more of this Thrax-born Voice of Velenosa.
