- Fought and lost again to the Lady General. She's better, as I am. Don't expect to win
- Prince Cicero gave me a gift. I can't possibly wear it. Seasilk! It's the second most valuable thing I own.
- Brier's new shoes are clattering on cobbles wonderfully. It makes me laugh whenever I hear it.
- Lady Niamh and Lady Juliet are still being incredibly support.
- I got tired of Hana telling me she was too busy to come hunting and got her a pony. Now she has to come!

Except... I will.
Lady Sarielle and Lady Lili have apparently died in the Grey Forest. Looking for their parents, I hear. The most utterly, stupid, suicidal action I've ever heard of, given the fact that Shav warbands are roaming everywhere right now.
My head hurts. My heart hurts.
I almost wish I had just strangled these two foolish girls myself. Their corpses would be here, with us. And no foolish sons of mine would be tempted to go out there to recover their bodies during these unpredictable times.
But I'll miss them.

Hopefully that ends this whole sordid affair.
Back to the drinking.

You won't believe what a week I've had. Duke Cristoph Laurent -- yes, the family with the bees! -- held a tournament and I was allowed to participate. I think it went well and Fluff did me proud in the joust. I don't rightly know how it happened, too, but I won the melee, mostly because I was lucky and fought with a very fine warrior at my side, Princess Marian Valardin. I know you both wanted to come and visit once things were settled, but I think it's probably best if you stay home for a while yet. There are dangerous things happening, and it's not safe to travel, even on the good roads. I'm sending what funds I can via the Faith, but stay safe, and if you see anything strange at all you go right to the Count and seek sanctuary. Don't go up into the mountains alone if you can avoid it.
I'll do my best to keep making you both proud.
Love,
Roland

I still read - and my first instinct is to reach for my pen, to scribe a letter.
To be there. To comfort. To tell her to come to me and let me hold her and drive away the darkness. It's a foolish notion, I know. A selfish one, even. We can't drive away the darkness, we can only pretend it's not there, for a little while. But sometimes, that is necessary. Sometimes you need the joy and the laughter and the kisses and the touches before you can go back to whatever it is you do to keep the world turning.
But I miss being the soft girl.
I miss being with her.
I hope that she will return to me again.

I am pleased to say that Lord Regent Gabriel seemed inclined to provide some resources to the Lower Boroughs, to help us through the coming winter. It's not a solution to all our problems. It's not a permanent fix. I didn't even try to bring up any sort of more complicated matters, not because I felt I could not, but because it was not the time and place.
What's most important is that the Regent seems inclined to help.
Gods willing, he will continue to help.

We know how to handle winter. It requires lots of blankets, hot tea, and at least one lover. And not leaving our nest of furs and comforters until the frost ceases to tease our windows.
