Relationship Note on Gaston

My little brother has come to the city, and I am glad for it. He is devoted to helping the family - and it doubles the number of us here in Arx. Can't say yet how long he will want to remain within civilization.

It seems that the Lady Sudara Pravus has been spreading tales in the city regarding "Prince Torgen" (sic) and his progeny: these have found their way to me by more than one route. As someone who thought that she was in fact Sudara Pravus, and furthermore believed that she was the mother of Trogen's children, this has come as a shock to me on more than one level. Indeed, it has even been intimated to me by one individual that I do not have a right to learn the source of these tales, since it is "a family matter" for her - yet somehow not for me! I am sure that there are worse ways to offend a widow; this is, however, the most direct insult on the matter of my husband and my marriage that I have received since his death. As it is, I am decidedly keen to discover quite who has been letting it be known that "Sudara Pravus" is behind such stories.

The Gala of Grief's Reflection was beautiful. There was wine, and dancing, and laughter, and god memories, and flowers.

Oh gods the flowers. Every color you could ever think of and I am sure you would have been able to name every last one.

I don't know if these words will reach you, but I will say a pray to Vellichor that he keeps them safe for you. Thank you. You were a gift to us all.

A lot of duels lately, good for business (although so far not my business). It seems all that's happening gets the silks blood flowing. Here's hoping I can get one of them to remember my name.

Prince Velenosa, although he does not like to hear of it. Afraid I did not manage to impress in that first melee, perhaps I will another time. I'll have to ask about those Mirrormask secrets, because my leg is killing me right now.

Brazen and flattering words, with a confidence in his skills that have lost him three wolf pelts so far. I will expect them to be delivered to me soon. Trophies can only be worn if won in battle afterall, it'll warm me through the winter.

A more wonderful liege and boss one could not ask for. Kind, considerate, and stern when he needs to be. I am proud to call myself redrain-sworn with him in command.

These days are being hard.
I'm not sure why but I'm feeling lost and without a purpose.
I know I have one. I know I have to recover the Grove. But there isn't anything else I can do and... Things are just hard, just different.
The people I thought I could trust, I cannot talk with them or they are gone.
I guess time always put everything in its place, and mine not never was around people. And despite other people's words I never had a family.

Apparently trading in tanned hides from my years surviving on my own in the wilds can help a little with trading in resources in this city. Here is to hoping I've helped the family with setting up a trade route exchange with that tall Redrain, Agnarr.

- Continuing to gather supplies to prepare Arx. The Lodge are hunting for meat, escorting grain supplies and chasing vermin from farms.
- Fought and lost again to the Lady General. She's better, as I am. Don't expect to win
- Prince Cicero gave me a gift. I can't possibly wear it. Seasilk! It's the second most valuable thing I own.
- Brier's new shoes are clattering on cobbles wonderfully. It makes me laugh whenever I hear it.
- Lady Niamh and Lady Juliet are still being incredibly support.
- I got tired of Hana telling me she was too busy to come hunting and got her a pony. Now she has to come!

Words cannot describe my feelings. So I won't.

Except... I will.

Lady Sarielle and Lady Lili have apparently died in the Grey Forest. Looking for their parents, I hear. The most utterly, stupid, suicidal action I've ever heard of, given the fact that Shav warbands are roaming everywhere right now.

My head hurts. My heart hurts.

I almost wish I had just strangled these two foolish girls myself. Their corpses would be here, with us. And no foolish sons of mine would be tempted to go out there to recover their bodies during these unpredictable times.

But I'll miss them.

Dear Ma and Da,

You won't believe what a week I've had. Duke Cristoph Laurent -- yes, the family with the bees! -- held a tournament and I was allowed to participate. I think it went well and Fluff did me proud in the joust. I don't rightly know how it happened, too, but I won the melee, mostly because I was lucky and fought with a very fine warrior at my side, Princess Marian Valardin. I know you both wanted to come and visit once things were settled, but I think it's probably best if you stay home for a while yet. There are dangerous things happening, and it's not safe to travel, even on the good roads. I'm sending what funds I can via the Faith, but stay safe, and if you see anything strange at all you go right to the Count and seek sanctuary. Don't go up into the mountains alone if you can avoid it.

I'll do my best to keep making you both proud.

Love,
Roland

Shavs might practice shamanism. That doesn't mean all those who follow the way of the spirits are shavs. Really.

They still deliver copies of her white journals - I don't want them to stop doing that.

I still read - and my first instinct is to reach for my pen, to scribe a letter.

To be there. To comfort. To tell her to come to me and let me hold her and drive away the darkness. It's a foolish notion, I know. A selfish one, even. We can't drive away the darkness, we can only pretend it's not there, for a little while. But sometimes, that is necessary. Sometimes you need the joy and the laughter and the kisses and the touches before you can go back to whatever it is you do to keep the world turning.

But I miss being the soft girl.

I miss being with her.

I hope that she will return to me again.

Relationship Note on Monique

The Minx of the Marshes, I do believe she is likely a close comparison to how I was in my younger days, just a female version. I also believe that she is a bad influence for a man who wishes to do right by his family and be a good nobleman, she still allows her feral wild-side. Will be interesting to see what comes of that friendship.

Only one person responded to my very genuine and very nice request to assist the nobility in understanding all the matters they simply do not! That's ok. I've set out on my own to bend ears.

I am pleased to say that Lord Regent Gabriel seemed inclined to provide some resources to the Lower Boroughs, to help us through the coming winter. It's not a solution to all our problems. It's not a permanent fix. I didn't even try to bring up any sort of more complicated matters, not because I felt I could not, but because it was not the time and place.

What's most important is that the Regent seems inclined to help.

Gods willing, he will continue to help.
