My life is too full of complicated crap. Show me who to kill. Show me who to heal. Enough with lies and secrets and monsters and magic and shit that wants us dead from outside the world as we know it. I'm finding out a lot about my self in times of tribulation and I'm stronger than I thought I was... but strong can also be brittle when struck in the right place and I fear if and when that happens.

There is no one god whose nature makes the truth their sole province. Each of them loves it in their own way. The Sentinel loves truth as the instrument of justice; Limerance, where honesty is the only path of true loyalty and love; Gloria, as the sword of the righteous; Gild, because the lack of truth is the enemy of understanding -- only true need benefits from charity, where all else would simply be greed --

I could go on.

When a duel is fought to honor Gloria, it is the trueness of the heart that must be vindicated by victory. I honor ArchDuke Niccolo for accepting that in his gracious speech at the duel yesterday, for in his acknowledgment of Princess Reese's victory, he recognized that Her Highness acted boldly, for love of family. Even a mistaken understanding, taken righteously, is no dishonor --discourtesy, perhaps, at times -- but no dishonor!

Count Thesarin cautioned against the ready heat of blood in these dark times, and I do not gainsay my liege by so saying. Yet I think that, should tempers fire, it is best that matters be resolved quickly and cleanly in this way. Let these traditions be embraced by all who need them.

I mean, I definitely don't plan on insulting anybody, but if I do so on accident, please challenge me and let's have it out, before Gloria, before the Sentinel! Let this be a standing invitation to all. Let nothing fester in your heart! Truth and openness are the only paths to knowledge and friendship.

Shining a light is the only way to find your way in the dark.

Relationship Note on Rainier

Meet him at The Gauntlet, showed him how to run the course. I think he fell in love with it. I can't blame him I rather like running through the course. It was interesting meeting him, discussing different styles in which we were taught to use a blade. I suppose I should go see how he learned. He spoke about running drills with the knights he teaches. I am interested to see what that is like.

The new operator of the Commons Medical Clinic, which is now under the oversight of Master Benjamin of the Physician's Guild.

My initial impressions lead me to believe she has a good heart, which usually comes with any good healer. She wishes for me to visit her from time to time, there or elsewhere, and hopefully I can find the time to do so in between fighting crime!

I am thoroughly pleased with the table and wardrobe I had crafted for Lady Anabelle and House Lyonesse, and I suspect I will continue to be impressed by the training blades her house produces. I will be stocking our Armory with them at the earliest opportunity, so I don't behead my recruits on accident. I thought I was careful -enough-, but I was proven quite wrong...

Several individuals have stepped forward to offer their aid in helping us with the increasing violence in the Boroughs, and I am gradually becoming optimistic about our chances in holding it together.

I look forward to participating in the tournament. We haven't had a good tournament in a long while!

So I learned how to dodge by having things thrown at me. I was never the kid who played catch, I was the kid who got out of the way. As I've gotten better I've had some more dangerous things thrown my way. I guess I got used to it.

So when someone asked me to teach them the art of evasion, I tried to go for something less dangerous. Vegetables! Dodging vegetables is easy, right? Well, I forgot why people normally throw produce at each other.

I don't think she'll want to talk to me again.

How do I even begin to start. I really don't want to give the poor scribes nightmares so let's just say 'Well that was interesting' and leave it at that.

Dear nobility of Arx,

It has come to my attention that many of you do not know what has been happening in the Boroughs. That you don't even know what life in the Boroughs is like. It makes sense. How could you know of a place you've never been?

It has also come to my attention that many of you all like me for some reason.

So, if any of you are seeking a conversation with a lowly Boroughs girl, I am easily coaxed into conversation over a hot meal and nice tea.

I'm serious! I like talking. I like it when you all are informed.

Sincerely,
Mae Culler

The duel was quite interesting to watch. It did not happen as I expected it to, but I am satisfied that Gloria was honoured on both sides. I feel the situation that led to it all to be quite a simple matter, and not one I would've issued the original challenge over, but in the name of these things, the end result is that there should now be nothing held against the other on either side. Which is how it should be I think.

People are really getting busy around the Grove lately. It's good to see everyone working together in the restoration. While the others bring in new soil and plants, I've taken it upon myself to stock the area with fauna.

Yes, fauna. Birds, bugs, beasts. Little beasts. Actually, more like, I'm coaxing them to return by adding feeders and all that. I don't think they'd be very happy about being tied there if they didn't want. Honestly, I don't even know if that'll work but it's worth a try.

For now, Atila and Tempest are the part-time beast sentinels. Maybe they'll attract attention. Maybe they'll scare the critters away.

Really, I just hope Atila doesn't pee on the altar again.

I don't think I'm going to last long if I keep drinking so much before bedtime. Herbs don't help either. Maybe it shouldn't be just herbs? Maybe a pinch of this and a dash of that...

I should start making my rounds in apothecaries. There ought to be at least /something/ new every month.

How can I make sense of this? Everything moves as if nothing happened yet I feel an ache within my chest. I swear, I will bring both of you justice. I don't know what you heard of your parents in the Grey Forest, or why you saw fit to go without escort, but what happened to you will not stand. It will not be met without action.

I promise you that.

The world owes us nothing. It promises less.

I say, quietly: seize it. The way hands seize into your loved one's hair, caught up. Entangled.

Midnight knows me.
By dawn, it's gone - I'm gone.

In this way I control my heart: each withheld thought and word strung like beads, one after another, on a chain to wear around my neck.

I wear my actions and the answers I am waiting to give.

The bittersweet of victory

She came from the ashes. With tears upon her lashes.

With adoring hot upon her gaze. Within the whiskey haze.

With sorrow upon heart. Together we fell apart

From a flame of memory. Whiskey mountain reverie.

I said i would and said I should and I said I could.

The burden is on the blade. As it shall be weighed

A challenge was made. My challenge and my blade

First the words were why..why...

The why of tears on lashes. The why of embers in her ashes.

Nightfall in my pale arms. He cannot help his charms.

An apology expressed. An offense addressed.

For a man so idolized with her soft blue eyes.

With adoring flame of gaze. The heated whiskey haze

The sorrow in her heart. That together we fell apart

From a flame of memory. Her memory. The Whiskey reverie

No love where heart not yearn. No lust where eyes not burn

The burden is on the blade. This duel was no true aid.

For my cousin of the soft blue gaze. Onto their grounds, I ablaze.

Before their mourning banners. A duel without the glamour

I had no anger and no pride. Standing mortified.

With the need to follow though. With the need to for a renew

For the offense I had made. To pray upon my blade.

To stand for my name, the Grayson name.

No blame, but my own blame.

To stand for the one I had claimed.

Not her blame, but my blame.

With a Duke’s bumble bees. Did, I strike, at the knees.

Sir Talen, the Dark Knight, I came ready to fight.

I came prepared for the pain. I came ready for the blame.

I came braced for a defeat. This win so bittersweet.

My head held high in shame. For his chest, I did aim.

Blow by blow we stood. I drew the red of his knighthood.

Crimson upon Laurent’s bees. A startled crowd did see

I came for defeat. A win so bittersweet

A hush over the crowd and then he said aloud

For Gloria this day is done. Let us cheer, for she has won.

Why would Gloria bring this euphoria

Upon a this girl who unawares championed upon bright tears

The apology was given and the offense now forgiven

The reason for this fight by the end upright

The blade bare blame not the one with her flames

Let golden one bare no shame.

Niccolo gave grace and honor with words, solo

Sir Talen did take the blade to give his Archduke his aid.

At risk time and time again to defend a domain and never to complain

To gloria who brought this euphoria. A win so bittersweet.

Let tears not wet her lashes. Let her rise from the ashes.

Let the whiskey mountain be a reverie in our memory.

Relationship Note on Reese

When I first returned to Arx, Princess Reese and I sparred at the training center, as much to help me settle after the journey as any real training. I bested her easily, and at the time I thought she perhaps not seriously devoted to the study of the sword.. To see the progress that she has made, from then until tonight when she drew first blood with a worthy blow against the Sword of Velenosa. It is astounding to behold the improvement that her dedication and efforts have produced, especially in such short time. Her skill is not merely formidable, it is awe inspiring, and I fear that now I would barely provide a workout for her should we spar once again.

Relationship Note on Mirari

It is not often you find someone so comfortable in their own skin. This one asks a lot of questions and her aim is true; she must be trained to do so, seeking weakness in a conversation like a warrior does on the battlefield. I am not yet sure if it is less deadly a skill than swinging a blade, either.

Relationship Note on Eirlys

Aerlys? Eirlys...? That lady has some of the quickest ankles I have seen, and her reflexes are excellent. She claims to rely on other means than what I have trained to do and - I have little doubt - could wield her sword with the same effortless ease.

We must learn from her. I should make sure she joins our yard sessions.
