I got a new dress.
I bought it for the Redrain dinner.

It was nice, for the most part. But I guess I was a bit distracted with all the stuff going on and him back...

*Writing is a LITTLE better*
I (this is a very messy I) have lassens(scratched out) lessons at the academy (the spacing here indicates he had someone spelling out the word for him while he wrote it), to fix me(scratched out again) my writing. Thank you, Bianca.

*The rest seem to be practicing the alphabet*

Relationship Note on Artorius

Yesterday morning, in the stone garden - I met a man and his wonderful daughter. Together, we fed our horses sugar cubes, let them graze, and fed the winter birds.

He and his daughter made me laugh and smile. I could not imagine a better father figure. It's times like these when I miss my own father.

I see a lot of Serah, his daughter, in myself too.

I can't wait until the siege is over and we can find more things to do. Like horseback riding and chasing butterflies. It was minutes I spent with her - well, twice, but the Winter Rose, as she is most definitely called now - has stolen my heart. And I realized we fight this battle very little for ourselves, but for her. Specifically her, and specifically the other children of this Realm and I feel honored that Artorius would entrust her with me during the siege.

My plan is - the Menagerie. It probably won't be attacked right out, and if the battle lasts longer than usual, I have a supply of fresh meat and water. I'm going today to bury some provisions including camping gear and possibly set up a vantage point in the highest tree, for a lookout. If they get close I'll release some animals that have a somewhat defensible structure/compound/stable for us. I need to find an apothecary that can make smokeless fire or something. To keep us warm.

If this fails I will move us to the Velenosa or Grayson Estate on either side - depending on which side is more open. If that fails, and I am capable of getting there I will then go to Thrax. You know, hit Perrach up for that favor he totally owes me.

Serah - definitely love at first sight.

Relationship Note on Orathy

My bodyguard is an interesting man. Hard, rough, and will do almost anything for a few coins slipped into his palm. That is not to say he isn't a good man, he seems to be and has always treated me well. Orathy, the Bloody Honest, as I have taken to calling him. It is almost refreshing to be told an actual answer when a question is posed and not something said simply because it might be what I am looking to hear.

Hopefully he doesn't let me die.

I think the Feast for the Senses went well. The menu was expertly chosen, even if some of the dishes were easily thrown. At me.

The darkness of the room offered a cozy atmosphere, one in which I hoped would promote intimacy for such a delicate yet playful act as feeding your partner.

Felix was my escort again for this event, and I could not have asked for a more understanding date. He was not even upset when I had to leave him to deal with this or that and was a perfect gentleman. A host's duties come before any personal pleasure the event might hold.

Relationship Note on Clover

I can't believe Pickle's come to Arx! And a grown lady, too, though she's still knee high to a grasshopper. I met her over at the obstacle course at Telmar Tower, which admittedly did not seem to be quite her particular area of expertise, but she gave as good an effort as I've seen.

The lady has been my friend ever since I found her trying to teach my Da's sheep how to dance when she was just a little girl. It's a strange thing for a lady to be the friend of a farmboy, but she always had a kind word for me while I was a squire and learning to be a knight. I'm pleased to see her in person again -- though I confess, the city is a dangerous place to be these days. I only hope that her delightful spirit isn't dampened by these dark times.

Dear Diary,

Today, I made my sister blush. She also got married.

I made Legate Orazio -laugh-. Like a real person and everything.

I stunned Talen into silence for a whole heartbeat.

I made Leta drag me out of the Shrine of Limerance to save the others from my very appropriate questions.

Also, I wore a dress Esera would have liked.

It was a good day.

In my optimism, I like to think the words 'and then' preface the wonderful - like a ship coming in, like the return of a family member, like the messenger you weren't expecting. A fleet-footed transition that brings us from nowhere to everywhere, from nothing to everything.

Those two words hold the world in their hands, all promise.

And then the sun rose on another day ...

And then the siege ended ...

A toast to the groom,
To the bride.
From your sister,
Who's always by your side.
To your union,
And the hope that you provide.
May you always
Be satisfied.

I try not to put much down. Now where people could find it. But you know, sometimes it becomes a necessary evil.

It's not ours to have, is it?

It is beautiful. It would be moreso if its skin had not been sheared free to be replaced with a relief. But whoever did it clearly lacked parchment or stone-- and since coming from my first homes I've learned that records are something that create us as we go. We would be fewer without words. Without pictures. More than one thing can become a necessary evil over time. The culling of a spirit such as that one must have brought a toll-- but perhaps it still lives on in the emotions and heart poured into the sculpting on its flesh. The spirits of its causation bleeding into the story it has to tell to us now. I have seen art in the trees before, but never like this.

It must have some value to us, though. To have gotten it here. To have put it where we might see it. To have it where we might bring it home to see.

He wasn't wrong. Moving it past siege lines and trappings. It's here now. Nothing past that now, except 'why'.

It doesn't stop the shiver, though. That prickle when I was near it. Like gooseflesh but deeper, almost. Maybe I'm just anxious for this fight, closer by the day and watching some go on as if it will be over soon.

Relationship Note on Mae

Messengers in general have spoiled Arx rotten in their abilities to provide written and spoken words, swiftly and efficiently. They have the largest network by far, able to traverse to all areas and express the needs of those who entrust them. Mae is a perfect messenger.

We were always close to the same age growing up, but I think I found myself watching and tracking after the alley paths she carved rather than spending it by her side. She's resourceful, witty, and her very presence in the room grants it life and encourages others to seek her out. There's something about her fond kisses on the cheek, those invading embraces and the openness of her too-bold face which lures you in. I'm terribly protective of her, but I know that I don't need to be. She's definitely capable of handling herself.

Many of us are serious far too often, but there's been an excess of good reasons to be just that in the past years and those weights carried by many are constant reminder.

Princess Jaenelle's event invited one to look at a lighter side of life, to use senses not typically employed when we judge, and perhaps trust those you might not initially seek to. It was perfect, really, and I'm quite thankful I was able to have the opportunity to attend.

Lord Franco escorted me, and while the cost of such will forever stain his memories, it was an experience not easily forgotten. He was quite perfect, really.

But well, we can be thankful for the little things.

Thankful there was no olives.
Thankful there was no incidents.
Thankful we had spoons instead of knives.
Thankful jokes can be forgiven.

Every single choice we make has an impact on the world around us, big and small, mostly in ways we never would have imagined. Even in ways no one could ever fathom without knowing the whole story. We are free to make those choices, they are fiercely ours, but we cannot control how other people react. That is their choice, too. Some things can't be taken back or undone. It's up to us to accept the consequences that go with our actions, for better or for worse.

It can be a terrible feeling to realize just who you are. The worst thing you can do is drag someone down with you, depriving them of that choice to move forward. And sometimes, in order to protect the people you care about and hold onto what you have left, you may have to take measures to protect yourself as well. Turns out walls are easier to build than to tear down.
