Now that the warmth from the whiskey and the fire have both died down, and I peer over the edge of the rooftop to the dockyard below.. perhaps a contest to see who could jump over the bonfire on the roof wasn't the best of ideas. But I did get to see a man almost fly.

Relationship Note on Pasquale

I've only had the opportunity of a handful of encounters with the Lord Pasquale, and most have been due to business. And yet, from the moment we met, I could readily see why he's risen to Voice for the Marquessa Lianne. A steady head, an easy and amiable personality, yet to the point in matters. For any who might seek to strengthen ties with the growing trading port that Nilanza is becoming, I cannot help but recommend people seek him out.

I picked up one of the copper pins everyone is raving about these days as the must-have fashion accessory in these perilous times. Of course, I was a bit shocked to see that they were offered without cost. While I'm of course impressed with the selflessness of such an act by a clearly talented smith (the piece is simple but exquisite) I should try to find out if there is a fund or charity of some sort set up to support the current efforts to bolster Arvum's hope and harmony.

I usually try to do what is right.

Most of the time I'm not totally sure what the right thing to do is, so I really hope that people treat me with forebearance and forgive when I do it wrong.

I've dreamed a dream far-flung, but with no roads.

And no roads is a travesty. So with the harbor currently occupied by boats that don't paint the friendliest of pictures, it occurs to me that while trade over the southern seas is profitable and expedient, putting all of our eggs into one brine-laced basket isn't the best thing for the delicate balance of the market. I'll be seeking out those with a head for trade, travel, and thinking outside of the established lines, so to speak. Neither man nor monsters (nor great hulking behemoth ships) should ever stand in the way of trade, whatever road we may need to pave.

Enough people have asked by now that I might as well. The answer is that I don't know. I absolutely do not know. I'm willing to talk about it, plan about it, whatever, but I do not have a single fucking idea that makes any kind of sense. So you can keep asking, if you feel like, but it probably won't get you anywhere.

It isn't a misunderstanding I see a benefit to anyone in dwelling upon, but I appreciate your offer of advice.

I have given my apology and retraction and will be leaving it at that unless asked to do differently by the offended party.

I was one of the many public voices concerning the Telmar-Bliss event. Considering that it has come to its close, it would be remiss of me not to make a final statement as well. When I made my thoughts known, there were those who questioned why I, or House Mazetti, should have any such opinions when we were not directly involved. My answer in private was this: because the response from House Telmar involves everyone. My belief was that their choice could effect both commoners and the Peerage, even if indirectly, and even if it took years.

I do not believe I was wrong to hold that view. Before us is an Assembly of Peers during which we will host the representatives of two foreign powers, each wildly different from us. We cannot yet know what their arrival will portend for us, but what we can say is that in spite of that, and in spite of the many hardships and travails we have faced in the past years, House Telmar reinforced their word, their honor, and the ideals the Faith teaches to value and uphold. Whether one is a noble lord or or a humble cobbler, you can look to House Telmar and know that they will endeavor to do the right thing, no matter that is difficult or unwelcome.

I would have taken the same stance were it a different House; were it someone other than Bliss. If one cannot understand how what was in question was and is important to us as a society, then I am uncertain how else to explain it. Ultimately, however, it ended positively, and I am glad to see it done.

Compassion is the hardest thing. It is endlessly personal, forever changing to suit each individual. It is by turns loving, and gentle, and impossibly strong. It is the thing that keeps me going when I want to quit. It is putting one foot ahead of the other, it is an endless barrage of questions from people who care nothing for asking things that leave my heart bare, but answering anyway because it helps them on their path. It is endless misunderstandings when I try to protect people, but protecting them anyway. It is people asking me for advice and getting mad, and me still giving them advice the next time they ask, even though I know they'll just get mad again. It is knowing that I'll have to stand against people I love for the sake of innocents I don't know and never will. It is caring for people who could know me but don't, for people who could care but don't, for people who think they care but never truly think beyond themselves.

It is the hardest thing I've ever done.

There was a story once that a friend told me - of a ruler who had a general who was very successful, who won many battles. And when the war was done they sat at a celebratory dinner and the ruler asked the general what he thought of the virtue of compassion. The general replied that it was a weakness, and sneered at anyone who thought differently. And the ruler ordered him killed on the spot. For he himself was not a compassionate man, but the woman he loved was and he would hear no word against her.

I was horrified to hear that story the first time I heard it. But now I think I understand better.

I ran across an acquaintance yesterday at the Shrine of Limerance. It had been some time since I'd seen him, but it was very nice to speak with him again for however briefly. He told me that he had plans to rebuild the clocktower, and I wish him luck in that effort. For my part, I took the copper twist pin off my own cloak and handed it to him, telling him about my campaign to get everyone to wear some copper. I hope he will wear it. Honestly, I hope everyone will wear one.

The response to the idea that Dame Ida and I had to get everyone to wear a bit of copper has been overwhelmingly positive. I have been amazed at all the people who want to get involved. We aren't done, not by a long shot, but it's so nice to go out in the streets and see that flash of metal around someone's neck or pinned to their shirt or cloak. I want people to focus on the positive, to stick together in times of trouble, and the best way to do that is by example. And isn't Copper the best example of all?
