I don't know if I am cut out for what is coming. I feel I've made some mistakes recently that are irreversible. What is coming seems too much. I have friends who are much better suited to this. I admire each of them and their efforts and feel I must stay to see this out.

At least there's the ball, hopefully.

This is not how I thought my story would go. -Our- story, would go. But ... so it is. Let's see what happens down this path. I can't lie; I'm beyond excited. What a strange place to be!

It feels like the season slipped through my fingers like water. So many weeks, months really, spent with my head down and singularly focused on preparations has resulted in gardens properly turned over and ready for winter, salves and other medicines stocked within the hospital, and ensuring that lthe tower here in the city is ready for winter. I also took some time to get back to Saikland for a much needed visit. While it was wonderful to see my nieces and nephews and other family members, and dig my hands into the dirt of our beloved vineyards, and be among my people to hear their concerns, I am glad to be back in the city in time for the year end celebrations.

Longest Night was spent at the Shrine of Lagoma, as much of it as I could around tending to some needs at the hospital. It was a bittersweet night, not being able to spend time with Mariska for her birthday. I know that she and her siblings are safe and healthy and likely enjoying themselves just fine at Eswynd Rock, but it still makes my heart ache to be apart from them for so long. It does seem that there will be some holiday diversions to aid in distracting me and lifting my spirit, though! General Kennex has set a lively event for later in the day. Perhaps I should organize something, too.

I dreamt of laughter in the halls again, and the clattering of feed running amongst them. But when I searched for the sounds there was nothing and no one. The house was still and silent... like it always is.

I have returned to the city and it seems none too soon. A plan must be made to defend my city and Bella's family. I still remember the horrors of Bastion. How can we prepare?

I suppose since I raised the banners I'd better do something with the army or they might get bored. Ought to be interesting.

Pasquale thinks I am being a martyr to blame myself for the grave injury to the man I owe so much to. Maybe he's right but it was my idea and I lead the charge. Who else is there to blame?

It is a strange thing, I find, when someone with whom I wished to make contact but who did not respond sends to me, out of the blue and some years later, calling me a kinsman. I find it hard to trust in such circumstances, as I think any man would.

My sister in law is officially voice for Ravenseye. Thank the Spirits, scholar! I know I talk lots, but I can only talk so much. I think she can keep better track of all the things. I mean, I WAS gone for awhile. Why you looking at me like that? Yeah, I'm going again for a bit. But for good REASON!

My impatience to have a matter concluded has cost the lives of men and women who trusted me with their lives. My desire to have a matter concluded so that I could focus on the matters that menace the city has made me short sighted and my shit planning and impatience has nearly cost Kennex the life of it's sword and my dearest cousin. Even the weight of it, the way I burn to pay penance is selfish. I have failed my house, my soldiers, and my family.

Some years ago, in one of my first voyages on the open sea, a storm appeared before our ship. The crew together had lifetimes of experience, and the ship was well built to weather such storms. We stayed our course, unaware of the approaching danger.

As the stormclouds unfurled, the fury of the gathering storm finally became apparent. The winds whipped the vessel, and the waves grew taller and darker with each passing moment. If any of them slammed into our broadside, the ship would tip over and capsize. We had no choice but to point the ship into the waves, and dive straight into the storm.

Like a single squadron as it charges toward an opposing army, engulfed by superior numbers and assaulted from every side, yet miraculously endures, blessed with Gloria's favor as the enemy ranks surge forward, unable to break the resolve of the warriors with nothing to lose — so our ship crested wave after monstrous wave, vying against powers beyond our control or understanding. Finally the winds receded, the seas grew calm, the skies turned clear. We met Mangata's test, and we survived.

Though the crew's actions were unquestionably heroic, no glory could be won that day. Only life or death. We trusted the ship, and we trusted ourselves. It was our best and our only chance.

Thank you, scholar. May wisdom light our path.

Been a while, eh, Scholar -- I come and I go, just the eccentric Shepherd Duke and his dogs. Honest, I'd much prefer to be back at the Peak with the pack, with my family, but responsibilities require response. The banners were called to Grayson, and as one ever faithful to the Compact and her people, I respond -- with all the forces of Graypeak. We are ready to defend. We are ready to protect. We are ready to offer succor and sanctuary. There's a reason why Boofus the Bold is the sigil of our house.

There are none more true.

Saik Tower is the highest structure in the Lycene District. We have offered its uppermost floor to serve as a watchtower, sending up plumes of colored smoke, bell alarms should there be dangers. Space for Velenosa guardsmen that supplement our own guards and food for them is provided as well as a guestroom so shifts can sleep or rest.

I was able to have a greenhouse nestled into the gardens at Saik Tower. I am hoping before the end of summer - coming far too soon for my liking - to have the gardens at the Sanctuary and Tower both fully harvested and prepared for the cooler weather to come. There is so much of value within those gardens for making medicines and tonics. I hope I have time.

There is also much to do at the hospital's medicinal gardens. I am looking forward to the open house! It will be a lovely time for anyone interested in learning the healing arts to learn more about what the Physicians Guild does, and we welcome anyone with an earnest interest to join us.

Dear Diary the Second,

I have sat, and I have wondered
What this city has left to plunder,
What grand depths yet remain,
Or secrets our enemies should hope to gain
Through vain and violent revolution?

As though their victory is some foregone conclusion,
As though surrender is the only solution,
As they steal, like thieves, through our shadows' long
And woeful cast, our war-worn hearts, and worries wrong,
Blind to or negligent of our keen and ready blades.

Dear Diary,

That's your name now, Scholar, a reminder: Listen, don't speak.

There are those whom have come to me, asking the aid of Ischia in whatever is to come, and I have lent it.

There are those whom have come to me and begged my counsel in matters personal and political, and freely I have given of myself to soothe their sorrows and guide their hand -- such is my way.

I am, after all, a most benevolent soul.

Generous, kind, humble...

... When I say don't speak, Diary, it extends to your expressions.

Just write.

You would think I should be elated by the happenings in the worl-- ... what did I just say?!
