Existing in this city:

Act like you belong there
And no one asks.

Cobwebbed places are opportunities.
Emptiness can fill emptiness.

Relationship Note on Cufre

The newest slate of the Commoners' Council has been announced, and I am impressed by the names!

There have been several pages of my whites dedicated to Cufre Harrow - for good reason. While it may be fair to accuse me of bias, as she is my protege, I assure the readers that she has earned every bit of praise I heap upon her. She is kind, conscientious, thorough, pious, creative, and just generally good company. I have no doubt that she will be an upstanding and capable voice for the people of the city. It is a joy to see her step into this new role, and I look forward to being an available resource to her - and the rest of the council - should support ever be wished for.

I have only previously met Messeres Publius and Nygard briefly, but their reputations suggest they will be valuable additions to the council. Caspian Wild and Raja Culler are both better known to me, and I am nearly as happy for their place on the council as I am for Cufre's - both are figures I have placed my trust in in the past and would do so again in the future.

May the gods guide them and smile upon all the people of Arx that they now serve.

The title cloaked me in a mantle of power and isolation. There was a transformation of myself from an observer of courtly intrigues to a key player in the most perilous games of the Lyceum. Completely aside from every other ambitious courtier having a target on my back, were the risks inherent in answering up to the other House ministers and the Duke himself. Whatever I thought of the courtiers and court, there was a whole elevated society with its own machinations. Here in this strata, what they lacked in cleverness and innuendo was made up for in power and raw influence.

The corridors of power, I learned, are not lined with gold but with shadows, and secrets. And with those came a gnawing solitude. No doubt my methods well learned and drilled served me well, but of necessity, I had to detach my true self further and further from those with whom I spoke - as the speaking was oftener than not to be to their detriment.

As Minister, I was privy to the whispers that echoed through court. They carried tales of ambition, deceit and sometimes desperation. It was my charge to sift through them and separate the truth from the fiction, to protect the House from unseen threats that lurk in Setarco's glittering facade.

Frequently I remember pondering Belinha's teachings. Her voice echoed in my mind often. As a boy, I was always so quick to judge character. I brought this naivete with me into Belinha's social circle. After one particular evening, I gabbed about the new acquaintances met, and how (as I recall) I rather liked them. "Every face you meet is a mask, Duarte."

In the labyrinth of power of the Lyceum - and Setarco in particular - each step is a gamble and trust is a currency in short supply.

**This journal entry is simply a song, written in Arvani, Crownlands Shav'arvani, and Ravashari**

When chill and terror grip our hearts,
when all seems lost in darkness,
remember Hope, and sing her part,
a ray of Light, she harkens.

When moon rains red and stars go black,
when secrets unearthed do frighten,
with songs of Hope, win Freedom back,
and shackles shall be lightened.

Let the songs of Hope refrain
one Voice of Freedom's beacon,
What once was lost is now regained,
As Destiny's hold does weaken.

Let us not be ruled by fear,
Nor forbidden rites uncertain.
Remember Love and hold it dear,
This side of Life's bright curtain.

I had wondered if I should still hold a birthday celebration for Baroness Lucita, my sister, and myself, given how unsettled so many things are right now. But I have always believed that, especially in troubled times, we must hold to those things which make all of this worth it. Having this reinforced by someone I trust and admire was comforting. And it was truly heartwarming to have so many beloved guests visit us and celebrate with us. I was reminded that I have become someone that others look to in these moments, that I, too, am a source of comfort. Gods willing, I will always be so.

And by the grace of Limerance, it is not just birthdays that we have had to celebrate! Though important - for we should all be so blessed with the chance to keep learning and loving in these lives we have, Saik and Byrne have recently brokered an alliance that reinforces the ties between the Lyceum and Crownlands. My cousin, Filip, has gone on to find his most perfect match in Countess Lyra. We are proud to see him embrace the role of count-consort of Cedar Vale. I, personally, am looking forward to visiting them again when the winter has passed. However, as Voice of Saik, it was my honor to act on Lucita's behalf to negotiate this union beyond my personal interests. The people of Saikland Greens and Cedar Vale will see benefits for generations to come through increased trade and the sharing of knowledge. This is an exciting and wonderful step forward for all.

There is so much that weighs upon us, so many fears to face and challenges to overcome. I promise you, whomever you are reading this, that there are good and sweet and lovely things worth holding onto. In these confusing and dark times, there is light to guide you through. It may be in the smile of the one who makes your heart swell with fondness, it may be in the company of people who brave the snow for you, it may be in the places you tell yourself you cannot find it for any number of fearful reasons. Find the light. If you cannot find it? Be it.

Relationship Note on Medeia

Today was Lady Medeia's birthday party, and my, oh my, the decorations were nothing short of glorious. The music chamber was adorned in a rustic fashion which carried the charm of Saikland Greens. The ambiance was exquisite, a testament to the impeccable taste of Lady Medeia and her penchant for extravagance.

While it was a party held by Saik for the trio of birthdays, to twins Medeia and Neilda, and their Baroness Lucita. There was a marvelous moment when two small family reunions were able to take place. That is the warmth which we need more of these days, to be able to see those we call our family and share some cheer with them.

Sometimes, it's the simplicity of being with loved ones, even if only for a fleeting moment, that adds true richness to our lives.

Journal

Please forgive the near six-year absence from the continuance of my memoirs. The life of a hermit seemed to suit me as I struggled with a rather severe theological conundrum that drove me to the brink. Is it resolved? No. But at least I can venture beyond my chamber walls to the archives again. Yes, I could've sent my submissions via messenger. Alas, I hadn't the will to write them.

But now we continue...

-------------

The threat of being implicated in a scandal surrounding the Minister of Production's son weighed heavily on me. My intuition, sharpened by years of navigating the treacherous undercurrents of Setarco’s society, suggested that if I didn't take immediate action, I could very well become the scapegoat in this elaborate game of power and subterfuge.

I realized that my time spent in obscurity at court, my careful observation, and the unassuming persona I had cultivated might finally serve a grander purpose. The opportunity to demonstrate my value to House Pravus, beyond simply making people feel important, was also presenting itself.

I sought an audience with Duke Piero, a move that was bold, given my relatively low position. But the urgency of the situation demanded it. I revealed my discoveries about the Minister of Production's son, the premeditated nature of his downfall, and the potential defection of the Minister himself. My insights were met with heavy skepticism. After all, I wasn't the first thirsty courtier who sought to undermine well-established persons of power for their own elevation and benefit. But the earnestness in my delivery and the evidence I provided were compelling.

The Duke, perhaps sensing an opportunity to avert a crisis within his House, tasked me to gather definitive proof of the Minister's planned defection and, if possible, to uncover the identities of any other co-conspirators. This task required a delicate balance of stealth, persuasion, and a keen understanding of the complex social dynamics at play.

I thus embarked on a series of clandestine meetings, leveraging the relationships I had formed as the "courtly courier" and my newfound reputation at court. I navigated through whispers and half-truths, piecing together a puzzle that was as dangerous as it was intricate.

In a turn of fate, it was during one of these meetings that I stumbled upon information regarding Belinha. The revelation was unexpected and came from a source I had not anticipated. The truth of her disappearance, which had haunted me for years, was now in my grasp. It was a bittersweet moment, one that brought closure but also a deep sense of loss. The details of her fate would forever alter my perception of the city I thought I knew so well.

But I had little time to dwell on these personal revelations. The success of my mission for Duke Piero was paramount. My efforts paid off. I not only exposed the Minister's treachery but also uncovered a network of corruption that ran deeper than suspected. A potential disaster for House Pravus was averted. In doing so, I solidified my position within the House. After delivering up a few more would-be traitors, I was named Minister of Information and Safety (a title a bit too forward... it didn't make my job easier.)

I dreamt I fought a monster cobbled together by hundreds of bodies. It had too many arms, an uneven number of legs. It had two heads. It was a hewn together sack of meat and gristle. I fought it with a ferocious delight. Intent upon cutting away at the monstrosity. I dreamt of laughter all around me as I hacked and slashed. I laughed as the creature crushed me beneath its feet until the weight of it cut of my air. I woke gasping, with that invisible weight still on my chest.

I dreamt of a queen with ice-white hair, sitting upon an obsidian throne. Her eyes shone like ruby fire and her smile as was cruel as a rose's thorn. I knelt before her throne and she placed a frigid hand upon my head. She froze my to my core so ever my screams were icicles upon my lips.

Singing songs to calm, reassure, offer hope and then tell stories to remind people how capable and strong they are, how they endure and learn has been fulfilling. Yet, it is requiring honey-lemon tea and some herbs to help keep the voice from becoming strained. So much tea, so very much tea. Shhhh, I'm being quiet and just writing, resting the voice for a little while before heading out once again.

I am unfamiliar with so much about what makes us.

On the surface, I wonder if the composition of our bloody humors are similar to that of sea water -- it would make so much sense -- why my head and my heart keep getting pulled to the beaches, eye on that horizon.

I await spring.

I had worried, after spending so long away, Arx would not feel like home anymore. Then, this week, I have reveled in how one dearest to me has changed, exchanged jabs with my oldest friend, cried (just a little) with my brighter half, received the single best hug in all of Arvum and filled my parlor with poetry. I've found myself a new adventure and engaged in proper mischief with my preferred partner in crime.

None of this is why I returned--I am very much here because there is work to be done--yet this is why I am glad to be here.

This is what makes Arx home.

I never thought a poetry reading would actually be interesting. I didn't expect most to write their own poetry. I cannot fathom being such a wordsmith and admire those with such a skill. It is strange for me to be the odd one out and my sex to have nothing to do with it.

Relationship Note on Raven

When your own native language fails, I recommend turning to the languages of others.

Given your parameters, the first word that comes to mind is one which I learned from a particular tribe of Crownlands shav'arvani. Were I to translate even its rough meaning into common Arvani, the description would be quite graphic, more than a bit medical, involve at least two other vulgarities, and be ENTIRELY unfit for print in public journals.

Learning languages is only dull when you study them in dusty libraries and never actually apply them out in the world.

Even as some move to tear apart the Compact, we continue to build it stronger. We forge the alliances that create a unity that is not mindless, not bent to the will of one who does not care for our individual aptitudes and desires. The Compact is worth protecting, we are all worth saving, and I am so glad to have found like minds in all fealties. I am especially glad to have long ago made acquaintance with Countess Lyra Byrne. More to come, but I so look forward to the future.

Last night was a delight. I cannot say how happy I am. To spend an evening in good cheer and conversation with his Grace Archduke Patrizio and Princess Renata of Pravus, Lady Medeia of Saik and my dearest cousin, Theo, has kept me smiling long after.

I look forward to many more such merry meetings and cannot think of better company to chat and conspire with.

More excellent news this week. The Princess Renata of Pravus has elected to join the Golden Hart and will be hosting a wonderful event in the coming days along side his Grace, Archduke Patrizio, and my wonderful cousin, Prince Theo.

I'm excited to see what they devise and hope for nothing but their success. My Hart stands fully behind their efforts to help others and my staff are at the ready to assist in any way possible.

I think some very wonderful things that will come of this high-spirited and good-hearted trio. I feel so blessed.

Dearest Diary,

Red.

Orange.

Gold.

Black.

Fire, smoke, and ash ...

Blood, sand, and silence...

Tch.

There's a story here somewhere.

A tale to be told in fabric, in hides, in feathers, gems and ink ...

It begins once upon a time, and ends beyond a sun-stricken horizon -- a dream, a nightmare, one in the same.

It's the middle that eludes me, really.

Who is the hero?

Who is the villain?

The nature of hope, versus the gravity of despair?

No.

NO!

That is a story that has been told, again and again...

I'm better than that.

... you know, you're remarkably unhelpful.
