I will note that this is penned as the priest is laughing at me. But here is my recount of today's expedition with the Knight of the Order of the Fluffybottoms and the Blackwhisker Pirates. In rhyme.

How does one greet a stoat,
A knightly fellow in a waistcoat,
Knee high and with a stately grace,
And a monocle resting on his face.

Board the raft and off we go,
A simple trip no too and fro,
A larger ship, from raft we hail,
With otter pirates we set sail,

Rough seas come and pitch the ship,
Pulls the rudder and yawns the slip,
Victus tumbles from the nest,
A broken nose bloods his vest,

Three pirates lost the captain barks,
To much dismay made chums with sharks,
A yell goes out to hold on tight,
Until at last the ship is right.

A little further, a landing reach,
Heralds danger upon the beach,
Tidal things, where are they from,
The Abyss, says the Knight with glum,

Victus has his fight at last,
While Titania tries to shoot his ass,
Some wounds are had the fight is done,
Victus is content we won,

A sullied grove, an oily layer,
Clean the grove in furry prayer,
Life returns and blooms once more,
For the Stag King, Petrichor.

Relationship Note on Valery

Quiet as a mouse this one, and seems shy and almost afraid to speak up. But she listens well and she catches everything - she's sharp. And motivated. Loyal, and tries very hard to do the right things. That's always a bonus, in times like these. Overall, I like her.

Relationship Note on Ailith

The Palace Seraph, she seems like a fairly sweet person. She has offered to be a confidant, but I really have nothing to confide. In any case, she seems concerned for the state of our new recruits as well as our seasoned Swords. Having arranged for services for them with Sir Rymarr previously, I saw no need to change those orders. I wonder what lies deeper than the sweetness under the surface.

No, wait - I know. She has a mouth on her, that one, and uses it when she's tired and mad in training. She asked to start working with some of our squires, to work on stamina and do something physical. I joined the morning exercises as I often do, and was more than a little amused by her hmmm - accompaniment? She didn't quit though, and that says a lot of her strength of character. I hope the soak does her well, and if she doesn't apologize I'm not going to hold that against her.

For the record though? I did warn her.

I retract all praise about the Lord Commander. She /is/ trying to kill me.

Two days and I'm still discovering places I thought couldn't ache. The short trip down the hall was pure agony. This burn, it's felt. And no amount of mews and snarls won't change the fact that I asked for this punishment.

Maybe after a soak, I'll apologize to her.

/Maybe/.

A surprising number of people seem to want to come train with the King's Own, from the very noble to those who serve the very noble, to even some members of the Faith. I wonder if Lady Aislin's been telling tales. In any case I'm allowing it upon consideration of each request - it's good for our hopeful recruits to see what their competition will be, and it's good to remind people that the King's Own are people too. It's easy to think of us as automatons who simply guard the King, but these Knights who have sworn their lives to the King's Service are so much more than that. They deserve a chance to be remembered as people. Untouchable heroes of old are inspiring in what they do. But I also believe that the ordinary woman, with her quirks and foibles known to those close and still choosing to be exceptional is just as inspiring. I'm sure that our heroes of old had quirks. I know that they were people, and had weak moments. But those are lost to time and legend, and so now this new generation of the Hundred must learn that they will still be human even when I call upon them to do extraordinary things and become legends themselves.

Few of the Hundred die in bed of old age. But while they live, let them LIVE - and let them be as prepared as I can make them, while still remembering the things that make them unique.

I was right there with you swallowing my body weight in sea water with my leg cramping. We didn't drown, I consider that a success.

*A shakey sketch of a man holding his arm out. Flying above the man is what appears to be a great horned owl. It's hard to tell if the man has just sent the owl off, or is trying to get the owl to land upon his arm.*

*A shaky sketch of an empty bench, flanked by rose bushes. Done with rough, simple strokes of the charcaol. The details on the roses is not expert and a little bit fuzzy but done well enough to make out the flowers. A set of boots sits next to the bench, half hidden by the rose bush.*

I made a rather good showing in the Iron Guard Pentathlon swimming competition, I think. I took the silver medal for second place, coming in behind only Princess Reese. If I had to take less than first, I'm pleased Grayson won the top spot. That woman swims like a fish! Dame Alexis Wyrmfang did Valardin credit, earning third. All in all, it was a fine, spirited competition from the men and women of Redrain, Velenosa, Valardin and Grayson. I am proud to have taken part. For kin and honor, and all thanks to the Iron Guard for providing us a field on which to excel.

So I swam in a race today. How did it go? In a word, I sucked.

Only can get better. Cause if I got worse? I'd drown.

I suspect the perpetually harried air my brother-in-law shows the world is, to an extent, a facade to protect himself from the weight of expectation. But he has shouldered every burden his sister and I have placed upon his shoulders.

The integration of my Greenwoods into House Riven was a challenge, but the steadfast service Dame Esoka has given to our house has been crucial in sustaining the alliance made all those years ago. Whatever lingering doubts she may have about her own measure, she has my full confidence. Now she must earn her own.

Living in a city is hard. Why aren't there more trees? Living so close together with so many people would drive anyone mad. I am convinced this is why so many journals are so confusing. Not enough time under the trees.

Relationship Note on Lydia

Lydia has returned from Stonedeep. It was good to see her today and to sit and talk. We are the only two left from our immediate family.

Though she is feeling the pressures keenly, I think she will make an excellent Duchess, one that is perhaps better suited to the collaboration and compromise that is necessary for the Compact's continued survival than we have had in generations. There is a lot of work to be done, but I know she is up to the task.

Speaking of which, Nightgold needs an heir...
