The math jokes. The live octopus. The vomiting. Victus's cat. Dinner with the Thrax household is not dull.

I disagree, and know that I have reason to be keenly focused. However, we all have our own reasons for carrying the banner forth.

And such things can sometimes be rather pleasant.

I'm pretty sure who you've been seeing around that looks like me in your wig is actually your long lost twin, my lord. Can you not see the resemblance?

Although many people prefer to dictate journals to Scholars, I have always preferred to pen my own words, at least in the Whites. Not because the Scholars do not do a wonderful job at their work, but because I like to travel to various places in the city to write my journal entries. Often, I write them at the Queensrest, usually with a pot of tea or glass or wine at hand. Many times, I will write at Judgment Green near where the proclaimers and speakers can be found. I enjoy listening to the debates of the day as I write.

Today, I am at the walkways at the top of the Seawatch South walls, bracing the journal against the stone and rather awkwardly juggling pen and ink. The walkways are not too busy today; a late winter day, overcast, with a cutting wind from the sea is not typically a pleasant time to be atop walls. But I am enjoying it. The wind claws at worries, fears, and irritations, scouring them away even as it chills me to the bone. Below and beyond me, I can see the Lowers laid out, and beyond that, the grey, choppy sea itself. Sea birds float over the masts of ships; a large volume of ships, more than usual, I think. And no wonder, considering the times. It's beautiful, in a cold and removed sort of way - like a sculpture of crystal, protected behind glass because it is too fragile to ever touch.

I think it's safe to say that less distraction and more focus in the days ahead, at least with what's important, is probably the wiser course of action.

That being said, I don't think focus will come easily.

I was discussing a matter with a stranger last evening when our discussion turned to the upcoming war and the crusade of black tides.

At what point in time have mortals decided that it is appropriate to treat their opponents in battle with dishonor? To act infantile and disrespectful towards beings that wield awesome powers? Evil, yes. At odds with the entire pantheon? Of course. But as much as these things have made your suffering, does not what it stands for help define its reflection? Without them, is it possible to define what is good, right and aspirational? No. And yet discussion happens whereby individuals boast and make promises to take the heads of this thing or that thing, not understanding that their righteous zeal is a thin coating over a darker passion they're being chained by; hubris, selfishness, ego, pride. The very things they seek to destroy are the things within them that grows. That thing you wish to sever its head as you desire to send it to oblivion, you don't recognize that you are setting up the cost and consequence as something far worse will come to replace what you took. You are mortal, human. Mortal, meant to live through suffering and good times, learn and record and inspire greatness so that the world can be made better rather than your actions spurring more from the Abyss.

Gloria, goddess of battle and war. Of chivalry and honor. Gloria desires us in battle and war not to act dishonorable and this means treating your opponents with a measure of respect. She desires not for outright obliteration but to minimize total war with the goal of how we plan and prepare for peace and healing.

Worship not the Abyss, seek not it out. Look hard within your heart and question the root of your desires. In this holy war, let not your actions and words bring dishonor but instead may future generations remember that as a champion of the gods, you upheld their ideals.

Relationship Note on Samael

I wish to take a moment to acknowledge in my whites, Lord Samael Bisland. I engaged in discourse with him, curious about something he has publicly stated. We sent messengers back and forth and while others might have taken offense, had escalated and gotten themselves into a heated discord, he was civil, saw the facts for what they were and then apologized. Privately and publicly. He is the example that many should live by when it comes to living our lives day to day. To keep an open mind and not be afraid to admit when they perhaps, less than right.

I look forward whole heartedly, to sharing an afternoon of tea with him in the future and to see how the relationship between the Bisland Navy and his Grace, the Prince of Maelstrom can grow and flourish. Perhaps both can learn from one another. Thank you Lord Bisland.

After initial misgivings I humbly ask for your forgiveness in my voicing doubt upon your appointment. I have come around and I now stand corrected. I am sure you and House Thrax have the best interests of the Compact in mind and I am sure every honorable Bisland sailor will follow your every order. I trust the appointment by my King and am ready to stand united.

Your Humble Servant,

Watching a crow drag pants through the window and drop them on my lap with all the fuss and irritation a bird can display has probably been the highlight of my week.

While I may not be on a ship going to battle -- and while Ashford may not have many ships to begin with -- if any men under my banners do not follow their leader's order, no matter whom that leader may be -- they will soon find that they are disobeying not only their leader, but their Duke.

That will not stand. Ashfords know their duty. Ashford supports the Compact -- all of it.

Relationship Note on Victus

You were voted in by the High Lords and approved by the King. As a Voice, I echo my Archduchess' commendation. Furthermore, I personally recognise you as the perfect person for this role, with all the burdens it entails.

Anyone who says otherwise and thus disagrees with the Grand Duchess of the Lyceum will know my wrath. A punch to the mouth might silence that dissent in a time where we can't have any.

Sail under the High Admiral and do it without disquiet. This is war. None of it is pleasant. Nothing will be to all our liking.

It's understandable that there are folks who aren't gonna be cozy taking orders from someone not of your house, who hasn't lived in your lands and been a companion to your people. Worse still if they're a Thrax given that history of bloodshed, eh? Those who are weary or having trouble squaring away their belief in the future, I'd invite them to think on it a different way.

This war with Marin stopped being about Thrax when he nailed an ultimatum to our doorstep. Then he targeted the Lyceum and the North too, but it ain't about them either. He picked the targets but the words were very clear to anyone listening, the Compact is what's in danger. This Compact has faced a Herald before and scrapped the edges of several others in the meantime. Anyone who has been on front lines, back lines, or just lent an ear to the story knows exactly what they're after. They will kill, what they don't destroy they will taint, and they won't give a damn who's banner they step over to do it.

There's a man of the faith by the name of Driskell who gives sermons in the Cathedral from time to time. Before he was godsworn, I called him my crew-mate way before I wore the High Lord's mantle. Something he said recently should resonate with the lot of you and I feel like repeating it. What we have that the enemy we face sorely lacks is something called the light of hope, coupled with the unwavering faith in the gods and the lieges we have that are sworn by ancient oaths to protect the Compact's people.

Everyone who -leads- under the Compact's banner today carries that same oath, and it's up to those who will follow to keep that light of hope burning bright. Seriously, go to Driskell's sermons. That guy can talk a lot.

My point is that if you have doubts, that's fine. But the one thing you damn well should never be doubting is that there won't be people left when we're gone. That's what we're fighting for. If you have reservations about listening to someone who don't bend to your banners, I can understand that. But when we're out on the waves and staring down the enemy, it won't be a Serpent vs Marin, it won't be a Griffon vs Marin, it won't be a Dragon, a Fox, or a Bear either. It'll be Person vs Monster.

I'll carry Thrax's standard till I'm dead and wrapped it in, but I'm not in this fight for Thrax alone. I'm out there fighting for Arvum and so will all of you who take up arms and armor to protect it. If we can share anything in common, it's that we're Arvani, and we're here to protect our home till the bitter end.

This is our fight.

What good is the law or even morality when people can walk around flaunting one or the other or both?
