I'm told I offended someone.

This isn't the first time, it won't be the last time and I won't offer an apology for something I didn't do.

Let's be honest..

I wouldn't offer an apology for something I did do. We act, we speak, we are. Don't apologize for being yourself.

Things to do:

1 - Project cloths line - Killing enemies and looking good while doing it
2 - Drinks with Mother Nature - Learning more about Petrichor and how to help
2.5 - Acquire an adorable baby cougar friend - Not sure the guard dogs will be down with this
3 - Monsters need to die - The soul eaters got to go, they're gross.
3.5 - Finalize the Fearless roster - it's going to be important to getting this done
4 - Celebrate! - If we live through everything above there's got to be a party, and a new dress, probably jewelry too. Let's be real. Definitely jewelry too. And the King will probably need some new clothes too.
5 - First Children Outreach - Found 'em once, can do it again, especially when the soul eaters are gone
6 - Convince the Keaton's to help with project Doom Groom - If they could only see that the swearing and the fighting and the drinking and the stabbing... those are some of his best qualities!
7 - Fabulous! - Everything's happy again and back to bouncing around the city merrily.

I have returned, and I've found my companions to be at turns amusing and melancholy, as was to be expected. I look forward to guzzling a lot of ale and getting my ass kicked. (A lot of the latter; I am rustier than an ancient spoon recovered from the sea.)

A while back I announced I was going to be researching the history of slavery in Arx. People have felt attacked by this, on both sides. Those who support the practice of Thralldom don't want to speak for fear I'll twist their words. Those opposed seem to fear I'll in some way justify the continuation of the same practice.

In the words of great scholar: A land that has forgotten its past is doomed to repeat its mistakes.

I've only sought to secure an accurate historical account. People fear to lose more than they fear ignorance. I've not given up, but this isn't going to happen fast.

Meditation. We're encouraged to do it at shrines, in prayer, and elsewhere for guidance. Yet I have been unable to find any texts that provide guidance to people on meditation itself. I wonder if there are any out there I'm just missing.

I've had multiple people come to me letting me know that my, well, resolve stands out. My ability to stick to my decisions and push forward. My lessons always come back to the meditation. I see it as a foundation, and the rest just sort of comes from there.

I'm still a mediocre writer, but I'm going to try to pen another book on meditation. I don't think my perspective is enough. I'll need to find other people and include the ways they meditate.

It has been some weeks since my week of meditation at the Silent Reflections in the Shrine of the Thirteenth. I confess that the experience did not, perhaps, have the level of impact upon me that I feel it ought to have, and I shall surely be returning in the coming days to revisit my experience in the hopes that I may understand it better.

For those who do not know, members of the Scholars are asked to perform this homage to better understand the importance of our vows and the consequences. The Silent Reflects are those who have taken such important oaths and broken them, thus requiring them to suffer the loss of their tongue and writing hand.

For my part, I found it impossible to understand how such vows could be voluntarily undertaken and then voluntarily broken, even without the threat of such a penalty hanging over our heads. Was it stupidity that made them do such an unfathomable thing? Can greed truly be such a powerful motivator?
It’s for the best I waited to put these thoughts to paper, as a recent discussion in the whites helped me to understand how such actions could occur.

I preface this by saying that I am in no way advocating such, or any, punishments for those involved in this. I only use the example to draw a few small parallels, which helped me to comprehend the Silent Reflections more completely.

In recent days, a most esteemed and honorable member of the Crownsworn scolded Abbas of the Isles for making his record in the whites. This action was quickly corrected after we were all reminded of the important words of the Scholars:

"Let the most studious amongst you take sacred vow to forever guard the knowledge of the world, and allow all among you from the greatest to the least to chronicle their lives in journals so their knowledge may never be lost."

To know these words is one thing, but to have to apply them to the lives of actual people can sometimes be quite another. So much so that even the best of us may, occasionally, stumble. In knowing that, and knowing that there are those in this world who are far less gregarious and far more stubborn, it becomes clear to see how some could fall to such depths as our Silent Reflections.

To be a Scholar is to constantly remind oneself that our time is not special, and the laws that have governed us must continue to do so. We must not be swayed by our own situations away from those laws.

I shall carve a crest in blood in your name, Princess. Wait, what, that's not what people like to have happen? Shit, I need a really fast horse and a tiny messenger. Actually, that sounds like effort. Sorry about those deaths. They seemed good at the time?

Two pieces of advice:

1. If you want something, don't tell anyone you want it until it's already in your grasp, they'll just take it away from you
2. Tears are better than diamonds for getting you out of situations you don't want to be in.

Splendiferously annoyed,

Things are so very different here in Arx compared to the White City. So many people from all our allies all living in one giant city-fortress. So many different ideas and voices to listen to. So many things to see and witness. You could be sipping on Lycene wine while eating Oathlands cheese, Redrain game on a table crafted from sturdy Grayson oaks while talking with a Thraxan all at the same time. I find it chaotic, but maybe in a good way? In the midst of all the chaos, I'm still able to train with the very best.

And yet when I stop any of my activities I'm participating during the set times of prayer and face west to Sanctum to kneel to the gods and worship, why is it I'm looked at differently?

I've been out of it for a bit. It's foaling season and that has my full attention. Re-emerged to take a look at journals. World still ending, check. People still stupid, check. Missed a few good dust-ups in the whites, alas.

Still, it's foaling season.

And I may be a rude, cynical bastard (I plead guilty), but it's hard not to hope when fuzzy little foals are testing their wobbly legs for the first time.

Some eventful days.

After some thought Princess Sabella has taken me on as my patron. She pays me money and I write. It's an ideal situation. I have already had several plays performed in Arx, but now we should be able to perform in the city's finest venues.

A few days who I found a part of my heart I didn't even realize was missing. Elara is here in Arx. My best friend and (reluctant) co-conspirator from my childhood in Stormward. I haven't seen her in such a long time. And I cannot blame anyone for it but myself and my tendency to put anyone out of sight out of mind. We need to make up for lost time. I'd say we should go steal some pie from the kitchens, but I tried doing that a couple of weeks ago and the cook chased me down to give me a plate and ask if I'd like a glass of milk. Not quite the same. Perhaps we should pay a visit to Octavia's office. Borrow a gavel.

Spent a morning taking a walk with Lady Estil. That was quite nice.

Bought a bird. It's a nightmare and I will probably lose an eye before I teach it to deliver messages without shitting everywhere or vomiting fish all over the recipient.

Relationship Note on Corban

Lord Corban is always a genteel, educated, and honorable conversational partner. It is a pleasure to speak with him, even when we don't agree.

Although he has, perhaps, been spending too much time around Lycene nobility - I expect an Oathlands noble to blush when saying some things to a priest's face.

The Legate of Concepts and I do not always see eye-to-eye on the places where the Faith and governing intersect. (I would not claim to be even conversant with him on matters of Faith alone.)

But we always have a frank exchange of views, he and I, and I come away stronger and more thoughtful for having spoken with him. We should all be so fortunate to have an interlocutor as sharp and as patient as Father Orazio in our lives.

Relationship Note on Arn

Duke Arn Telmar has loyally served my family since before he ruled the Telmarch. It is no wonder why my Uncle Radley, the once Prince of Sanctum -- may the Gods bless his soul -- appointed the indomitable Duke as Lord Marshal of the Oathlands.

I deeply feel that this letter, penned in bold crimson and posted throughout the Ward of Valardin, deserves to be preserved for posterity.
______

People of the Oathlands,

War is upon us. For some of you, this is your first opportunity to fight for your high lord. For others, it will be your last. For an unfortunate few, it will be both. In the end, it is in the hands of the gods when we live and when we die. While we live, we do what we can to protect those close to us, punish the wicked, and uphold the just. Have faith in the gods. Have faith in your commanders. Have faith in your lieges. Have faith in your high lord. Have faith in yourself. Above all, have faith in the men and women standing beside you in the field of battle. It is these people to whom you will entrust your life and your mission.

We go to war not for the petty grievances of men but for the survival of our people against a wicked foe. They do not attack us directly, but should the Lyceum fall or the Mourning Isles, or the North, or even the Crownlands - the Oathlands could not stand alone. We have no peer in faithfulness nor knighthood, yet even a land as strong as ours would fall if isolated.

Clear your minds, warriors of the Oathlands. Toughen your hearts. Say goodbye to your loved ones. To those who sail the seas, remember the words of Farshaw - The Horizon is Ours. To those who ride to Southport, remember the words of House Laurent - Loyal to the Queen. To those riding north with our high lord, show our enemies that steel bends but honor holds. But above all, Oathlanders:

FEAR NO ENEMY.

Arn Telmar
Duke of the Telmarch
