From the journal of Brenlin, Aide-de-Camp to Lady Miranda Rubino, Commander of Gemecitta's Gryfalcon Infantry, Sword of Gemecitta, Voice of Gemecitta, Knight of Gemecitta...

Day 1-2, Traveling to Gemecitta...

My lady clearly does not know how to 'take a day off'. The whole point of leaving Arx is not to insist on thinking about Arx, bemoaning things she's left undone, and answering missives that I deem unimportant. That's my job. I can answer those.

She's been working so much for everyone and our House, especially, she has forgotten the need to look after herself.

That is also my job.

My work is never done.

Also, Jewel has peed on me. Damned cat.

Relationship Note on Aureth

As a member of the Faith, a master crafter and member of the Crafters Guild, I show my support with the Faith's embargo against Eurus and will no longer be creating pieces of art with any material that is imported from there such as Pyran fireweave. The Pins and Needles at Arx and my shops elsewhere will no longer offer any designs with these embargoed materials. Those asking will be politely turned away towards other materials that aren't affront to the Faith. Any and all Pyran fireweave that I might have had is destroyed so no one can profit from it, and I'll take the financial hit.

It's painful to me as an artist to hinder my creativity, but sometimes sacrifices are needed to show solidarity.

In the future, embargoes might be even better if the Crafters Guild and our Guildmaster are engaged so we can work out logistics. We're honorable folk, many are disciples devoted to the Faith and pursuit of bettering our Art. We work together to make the world more beautiful and better.

Relationship Note on Maja

It's the most contact I've had with people in many months, Maja. I both have to thank you for the generosity given and..the patience you displayed. Don't go /too/ harshly on Aila. I could have put a stop to it at any time, but she's a treasure. You let me know if she finds a pirate husband on the docks soon and if not, I'll be on the hunt for one.

Hopefully we can see each other again soon, Maja. I'll be in a better frame of mind this time around. Promise.

With the recent proclamation by the Faith barring trade with Eurus, I worry for my highly skilled tailor friends in the Crafter's Guild for whom fireweave is a lucrative material to work. I notice that Cardian steelsilk has doubled in price at market, and I have no doubt that many moneyed sorts who might have considered fireweave in the past now look to that as an alternative. I very much hope they will reconsider. Cardian steelsilk is made with slave labor as well, extracted under writ, and I can't actually see any distinction worth drawing between one slaver source and another. Perhaps our foreign visitors can illuminate a difference more readily apparent to their eyes than mine.

Until I receive some sort of clarity on the matter, Cardian materials will not be worked at my shop.

I suppose it is a good thing I didn't have my eye on a few somethings. Nevertheless, onward toward other avenues as one never halts progress over a little bad news.

It has made me wonder about the misguidedness of some, though. Such a pity.

For a considerable time, we Arvani have engaged in trade with the Eurusi despite troubling aspects of their practices. We have turned a blind eye to their crimes against the gods, to heretical interpretations of our canon, to the cruelty of men and women forced into labor. We have enjoyed the benefits of those trade despite the fact that the very same traders with whom we exchanged goods profited from slavery, an abomination to the First Choice and to the Pantheon.

In light of recent events, the Faith can no longer stand silent against the practices of Eurus. Until such time as the Eurusi recognize the intrinsic value of the human soul and the anathema of slavery are recognized, trade with Eurus must fall under the interdict of the Faith. We cannot morally profit from an ugly economic tie to a traders who treat people as chattel.

It must stop.

As sworn Shepherd of the Faithful, I must light the way back to the path of the faithful where we have strayed. Traders who defy this ruling will face the grave disappointment of the Church, and all that this entails.

This embargo begins by my hand this 20th day of the 6th month of 1011.

I adore flowers, especially those found in the northlands such as the glory-of-the-snow. It is a hardy, lovely flower, and it proves that even in the farthest reaches something that one can perceive as delicate can flourish and spread its glow across the land. Strength comes in many forms, is seen and admired in so many ways. To cast aspersions against those given the seemingly delicate title of a flower proves that one perhaps does not understand flowers, their nature, and the many forms and uses they have.

I'd suggest spending some time with those scholars who study the flora, then. Spend some time with those who love the land and the way it nourishes our bodies, minds, and spirits. Spend time with those apothecaries who use flowers and herbs. And yes, even with those who blend the teas that some of us love.

It is never too late to broaden one's horizons, open your mind to ideas, and learn something new, even about delicate flowers.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

I cannot think of a member of the peerage more deserving of a fond eulogy than Niccolo, though I am pretty annoyed that he forgot to remind his barkeep to let me behind the bar at the Black Fox before he passed. Now it's a complicated system of lies to get into that room and let me tell you: I have yet to find a more comfortable chair for reading than back there.

The Lyceum weaves a tangled web of family lines and ties by design. We value when our family solidifies those ties via marriages and when someone joins our house, he or she becomes one of our own: Velenosa. A Fox. To lead the Lyceum is an artful job, and one held by some of the most brilliant minds I've lucked to not only meet but call my family.

Niccolo was one of those artful rulers and his influence pulsed through more than his own titled reign. Niccolo helped our political climate by magnanimously lending his experience and thoughts to those who came so successfully after him. I was witness to his sharp mind -- and dry wit -- and I am a better noble for it, as were others who came across his path.

And that is the legacy of House Velenosa: our strengths, we pass forward to those around us, so that our leaders may grow ever better.

And so they do.

Relationship Note on Syd

We met at the Shrine of Gloria, in the wintertime.

You asked me about Queen Alarice and you brought me joy with your reasoning that Alarice the Cleaver is far more formidable a name than the Great. It was a sound argument! Amusement is rare in my heart. It is hard for me. I was glad to have met you. For your kindness.

You cared about others -- such as a young knight who is burdened by her duties, her past. Her failings. You cared for one who brought ruin unto himself -- you still found time to empathize. It is cruel and wicked for many to pit themselves against one, you believed. There is no righteousness to a mob. What a wicked irony.

These actions have drawn me from my stargazing and the world I see reminds me of why I look heavenward. But that is cowardice in a way, to neglect all around me for my own peace of mind. For the dazzling shine of those indifferent stars.

It is the sworn duty of a knight to protect the defenseless. We all have made these oaths.

If you shrink from this because those under threat are not like you, believe in different things, or come from a different walk of life, then you have failed. A knight is a symbol. Our actions are not reflections of the world, but are reflected in the world. If you cannot sustain the weight of that, than you have made an err.

Glory belongs to the righteous, to the world we protect. It is not ours to claim, but to give.

I suppose I cannot ask anything of the knights of the Compact -- Am I not the Knight of Sunflowers? I have failed too. But as I yet live, I will make right the wrongs that I am able by protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

Nothing else matters, what other reason is there to take up a sword, that vaunted instrument of killing, If not in the defense of the helpless? Be the Symbol you swore to become. The world needs the inspiration we provide more than ever.

Yesterday, I happened upon a rabbit with the reddest eyes. Now that alone is unusual, yet I was more surprised that the cat didn't immediately go for the kill. My leg is still sore from how fast she'd scaled me just to get away from the damn thing. I don't usually consider rabbits a frightening predator, so I really am hoping that was just a one-time thing.

If any happen to see a rabbit with red eyes in the future, I don't recommend one fucks with it.

Relationship Note on Syd

Today, my heart is broken.

My friend is dead. Not a welcomed death warm in his bed and surrounded by those who loved him as he wished. But a cold and cruel one. One that had him hurt and broken.

Lord Syd was my friend. Not only my friend, but my teacher and mentor. The person who gave me sage advice and took me on crazy adventures with his words and gave me clarity about all the little things that make up a life.

My heart hurts to know we will never share any more wine, or be scolded by you about fanciful stories. No more scheming about flaming arrows or hearing you tell people I threw my guards out a window.

You, my friend will be greatly missed. There is not enough words to express my sorrow at this loss.

When I heard the news about Lord Syd I had to sit for a few minutes. He was a kind man and quick witted and charming, though remembering names didn't seem to be his strong suit. The thought of how he is said to have died...makes me feel ill. He didn't deserve to die like that! Nobody does! May justice find those responsible swiftly!

I am so sorry that no one was there to help protect you when you needed it. And I also hope you landed more than a few blows in return. My heart is heavier today.

I don't get paid for 'most things I do'. In addition, and it may shock you to learn this; most sellswords aren't nobles slumming it up to play soldier. Most sellswords have to buy their own food, shelter, and equipment, many sellswords have families relying on their work, and most of them don't get money handed to them whenever they have a whim. Doing the nobility's dirty work is expensive in both resources and actual lives, so damned straight you get charged when you want more people to stick on the front lines of your wars. You expect us to die for you, for free? With what rations, with what weapons, with what armor should we do that, exactly? Your own soldiers don't march without food and equipment, I wonder if Pravus sneers at them as well.
