churned by the tide
that batters the breakwaters
of the Morning Isles,
you told me.
I was happy for a time.
I am beloved of the roses
and the drowned
and the men
who seize their own souls
on quiet roads,
and release them again,
to die
in quiet dreams of me.
I was happy for a time.

No riddle is impossible, my love,
I tell her,
with tears in my throat.
The lack of an answer is more than an answer,
the lack of an answer is precisely that which you seek.

Relationship Note on Syd
So many things I wish I could say to you.
I have written this page a dozen times and yet words seem to fail to adequately express how I feel. How much I enjoyed your company; how much you touched my heart; made me smile; and how deeply you will missed. More than you will ever understand, I think.
If the gods are kind and there is any good in this world, I hope we meet again one day. Somehow.
Until then, my heart to you, my beautiful sweet and beloved friend.
With deepest gratitude and love.

Is it our coin they covet? Our silks? Our art? It is something I've never had the right opportunity to ask. Perhaps now I never will.

Lord Syd Volkov was murdered.
It breaks my heart that such a man met such a fate.
Such a funny, enjoyable fellow.
Tragic news to hear while on holiday...
I hope his family finds peace and those responsible are found and dealt with properly.

Some scamp may believe they can escape such, that the Legates are here in Arx. Father Aureth will not notice if you buy this fabric, you think. Just one shipment might slip past Mother Ailith. And it is true, the Legates themselves are here in Arx. But. The will of the Faith is not enforced by them alone. The Templars stand as the arm of the Faith, and we are everywhere. Every parish, every port, every castle. We will see your misdeeds. You see, you do not have to evade one Legate, or 4. You do not have to evade the Dominus. Or indeed the 13 Archlectors and 2 Grandmasters. You must evade a hundred thousand Templars. A hundred thousand Solace. You must evade each Scholar and every Mercy. Is it not easier to live without foreign niceties paid for by the diminishing of our righteousness than it is to live with that guilt and doubt pressing on you?

To trade with the Eurusi, whose culture and religion demand that they lay tribute at the feet of the Dark Reflections of our Pantheon, was always moral issue. It was always wrong to look away from the evil abroad in order to line our purses. As the Eurusi influence attempts to mount, as their darkness spreads among our impoverished populace while they claim merely to be here to observe, as a few outliers amongst our peerage flirt with the politics of justification with respect to embroilment in their black deeds:
For too long the Faith was silent. Now we speak.
I took an oath to shepherd the Faithful, to protect the lost and the wandering and lead them back to the light. I shall do so until Death returns me to Her Wheel.
