Wolves make for terrible fucking eating, you were lucky in more ways than one.

I had a very pleasant evening atop a boulder in the Gray Forest this week.

Most of my stories end with dead men.

There is one though from several years ago when the Crows were far to the northwest of the map. I told this story once to Lottie and she liked it enough that I guess it was time to commit it to record. Maybe someone wiser than me will learn a thing from the telling. Who can say.

I have been thinking about it lately, nonetheless.

We had made camp to await orders from our employers. It was two days and already we were getting restless. When soldiers get restless, they get stupid. There were three of us who this happened to; myself, young fellow named Pyewacket, and Burke. And we volunteered to go hunting. We were low on meat and soldiers can't survive on alcohol alone.

It was a harsh and brutal land. Winters were long and the snow was coming down in torrents that could knock you clear from your saddle. We stayed close to a small grouping of trees, a copse I think they're called, hardly a forest, hoping to catch some stag or foolish goat wandered from its farm.

Burke saw him first, prowling low to the ridge of a snowy hill. Burke was our sharpest scout after Ayleen. He always said--when we told this story--that he saw the thing's eyes first. They were icy blue against the full grey coat. None of us had ever seen a wolf so big, or broad, and we weren’t certain it wasn’t some lost long-hair warhorse.

When I was a boy, a she-wolf bit me near the edge of the Gray. Since then I’ve been cautious around the beasts. So I was hesitant to provoke it. Pyewacket kept saying wolves don’t hunt alone; that a pack must be nearby.

But Burke didn’t listen to either of us. Dumb and hungry as he was and, well, maybe a little drunk.

He slung an arrow and fired it right at the thing. It went wide, lost in the powder of the hill. The wolf stopped-still in its tracks and looked right at us.

And we froze.

Sometimes a thing comes over a man and he is helpless against it; the whole world opens up to stare right at him in that moment. Nothing can prepare you for such a feeling. Facing your own insignificance.

After a minute it started coming down the hill at no special hurry, padding through the snow drift like it walked on air. Burke got enough madness to fire another arrow. This one missed as well. The closer the wolf came, the more frantic our archer got, arrow after arrow fired until his quiver was empty.

Before that moment I thought he could never miss. I had seen Burke hit the flame off a candle from an acre away.

It was at the edge of the trees when he found his voice.

'Kill it, Gallows.’ He said to me. 'Kill it!'

I went for my sword then, like a seizure, found that I couldn’t draw it; I don’t know, maybe my nerves were shot too. The wolf just sat there a while and then turned and walked away back toward the hill, as if it’d been daring us to kill it. And we were not up to snuff.

But we had all lost our courage and wouldn't pursue. Pyewacket even pissed himself. Dumb kid. We had to return before he was frozen in his trousers.

So, empty-handed, we went back to camp. That was that.

I don't know, but the whole thing was strange.

Don't know if I'll ever forget it.

Morning Mist Hill stands once more. I am so very thankful to all those who made this possible. This was to honor Sandrine in a way that she would have approved of, not a gaudy memorial but a place that took care of children and praised the Gods. The addition of the library is to honor Brother Martin. In a way he would have approved of. To inspire and enrich the lives of the young that will grow up there. If you ever find yourself on pilgrimage I encourage you to travel to Morning Mist Hill. Sandrine is a hero of the faith and I hope everyone gets to hear her story.

I have already mentioned so many people that this could not have happened without. I would like to thank again Korka Glynn, Bliss Whisper, Prince Niklas Grayson, and Princess Caith Thrax for helping me scout the location and rediscover Morning Mist Hill. Then to all those who donated, we received more than enough and the site is beautiful. Thank you all so much. Your generosity and your kindness will not be forgotten.

Where are Lord Ian or Lord Wash when you want to ask advice on picking out a ship to outfit for Saikland? Lord Wash may possibly be away from the city, but Lord Ian I did not interrupt because he was rather … er… busy … er.. relaxing with his wife. I'll just try again later.

At least now I will have to introduce myself to a lot less people in the future and it was fun.

Know that one thousand and nine years have passed since the Reckoning. Today is the twenty-seventh day of the fifth month. I am writing from the city of Arx at the Caravan Mercantile Echange in the Ward of the Compact. I am Candace Corvo, partner of the Exchange, and this is my white journal.

At long last, I've convinced the others of the need to tend not just to the needs of the caravan owners, but those engaged in private trade as well. I suspect they wanted me to remodel their offices, and as it suited me to include a consignment area, we will both get what we wanted. So this means that men and women like me, who had found strange and wonderful things while trekking across Arvum in the service of trade, will have a place to sell their goods.

They come in far too small a quantity to be sold at retail markets. The lumber and produce, ores and textiles, all those things go to the market in great and seemingly endless quantities. But should a carpenter who happens upon a remarkable statuette of driftwood from the Bay of Thrax or a batik from the Lyceum go to a retailer to sell this unique marvel? They could. I had to. And the retailers could rake one over the coals for a share of the profit they didn't earn but for having a storefront.

I can offer them a much better deal than that.

Exhausting! Exhausted!

I have been busy - spent nearly three days going through shipments of crates from the Oathlands. Sadly, many of them were from before I'd properly learned to separate the wheat from the chaff, wares-wise. No one needs this much chipped pottery! No one wants an example of a Three Queens era chamberpot, even if it IS well-preserved and with a lovely floral pattern. I assume that was wishful thinking. And absolutely no one wants a wooden statue of a tiny bearded man with no maker's mark and no useful purpose. I don't even know why I kept that!

Actually. I don't remember finding that. Huh. Regardless, it is useless! And not even very attractive. Augh, the eyes. The eyes are looking at me!

Be right back, putting a cloth over a tiny creepy statue.

I always wanted another brother! Though Artur is pretty hard to beat in the best brother category. Best fake brother, though? I don't have one of those. Or /do/ I now? More truly, I'm amused that the painting I promised for the mansion came on the same day that Artur sent something. He really does give some of the best gifts!

Is it secretly my birthday? AM I A PRINCE? You laugh, but it happens! Waking up from another restless night’s sleep to a showering of unexpected presents is very welcome and really, I’d like to encourage this in any way that I can -- particularly when the senders are those for whom I feel nothing but the greatest brotherly affection. Gwenna and Artur make me long for Farhaven, and grateful for what of it exists here in Arx.

Oh well. Everything will be put to use.

I've rarely met people more eager to make a deal, either. It's almost enough to make one suspicious.

The first day of the joint fund raiser for the Order of East Light with the Knights of Solace ended and what a day! With medallions as prizes made by Mistress Josephine, they are amazing I am in love with these things, we ran some fun games. A fight, a joust, a foot race, and a team event that left most of the participants covered in lemon cream, /no/ idea how those holes fill with cream got there, honest!

It touched my heart to see how many came out to enjoy the festivities and further who donated at the event. Between the wonderful praise that was overheard and the silver and resources I just couldn't keep from giving a thank you to each and every one.

Lady Tabatha Whitehawk
Master Rook Grayward and Mistress Yasmine Rovashani
Lord Corbit Leary
Baron Edward Stormbreak
Squire Sparte

Your donations are generous and I cannot express my gratitude enough.

Lady Tabatha Whitehawk
Marquis Fairen Leary
Lady Amari Keaton
Princess Reese Grayson
Lady Miranda Rubino
Princess Fatima Thrax
Mistress Siobhan Moonwrought
Princess Denica Thrax
Master Aaron

Your kind words and enthusiasm humble me, I could not be happier that this event brought such joy. Thank you, all of you, for your praise.

Tonight there are more opportunities to win one of these medallions, more opportunities to enjoy games and fun. And of course there will be the opportunity to win a day with so many of our wonderful people, including
Highlord Victus,
Grandmaster Thena,
Admiral Turo,
Princess Denica,
Princess Sorrel,
Princess Elgana,
Princess Katarina,
Duke Dagon,
Lady Carita,
Archlector Etienne,
Lady Rosalie,
And Lord Alexandre.

This list might well grow even further before the event, but what a list!

My gratitude to every single amazing person who has helped, donated, participated, or spoken a kind word cannot be measured. Ok I should stop now before the poor scholar gives me any more of those looks.

I have, of late, discovered that green paint and lemon cream look particularly fetching on an Archlector's robes.

... in spite of the lectured I received for putting them there.
