Relationship Note on Niccolo

Stealing into the library like the stealthiest of huntresses, I prowled up to my Duke-Uncle and he was so overcome with both being impressed and surprised, he declared me his favorite niece on the spot. Okay. I didn't quite prowl, I knocked, and I didn't quite surprise him, I curtsied. It does make for a better story the other way though, doesn't it? Although, he DID proclaim me as his favorite niece and even complimented my newly purchased ribbons as suiting me perfectly, to which I am so delightfully pleased. While it was much to his regret that it would be unlikely to arrange a hunting trip any time soon with situations are they are, he did mention the idea of perhaps joining me in one at a later date. I simply must find a new horse -immediately-.

Here I am writing again.
I have met the Prince Gareth of House Grayson, who is also of the Royal Inquisition. His Highness seemed nice enough. He's a stern man, but that's to be expected, as he must be in great pain because of his scars and everything. He asked if I would work for him, but I told him he'd have to ask this of House Redrain. I did send him a small pot of burn ointment for his scars, and something for the pain.

I have also collected some plants around the city, such as I found just growing out on the streets, not in anyone's gardens. I don't believe there is any law against this. Why, maybe the King should be paying me for it. I pulled down a chokewood vine off a branch before it rotted right through. It could have broken off and landed on someone's head, right on the street, or worse. And it was a good and solid tree that could live to see my grandchildren's grandchildren, if fate has any in store for me.

Also, once steeped, this vine is of great use for the innards, such as when they are loose after eating spoiled meat and some of the more flavorful dishes of the Lyceum.

And that is all I am writing now.

A most curious thing happened the other day - no, not taking a few turns in the training center with Victus, though maybe he thought so himself. The curious thing was the new student I managed to gain. Now I know what you're thinking: what could be curious about that? Well, I shan't leave you in suspense. That student is none other that Gareth Grayson, which is to say, Inquisitor Gareth Grayson.

I think we both know not to expect any miracles, but as he has come to me, I will afford him the same time and attention I give all the rest of my students.

That said, let's go back to Victus. Surely he's killed women in combat before. I know I have, and guess what? They die just like men. So why should he feel at all chagrined to stand next to me in the ring?

Relationship Note on Eugine

Duke Eugine Grimhall seems to be focusing on improving the economic status of his house by finding more sailors. An admirable goal, and one that I can support. I hope to see what other plans he has for the future of his house. A prosperous Grimhall can only help Thrax continue to thrive.

Relationship Note on Victus

Our first meeting didn't go as well as I'd have hoped. He almost immediately took a disliking to me, which I found very strange, since we have so much in common. He's above self deception, as I believe myself to be. He's proud of our culture, as I am. He craves further brutal and bloody war as I do. We're both thraxian to the marrow of our bone and I see no practical reason for us to be at one another's throats. rHe is at least, very mercenary in nature, and took on a different tone once I made him a certain offer. My main worry is that once I make good on my side of the deal he's going to go straight back to antagonizing me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, since I do believe we've mutual desires and could benefit one another greatly, but if the carrot doesn't work..

Oh, this is fun. Let's see. How to begin: Dear Diary.

The Velenosa flower gardens are beautiful. I could get lost in them. I almost did, really, for a couple of hours, at least, but then I decided to make the very best use of my time. I set myself to the dedicated task of trying to shoot the bottom flower off each trailing strand and following those I hadn't shot, I expertly navigated through them. I lost several dozen arrows, but I simply have to befriend the grandest fletcher to fill my quiver once more.
Oh, I know I'm supposed to find some very great and important meaning here, but it's all such an adventure. Peeking through the barriers in the Menagerie only reminds one of how many things there are out there and I instantly walked, in a very lady-like fashion, towards the Shrine of Petrichor in hopes of being blessed to blissfully hunt them all down one by one.
And on top of that, my dear brother Luca is here. You've heard of him, right? I missed him terribly. I bet he's let his hair grow out once more. I did buy a brilliant new knife the other day, though I've yet to use it. I wonder if he'll let me cut it? Do people cut hair with knives? In that case, I'm off to buy a brilliant new pair of scissors. Yay.

Yours Truly,
Ophelia

Relationship Note on Hadrian

I first got to know Duke Hadrian through his white journals. Although an entry in one had me sending the man an honor challenge before ever seeing his face. That turned out to be a mistake of the scribe however and we since met at the menagerie to get to know one another better. He seems a martial man for a Duke, with more interest in the intricacies of swordplay than most who rule, he also seems to like his vices so we have many passions in common.

Relationship Note on Marian

I took an instant liking to Princess Marian Valardin. When it comes to women who fight there are those who just wish to be men, those who just want something that will impress a would be husband, and then there are those who are actually still feminine but fight because it is what they love to do. I see Princess Marian as the third kind, and feel she may be a kindred spirit in that way... Although her feminine side could use a little help.

Arx is still incalculably huge, more people than I had seen in my entire life when I was growing up visible down each thronging street. So many of these people are rich, but so many also have flocked to that dream of wealth and ease in the capital only to find themselves sorely disappointed. Bread does not improve their situation but it does at least give them time. Mapping the city on the other hand prevents me from getting lost, or at least I hope so. The capital sprawls out from the central ward:

It is important that I do my best not to represent the Faith, not to mention the Crown, positively. Confusing as it might be this does involve learning how the nobility expect to be addressed, degrees of curtsey, the various elaborate tools they use to help establish and maintain their dignity. Writing it down seems to work well to settle things in my mind:

Gareth Grayson... what a very, very awkward man. I can't decide whether to laugh at or pity his social ineptitude. His methods of bestowing compliments are brusque and aggressive, and I'm not certain if he knows how to conduct himself properly. Perhaps the Prince is just very shy and has difficulties expressing himself to other people. Why just the other day he was saying I was uncultured and a savage, and he even went to the extent of writing out his admiration for me. I wonder if he's aware of the saying that the more you're a detestable bastard to someone, the more indicative it is that you're quite taken with them. If the other day is any example to go by, he must like me A LOT. Ah, Prince Inquisitor, I'm afraid I can't return your affections. You're just not the man for me and I don't have time for that. You'll find your Princess, somewhere, someday.

All it takes to destroy a great house is an assassin, a king's ransom, a Lady in Silk and a scapegoat. It must irk House Thrax greatly to know how close they to going the way of their former lords, House Marion. House Thrax must rely on the inquisition if they hope to have any chance of survival. I suspect they'd rather sell their collective souls to a demon though than put their faith in House Grayson.

Morrighan.. what an interesting woman to meet. This disgusting excuse for a 'human' will be tolerated, so long as Redrain holds the leash. House Grayson does not forget it's allies, nor its debts.

Relationship Note on Marian

My sister-in-law, and the Sword of House Valardin. She is brave and strong, a woman who was infinitely worthy of my brother's regard. I am both glad that she took Oathbreaker, and that she has come to Arx to be with us. There is much that I know she can teach me, and she is another fierce woman warrior.

It's my believe people want to and will always live like this, with scores of servants and big manors — which makes men like me necessary. The only reason that we get to continue living like kings is because we've got our fingers on the scales in our favor. I take my hand off and then the whole world gets really fair really quickly, and nobody actually wants that. They say they do, but they don't. They want what I have to give them, but they also want to, I don't know, play innocent and pretend they have no idea where our wealth comes from. Well, that's more hypocrisy than I'm willing to swallow. It's rule or be ruled.

rWe’re all arrogant assholes. Difference is, I admit it, I don’t dress it up and tell myself that I’m a bitch and that that’s a good thing.

Relationship Note on Audric

I'm still not sure what exactly to say about the Captain General, but he certainly left an impression that isn't one quickly forgotten. He's witty and enthusiastic, with just that hint of a vicious side that keeps everything intact. His set of guidelines (because they're not quite morals, and I can't think of a better name), at the very least, is interesting. He's really the kind of person that you could listen to for hours. I have little doubt that he'll probably end up working for someone against me at one point or another, and I don't look forward to that at all, but the times when he isn't might be worth chasing a little. He's that entertaining.

I had met Arianwen not long after I had come to the city, to say our meeting did not go over very well when she made it sound like I was some cheap noblewoman's duelling dummy, would be an understatement. I stayed away from her in fear my temper may snap and I'd harm her or order her harmed, but I happened upon her in the Training center when I went to watch some training going on. Arianwen happened to be there and she took it upon herself to come up to me and immediately apologize. We re-introduced ourselves to each other, and strange as it may seem, likely a growing friendship might come of the meeting.

Relationship Note on Calista

This witty young noblewoman would surely put some of the proper ladies in the city on edge with her ever so slight scandalous way of dress and talk. This is likely why Fergus seems to enjoy her company so much, as he himself really does not entirely care too much for the Social norms.

Relationship Note on Victus

Victus and I understand one another. Yes, he is terrifying and almost ten times larger than I am, but I do enjoy his company. Perhaps because he is one of the few people who seems completely honest and does not attempt to shield me from all of the bad things in life, our conversations end up being quite informative. I do have to ask my handmaiden what some of the more colorful words and terms mean afterwards, but it certainly is a learning experience and I am well equipped should I decide to become a pirate.
