Relationship Note on Jael

After inadvertently interrupting Jael's prayers at the shrine of Gloria, I aim to make it up to her.

Not sure which surprised me more. Losing. Or realizing after how little the losing bothered me.

Aleksei fought amazingly. Perhaps the best I've ever seen from him.

Me? My mind was filled with my lost Essie, vengeance, love delayed, Bringers, Brand, and threats to the city and land.

Fuck me, I'd almost prefer going back to being bored out of my skull and drinking most of my life away.

Maturity is hard work and I hate work!!!

Relationship Note on Luca

It was a hard job but someone had to do it and sometimes one just has to sacrifice themselves for the good of the people. And if that means having to slather oil over a half naked man, then so be it, I'm more than willing to offer myself up as tribute. Even if it means that my hands will smell of oils for the rest of the week. The things I do for Arx.

You big beautiful fucking bastard. I will get you one day. I will. You're that one mountain everyone wants to climb. I'll do it! Eventually!

On foes to come:
Of the Herald and his army of the Silence: not an army like any other, though it is an army the massed strength of the Compact can overcome through wisdom and warlike power. A mix of the living and restless dead, this will be one of the grand battles beloved of mainland bards.

Of the Gyre, one may plan for a war of ships and shavs, blood mad and mindless though they be, that would much resemble any other war of fleets in recent centuries, though writ upon a larger scale. Yet there is one element of this war in the southern seas that is unlike any other since the burning of the great library: it is called the kraken.

At a gathering in the Thrax palace, I was given an account of the Demon of the Deeps, the great beast called the kraken. It is said that its arms are thicker than a strong man's body, long enough to drag entire ships to doom. That it draws near to the surface to feed, and swallows warriors whole. It is said that its hide turns aside steel as easily as it does seawater, truly a monster out of legend.

I hear these stories and am glad, for if this is all true, the monster can be killed. Not without great cost in blood and ships, but it can be killed by our mortal hands. Now I begin to consider how.

Though common steel causes its hide no harm, if it is indeed demon-spawn mayhap the higher metals might yet have an effect upon it's body much as they have on the lesser demons slain thus far in Arvum: diamondplate and alaricite, weapons fit for the hands of heroes who would stand against such a monster, though at dreadful cost, for any warrior who falls in the deep shall be lost until the final night of this world, precious weapon and all.

I have considered the use of keenly pointed rams fitted to our longships, that once the beast surfaces to feed, surrounding ships might swarm is as a flock of oar-driven arrows, though the monster's nature of being proof against common metals might make such a tactic ineffective as well as badly slowing the ships at sail and unbalancing the craft's design. As well, should such rams piece the body, great damage to the ship might be done when the beast again dives deep. An unlikely course to follow, this.

Though fire is the bane of any ship crafted of timbers and sealed with tar, one must wonder the effect flame would have upon hide and sinew. A wrack loaded as a fireship; hurled pots of quicklime or pitch; a firelance kindled from Lagoma's shrine. All of these could do much or nothing.

Lastly, there is the question of Mangata's holy water. Alas that Godsworn of our race are so few, for I would greatly desire to see the effect of thirteen holy men channeling the Goddess' blessing through Mangata's own blessed seawater, when this dire beast arises to consume a ship. Can the seas themselves boil and burn such an unclean monster?

Good round of lessons in the Training Center. The new recruits did better than I expected. They're a solid lot, I hope we get more like them.

The finale, as Lord Commander Silas called it, was he and I pairing off against the other four Guards.

I did not expect us to win.

The other four did very well, Reese hits like a damn boulder on a chain, Calathane is lighter on his feet than he thinks and works well with a good defender to keep him focused. Sparte received training from Leta Broadbent earlier today, and it seemed to do him quite well.

Lord Killian was there to help out the others, and he did well enough with them.

We were all breathing hard and sweaty when it was over. I'm fairly proud of them all, truly. Even Killian.

Alright. I need a bath and some bandaging. Where's that damn ointment-

I returned to Arx today and paid my respects at the shrine of Gloria. There I had the fortune to meet Sir Preston, the prince Jasher Thrax, and Lady Jael Laurent, who I believe may be somewhat of a kindred spirit--at least in humour. My sister, Lailah, came to the temple, and I managed to reconnect with her--always a pleasure after being away.

Relationship Note on Luca

I have purchased some time of Luca's at a bachelor auction for a really absurd and exorbitant sum of money and now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with him.

I have promised him that a barmaid's skirts will not be involved.

To the gentle reader:

It was such a pleasant day.

I sourced a bit of leather from a vendor in addition to a bit more rabbit pelt to have a pair of gloves made before the proper start of winter. Cold hands, warm heart. So I'm told. Although it's may be more correct to say: cold hands, frozen fingers. I spoke to a lovely assortment of people: including my cousin and a very talented seamstress. I also began collecting some liquors in earnest, as I need to begin planning a -- ah-ha. No telling you, gentles.

Although, I am wishing to expand my knowledge of what the Compact must offer as far as refreshments. Are concerned. We have a selection of whiskey at the Lodge. A couple different rums, vodka, and now a brandy. It would be nice to have a wider selection on offer. Suggest to me your favorites, gentles. Or tell me about a drinking game, a bawdy song - or, a funny story.

Went to the Fete of Champions for the show and some arm wrestling. I thought I was good back at home, but they pretty much chewed me up and spit me out here. Prince Luca Velanosa fought in the bout and then came and nearly ripped my arm out. He seemed like a good fellow. Then a woman, Zhayla, did pretty much the same. I'm going to need to do more exercising than just waving my hammer around here, I think. Welcome to the big city!

Relationship Note on Anabelle

She's arrived with her older sister. I know that she's going to do well within the city. She's always enjoyed people and people have always enjoyed her. Where better to find oneself under those circumstances than a place with half a million people thrown together? I think she will do well, though I can imagine her sister will have to rein her in from time to time. It is my sincere hope that she can find her place within the court and do what she enjoys.

I've already borne witness to her past habits forming within the city already. She truly does love to surround herself with people. Good for her. I am sure she'll be a delight for them as much as she expects them to be for her.

Relationship Note on Demura

An unexpected face to find in Arx. I imagine she sought to surprise me with her presence, since she didn't send word ahead. I may have stepped away from my family in order to take on the duty of protecting His Majesty, but that does not defeat the fact that it is good to see an old face from my youth in the city. She has done well by her House and I'm certain that she will be the bright hope for it. She has lost none of her confidence and self-assurance. I'm proud to see that she's taken to her role as Marquessa with such aptitude.

I am confident that she will lead her family resolutely forward with a steady hand, wisdom, and her own brand of charm. She brought her younger sister with her as well. I'm sure I'll be hearing their names regularly now. I wish them the best of luck and pray that they will do right by the people of Arx.

I found Elysia in your eyes, the Abyss in your absence. My world brightens by your existence, even if my destiny takes me elsewhere.

You're still pretty all right, though. I guess.

The Shield of the Compact has changed, and I am changing with it. No longer concerned so much with intelligence gathering, we're going to be dealing with tactics and fighting. Looking forward to Ansel's practice. We'll see how well we work together, and hopefully, my ability with the bow will help us develop better fighting tactics. Aside from that, I met the most delightful woman, a girl named Luna who has a pet bear and is determined to entertain and bring joy despite the fact that so many are sad. I admire that spirit!
