So Ida opened his asylum, which I am sure he would argue is terribly scientific, but from my interactions with the man I cannot half help but wonder if he should be an inmate within. Still, I helped him with founding it and with luck the establishment will do some good.

The banquet was a success, insomuch as my larders and cellar are now empty and no blood was spilled. Less cynically there seems to be a gratifying number of letters thanking me for the evening and it was wonderful to see so many attend.

All in all a success and something to repeat, though not too soon so as to avoid such events growing stale.

Relationship Note on Caelis

It is so good to have my cousin Caelis back in the city and with the family. I'm sure there are many tales to be told and adventures discovered between when I last saw her in Southport and now. Time really does have a way of both changing people and leaving them exactly as you left them. A grown woman with the same mischevious glint in her eyes. I can't wait for our adventures to coexist once more.

Relationship Note on Isabeau

Princess Isabeau returned at nearly the same time as Prince Beaumont, it seems.

I only remember talking briefly with her when visiting Sanctum, or when the Valardins came up to Telmarch, but she was always such a kind presence. I don't know if her and the Princess were as close as I was with Lily growing up, but they seem to know each other well, even now as adults.

She has a different manner than the Princess. A bit more direct, perhaps. Hard to get a finger on it exactly. But seeing Prince Beaumont with his sisters made me grateful for my own. Honor may well be the strength of the Oathlands, but the families are the backbone.

Relationship Note on Beaumont

Prince Beaumont is back, and in spectacular fashion.

I always enjoyed the Prince's visits to Telmarch, and not just because the Princess usually came along as well. He always managed to irk Tobias in the most satisfying of ways. Grandstanding, surely, but endearingly so. And certainly not undeservedly so.

It'll be good to have the Prince back around. I hope we have a shot at the Gauntlet together again soon.

I thought I'd put this in a seperate entry. I think I might open a restaurant, and have food in from all over the Oathlands and other regions, a gourmet sort of place that'll be sort of like the Salon with a lot less frou-frou. It's going to take time and money, but I think it'll be worth it. Now to think about names...

The time has come for me to return to the halls of my family, To return to life in the light once more rather than the shadows I have grown so fond of. Will I weather the coming storm or shall I be consumed by it once more? Will there be bloodshed awaiting my return or the open arms of family, as open as one can expect them to be after such a time and the subterfuge of hiding my hold on this life secret from them after my wreck.

Already I can smell the stench of the city and it isn't yet in sight fully, That dreadful scent of filth and misery that fills some of those city streets. Perhaps though this time it will be different, Maybe it is me holding to the thoughts and feelings of the past. What lays behind me also my future, but what lays ahead holds much uncertainty.. this is a new game, a new path. A new balance sought.

This week is filled with trepidation and excitement. We ride! Facing the Bringers in massed combat as our first real test as a people and an army. With any luck, we'll do the Valardin name proud, and save the Crownlands for now--at least long enough for us to catch a breather and educate ourselves more. Things have been tough with the sense of constant trepidation I've been feeling, and so I've been a great deal more cautious. The first training under Ansel with Calypso looking on went well for MiniDef. I look forward to more. But for now: may Gloria guide our arms and our cause!

Relationship Note on Calandra

Torian's niece, apparently. Glad I found the right place.

Says he's taking up leatherworking now; I suppose it's been just about 10 years, so anything could have happened. Need to find him and get caught up.

Lately I feel like I've been wrapped in a cloth, holding myself at a distance from most. Things that have happened, after all, have forced some rethinking.

But I shouldn't be doing so from those I care the most deeply about. Doing that -- assuming they would always be there -- is why I never really had a chance to say goodbye to Dawn. I figured sooner or later we'd have more time again... and then she was gone. We only saw each other the once, after the Teind.

Of my remaining handful, I've been bad about doing more than just sending messengers to three for some time, and I've barely even done that with the Adventure Twins. It's been too long since sitting on the floor of the Igniseri library with Vincere, or watching Pietro roll around on the floor with a puppy, or dragging them up into the treehouse to drink.

They were some of the first I befriended when I returned to the city to stay, in the wake of the King's Rest. I shouldn't let the darkness surrounding us keep me from enjoying what time we do have.

Relationship Note on Malena

Where can I start and what can I say about my own sister? She is the best, and I love her. She has been kind to me, and often shares my views. Though she can be a little bit more reserved than me, and I can be a little bit more reckless. I heard she is coming to town, and I'm quite excited.

The Duchess is a kind woman, and I like her snow leopard, called Herrath I think. That said, she is reserved and polite, quite an example of the social elite, and I believe that our research together for the Academy will have wonderful results.

Relationship Note on Jael

Lady Jael Laurent has a sharp sense of humour--the effects of which we unmissable last night. Her laughter, when unbidden, prompts uncontainable smiles of my own. And now that I know strategies for such victory, I vow in this space, to go out of my way to continue such action again and again.

Relationship Note on Luis

Lord Luis Igniseri has a way about him. With his sharp sense of humour, not-too-formal manners, and general ease of company, Lord Luis is both amiable and friendly. In short order, I believe we're becoming fast friends, and all through a chance meeting when the sun disappeared.

Like a brother, this one.

If he were to cry, I would mock him for it, but I would probably give him a shoulder to cry on.

I would then ask for the silver to have the leather unstained. That said, with how rare anything upsets him, I am on the lookout for teardrops of dragonweep.

Relationship Note on Valery

Timid, soft-spoken but altogether kind. Her mannerisms make me wonder what cruelty she has witnessed in her life and what has brought her here, but it is all for the better now that she has entered Redrain's service. Her knowledge of the wilds is valuable, her dedication to its flora and fauna.

Now to get her to see that the smallest nudge can start the avalanche.

Does battle mend a shattered heart?

Probably not, but at least challenge can give distraction and perhaps accomplishment give some sort of direction.

If nothing else, imagining Fawkface's head on every Bringer or shav I kill will at least make me smile.

It's the little things that keep life worth living.

I think the night before the battle is the worst... nothing but the darkness in which to argue your reasoning for surviving the coming melee.

But regardless of how convincing you are to the uncaring void, in that darkness is the reason that you may not... it haunts you, snatching away truly restful sleep.

More whiskey is in order...
