Relationship Note on Esoka

Another female Sword, Esoka is built like a brick crapper. She seems to be pretty good natured, but I think if you made her mad then it could be a whole different story. Met her at the Spirits one day, whereupon she told me a story of 14 year old Ferrando's pet name for his... fun sword, 'Killer Whale'. We both thought it was quite hilarious.

Relationship Note on Ferrando

For some reason this bouncer came to The Spirits to show off his skills of sausage swallowing to the locals, and I happened to be there. Ok, perhaps that wasn't exactly true, he ordered a venison sausage, I told the bartender southern boys can handle a big sausage, so he got a big sausage. Either way, this bouncer was pretty entertaining and kept the conversation going. Ive decided to call him Spider Man because he carries a spider around, but he might prefer to be called Killer whale for other reasons.

I met with Prince Laric this morning about my aspiration to serve as a magistrate for Arx. It was a nervous meeting, though I am sure I conducted myself correctly.

I have no question that he supports my bid for the position. He put increasingly difficult situations in front of me, and I answered them the way my years of expertise have led me to answer. The last scenario had a ring of truth to it: he has sat in the chair in that position, and he knows how difficult the answer is. My answer, I believe, matches what his decision was. I believe that he supported me before that point, and his question was not just to see my knowledge and perception of the matter... it was seeking validation. He still questions the decision he made.

He shouldn't.

Relationship Note on Laric

I see through you, Prince, no matter how much you wanted to hide it. More than an answer, you sought validation - an indication that you made the right choice.

You made the only choice.

Relationship Note on Mathias

Dear Me,

Today I met common man who is also a knight -- a juxtaposition I like rather well. The meeting was brief, but he seemed full of vim and vigor and good spirits. I do wish more people were like him. Those with swords, especially. It's an admirable quality to approach one's work with a positive attitude.

Not sweaty arrogance, mind you, but a firm sense of purpose.

Huzzah to him. I do hope he returns unscathed, or at least makes a good show of dying.

Thoughts on war are simply enervating.

I require a nap.

Warmest Regards,

Me

Southport Square is so quiet now.

The Saik and the Malvici have marched off to war. Due to one thing and another, I have been forbidden to march with them; so I remain in Saik Tower, tending the horses unfit for battle and the messenger birds they did not take. I've practised my archery in the square, and while it's good, I really need to be taught further in how to use the Seed.

I keep think I hear voices. I never knew you could feel alone in the city this way. I read the family histories, I still busy myself about town, and I try to prepare. The Lodge has been riding out often, and I with them, preparing for the siege, and now even before the armies arrive, I feel as though a noose is tightening around me, tugging my hands in and restricting my grasp.

I have faith. I have faith in Petrichor, the Forest King, the Stag Lord, and his message of Dominion. We have a duty to this world, for we reside as guests within it, until our time comes. I have faith in the Triad of Creation, the land, seas and skies of Arvum. All things are held within, from the changeable paths of Lagoma to the nurturing breath of Mangata and the sustaining hand of Petrichor. I have faith in the Pantheon, that together all is possible and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I trust in my lords and ladies, and their judgement, and I hope they return safe, unharmed.

I hope I am here to greet them when they do.

The inevitable siege grows closer, my nerves sing with the song that all warriors face before going into battle. This is the loudest the song has ever been, though contrary to how the first time I heard the song as a boy I was nervous, today I find myself excited, far more then I ought to be.

I hear our newest Knight of Solace has won a tournament. I am certainly happy to see such combat prowess amongst the Knights.

Ours is the victory, hers is the glory.

Relationship Note on Ainsley

I visited Prince Ainsley. His room is a few doors from mine, but he hasn't been leaving it very often if at all and so I went to his room.

He is in deep mourning for the loss of his beloved and for what his loved has suffered though.

I will not go into the details of what happened in the journals, because one day Ainsley will recover enough to read journals again and it might pain him.

But he is loved, by all his Grayson family and Alejandro and all his many friends and by the Iron Guard. We all are praying to the gods that he will pull through and be with us again.

I hear my newest recruit won the Golden Hart Tournament, and with flying colors, while flying /our/ colors! Well, couldn't make an aging knight happier there, you damn project from the Lowers. You did us proud, and will continue to do so, I imagine.

Now use the prestige to get your ass into the Champions and earn a proper paycheck so you can spruce up your gear, I hate continuing to have to pay for it.

War.

Never does anyone who has seen a real battlefield yearn to see another, but here we are. Not because we desire it, but because it is /necessary/. Necessary to fight, and die, and slay men by the thousands, because our faith demands it. Common sense demands it. The Gods demand it. And survival demands it.

Keep this fact close to your chest, those who are left behind in Arx. That this...All of this? It is necessary for all to do their part, including those who will not return. There will be many of those, perhaps including me. That too, might be necessary.

(This journal page is sticky and has many red fingerprints - it's also stuck to someone else's journal entry. Hope they didn't have anything important to say, and good luck putting the page down).

We made strawberry-rhubarb jam the other day. (Serah and I).

Precisely 72 bottles, and used every grain of sugar that the Hundred Cities had to offer, along with a big portion of their honey.

We had intended on using it for our stores. Burying it in the Menagerie with the rest of the supplies but by the time we got there we only had 20 bottles left and one hell of a sugar hangover. We were caught and then had to barter 12 bottles for the Keeper's silence when he discovered us miserably trying to dig holes in the frozen ground.

We have 8 bottles left and I can't say I'm sorry. I never want to eat jam ever again.

On a related note, I could see sound and food now has a different taste all around.

Also on a slightly related note, the striped ass at the Menagerie has become my arch-nemesis. He's eaten something very dear to me - one of Mathias' letters. Just when I reached the last line, he took it. I thought for a moment he was going to ask me to the ball! I now know why they call stubborn men asses. The striped one will be my first victim should our stores run out. I'll keep some strawberry-rhubarb glaze set aside just for him, however as I suspect as a last act of stubborn defiance he will taste /terrible/.

The battle approaches, my preparations are set. I'm teaming up with Lord Michael Bisland in his efforts to evacuate the lower boroughs, and hopefully save as many lives as I can. I am trying not to subject myself to too great a risk, for the sake of those that depend on me, but I refuse to be idle throughout this ordeal.

I hope Calandra listens to sense, and comes to stay with me in the Fidante villa. I can't imagine anywhere safer, though I wish that I could keep all that I wished safe behind these walls. Perhaps I'm selfish. I'll gladly risk myself for those I love, but the moment that I learn those I love are risking themselves...

I pray to the gods for her safe return, and pray that if at the very least, that I'll be allowed to keep my memory. In the meantime, I'll prepare myself, prepare her, and what comes will come.

I'm the one that wished to be a warrior. Now I understand the worry that I'll wrought upon those that care for me in the future. I suppose this fear of loss I'll need to rid myself of. It's a weakness that only stops me from moving forward.
