Many are writing journals about the renewal of the new year, and I honor that, for the change of seasons and Lagoma's grace, and for the new beginnings in your own lives that many of you are claiming or undertaking.

For myself, I am starting this first month off with a crushed foot courtesy of some entertaining hijinx involving an inconveniently placed ladder, a bucket of pitch, and two men carrying an entire sheet of plate glass through the street.

Relationship Note on Edward

An entertaining Lord. I enjoy his company. I need to convince him far more time with me is required.

Relationship Note on Mirari

Dire Mailys is the best Mirari. She does all the manual labour so I don't have too. I've gotten good at filling bottles with wine, though.

Readers,

This week has been a good week. At least I think so. I have exchanged messages with people about the possibility of a patron. The world is full of possibilities.

Relationship Note on Alaric

A difficult king. Learns well and is quite charming. Yes, yes, I can admit when someone has a trait like that. He's on the nicer side of things.

Relationship Note on Tarrant

Darling readers,

I should like you to know one thing - My brother is the best big brother a girl could ever hope to have.

That is all

I received my new hairpins from Mistress Sameera this week. They are blue, and steel, and pointy. They are also set with aquamarines, and go quite well with my outfit, as I had asked. She does excellent work. Did I mention they were pointy? I have decided to start wearing them with the new outfit I had commissioned by Mistress Petal. Blue and white is perfect for the winter season. I just need to remember to get a sturdier wardrobe with a sturdier lock, so the dogs do not destroy everything in it again.

Relationship Note on Leta

I met Dame Leta Broadbent today, after hearing about her exploits in helping to save Vincere and Pietro from rotting on the field after they had died in the siege. I offered her the favor of House Igniseri for the melee in the Tournament of Roses, but Princess Seraphine had already offered favor. I withdrew it, not wanting to conflict with the Princess's favor.

However, I did offer her a like book akin to the favor being offered, for her service in helping to save my brother's bodies from rotting away. She wasn't comfortable for the offer, but I strongly feel that it will help me gain some closure over their deaths. I couldn't help them at their time of most need, I was powerless to do so, but this... this is within my power, and I do hope she claims it at some point.

I almost forgot to write this down, Scholars. Cows eat grass and hay and such things. Folk squeeze the tits on a cow for milk, which can be for drinking or for making cheese and butter. Butter's made mostly by beating the milk a whole lot. Cheese I'm not rightly sure but I think you've got to put some bit of the cow in the milk and wait a while for the milk to dry.

That's about all I know on cows. I don't know if elves got an opinion on them or anything.

It is a new year. It has been for a few days but I haven't written anything in here since. So far it's going well enough, as years can go. Haven't been in any fights this year but I reckon I'll knock the rust off when I fight in the melee, and hopefully knock some folk out too before I get knocked out myself. Other than that, there is not much to tell that will matter for the Archives.

I feel like I should write more but I don't know what. I have a new ring from Mistress Sameera and it's right pretty.

Well, in case in years to come all the cows have vanished, such as what happened to some other beasts, I am writing this down for the Scholars. Cows have got four legs and they come in different colors and some of them got spots and some of them got horns. There's a lot of good eating in all parts of the cow. Also, their skin is good for leather.

I really don't know what to write. All is well.

I met Vanora at the Shrine of the Thirteenth. She is quite an interesting person and has many insights about the Faith. I hope to speak more with her sometime about the faith and such things.

A new year....and spring draws closer each day.

Never before have I been looking so forward to spring. I have begun counting the days.

When you yell at a person for so long you can barely speak the next day.

Seriously, I sound like an old man. A really, really tired old man.

Also, throwing things. When that infuriating person comes over, I'll be sure to put everything away first. I've pried more gems out of Mongoose's mouth than I care to admit. Also stepping on them.

Relationship Note on Katarina

Princess Katarina Valardin,

The next time that you come you will need to have some hot tea blended with Laurent honey and Blackram whiskey. Perhaps this can be when we get together to discuss the possibilities for the winter festival. Also, my wife was murmuring to me regarding her desire to try out various pie recipes. I may require your aid in testing those.

The joust at the Tournament of Roses was grand, indeed. I competed and did all right. My first tilt again Silas, Baron of Whitehawk, ended with me the better. I regret that I faced him first, as it would have been fine if both of us had gone farther to represent Riven. But I was honored to ride against him, and against Sir Steve - a rather adorable Valardin knight - in the next match. I think he was a little afraid of me! But now that I've knocked him down and he's gotten back up again, we will be friends. This generally how I make friends.

My final tilt was against Royal Stablemaster Tristan, and I'm proud just to have tested my lance against his, even though I was unhorsed. He was the winner of the whole joust, coming out on top in the finals against a Valardin knight I did not know, Sir Tarrant Moore. Everyone will know Sir Moore's name now, with how he rode.

It was great fun, and I look forward to the coming melee. I pray Gloria and Limerance bless us with as fine a contest there as we had on the jousting field.

I made it into the Semi-Finals of the Joust before being knocked out by Jael, the younger Lady Laurent. It's exciting, actually. I've never jousted before I started to prepare for this tourney. Not so different from a lance in combat - and yet utterly different. The rules felt wrong. And some of those people were tremendous talents. I feel privileged to have made it as far as I did.

Also, I got King Alaric's favor. How great is THAT?

Almost took first place in the Tournament of Roses joust! I should never have given Sir Tarrant Moore my permission to smack the Voice of House Laurent.

In all honesty though it was loads of fun and I enjoyed myself immensely. I am happy to see one of our vassals making a name for himself, even if it's going to take a lot of mead to make me stop feeling like I was run over by a horse.

While I did manage to place for the finals in the Jousting Tournament, I'm afraid that my focus on being on my feet came back to haunt me - I beat my opponent in the first bracket, and then was promptly unhorsed.

Thankfully, I was unhorsed by Sir Tristran Crucible, who went on to win the whole thing, so I can't feel -too- bad about losing.

I saw a lot of impressive bouts today. I am sure Gloria smiled on us all, and Limerance found joy in the many bonds of favour exchanged.

Despite the lack of prowess I possess in horsemanship and especially jousting, I felt the need to represent the Fidante house in the Tournament of Roses. I took one of the fine Fidante mares, paid a carpenter to paint some lances in Fidante colors and entered. I managed to stay horsed, but I still lost after breaking three lances against a man who looked as if his life were spent around horses. In all, I did no better or worse than... say Prince Talen.
