There isn't enough silver in the world to convince me to abolish my pettiness.

The struggles of the marginalized are always going to be greater than the struggles of the privileged.

But poverty doesn't abolish pettiness any more than great wealth. Pontificate at your own peril. At the end of the day, it's just as frivolous as bitching about what someone talks about in their spare time.

I have returned to Arx, and it seems I've missed quite a few things while I remained in Aviaron's Peak. The coming days promise to be busy indeed.

Several times I've heard this come up today, and I have to say that it amuses me. First, I'll admit it, I was one of those talking about hair color the other night at the Ambassador Salon. First it was used to indicate a particular individual, then it devolved into discussion of what preferences people had towards it.

To my knowledge, and I admit I left shortly after the talk began, it was not a long or even in depth conversation. The sort of momentary frivolity that often helps to make hard times easier to deal with.

I laugh a lot, I take my fun where I can get it, but I feel that if someone is only judging an entire social group by one momentary overheard conversation that I want to suggest to them that they try digging further. Would I judge an entire group by what I witness in a five or ten minute observation at the Murder? No. If I did, I'd name myself a fool for doing so.

None of us, not a single one, is only one dimension, we are not flat automatons that can only do one thing with our entire lives. Everyone should remember that, I think. Those overhearing conversations, and those that also seek to make commentary on others thoughts put to paper. We all are more than mere words.

And to make certain that I retain my frivolous reputation, I shall now go and get thoroughly drunk and run up and down the beach naked.

Relationship Note on Leona

I first spoke to Lord Commander Leona Thrax on something of a whim, a combination of a social call and it-can't-hurt-to-ask shot in the dark. I have now found her to be a mentor, a teacher, and a friend. I have done the morning drills with the King's Own; the Lord Commander has run the Gauntlet. (I had a better time, in case you are curious. But she did a climb up the final rope which was better than any I have seen before!)

In some ways, speaking to Leona is like having the great Lord Commander Dayne Valardin's teachings passed down to me. That is an incredible gift, and one I am thankful to her for.

Why must you all persist in taking my insulting journals as invitation to write me private letters attempting to befriend me?!

If you are reading this, I do not want to be your friend.

Hello book,

It has been some time since I have been to shore for this length of time. I must admit, I had forgotten some of the comforts here, not that the Serpents Tide isn't well suited for me, but the people here are a delight. I look forward to meeting more of them, for alas, with what looms I am not sure I will have many more days in this life.

As an observation, I have found that those who claim to be righteous are typically those who are the first to form their hands into fists, the first ones to shout down dissenters, and the first to bully others into compliance.

It never ceases to amaze me how the nobility can never resist the urge to defend themselves against powerless commoners who they deem to be useless and inconsequential.

My heart bleeds for you, you poor, maligned creatures. How awful that someone said something mean about you.

Blood and crustini do not mix. Luckily Marcos was there to help me patch our people up.

May not be so generous to those who tried to kill my niece. They can be fodder for my trainees. They'll get medical care, just not from me.

What's more disturbing than blood at the dinner table was traitors in our house, but I suppose opportunists will strike when they see opportunity. That sounded better in my head, I think.

Relationship Note on Ann

My father's sister, a woman more inclined to bookishness than most. But she applies herself rigorously to the rooting out of information and knowledge, and she has a quick wit and a good sense of humor. I like her a lot, and I'm glad to see her back in the City and getting involved. We need her mind now more than ever.

I was the daughter of a servant and an unknown father, but am accorded the designation of "silk". While there certainly are nobles who care little beyond what they're going to wear at the next party, there are also nobles who understand that the privilege of their birth accords them the responsibility of caring for their people.

While I am not a frequent visitor to the salon, I have gone there. There are times, even in the most dire circumstances, folk of any class need to take a moment to breathe, to talk of inconsequential things, and to push the dark aside. It doesn't mean that they're ignoring the trials that lay ahead of them. Even in the midst of terrible wars, soldiers, when given the opportunity, take time out for the little things in life.

So quite frankly, anybody sitting in the Ambassador Salon discussing hair color is A) not involved in the decision making anyway and keeping out of the way of the folk who are, or B) spending a little bit of time relaxing and talking about hair color after hours or even days of research, planning, being involved, or otherwise supporting the efforts of others.

I have no patience for the useless. I have even less for the judgemental. And while it would be easy for me to assume that all they do is choose to point fingers, I will not do so. Instead I will ask: what is it YOU are doing to help the Compact?

Getting shot with a bolt in the shoulder really hurts. I don't recommend it.

Luckily the would be assassin has been apprehended. I am fortunate to keep such strong and fast acting company. Another reminder of why I am so proud to have the family and extended family that I do.

write about the moon
a tale in many parts -
night after night
the darkness slices
the pale roundness
until she curves -
half, a quarter,
a fraction of
what she
was.
