Relationship Note on Edain

To His Grace, Prince Edain (marked by a small tab, if you please, for the Scholar who accepts this journal - please do not remove, even if it does ruin the uniformity):

I accept your words, and admire you for committing them to writing. There is nothing harder in this world than accepting criticism (and I am well aware that I am not always kind about mine), and nothing more praiseworthy than attempting to do something constructive with it as you walk forward into the future.

I see the Nox'Alfar are in the journals again and on the tongues of everyone. I must say there is some degree of perverse joy to sit at a table with ones great grandfather many times over. Not too many can I suppose. I wonder if he looks as handsome as he did the day he married Queen Alarice.

I'll wait for the proof of the Nox'alfar negotiating in bad faith after we broke our own treaty. Don't worry, I've got a whole bottle of whiskey with me. It'll last a while.

You are right Legate. I resolved that I would own my failings during the first round of renewing the treaty, I am am letting my distrust waver that resolved. I will be better.

Igniseri for the wine.
Mistress Petal for the Pyreweave.
Guildmaster Joscelin for the rings.

Blessed Spirits, I'm getting excited!

(A series of sketches or rough doodles of cats. The artist has no real eye for proportion, or composition, or shading, or much of anything as far as art goes. But at least you can mostly tell these are cats. There are cats with spots, and cats with stripes, and black cats. Some of the cats are just doing cat things, like running around or eating small creatures, but a few of the cats have crowns or helmets or are armed with spears and bows. There's even a little cat castle with cats in the battlements.)

This is just a picture I drew from my head, it's not something that exists, for any Scholars that read this a hundred years from now. But a whole kingdom of cats would be a sight to see, that's for sure.

I find it amusing that anyone thinks the Nox negotiated in good faith at any level.

Still the Commander, and he is still doing well for the Iron Guard. It is nice to know he has been keeping on track with everything within the Compact. Also wanted to thank him for his guidance since I joined with the Guard. Something I didn't ever think I would be doing, but he makes it worth it with our ventures!

So much going on with people at the moment, and I can't seem to figure out what to do besides my investigations. Anyways I'm hopeful to be of some use to people in any case, but recently I've been busier than I would like. I should work on that.

All I can say is that I am not perfect. And that distrust can sometimes run deep. I would never wish to say anything that dishonored Lord Commander Dayne's sacrifice. I will pray at the cathedral tonight that he will forgive my words.

Let us not forget who it was who hosted the Nox'Alfar when they came to the city, and allowed their guests to be insulted and threatened, blocked their guests from seeking honorable redress for these grievances, and then spent months claiming in public that the Nox'Alfar never intended to negotiate honestly or sincerely, despite the fact that they have never broken any formal commitment they have ever made to the Compact, and in fact gifted several king's ransoms worth of expensive items even when no treaty obligated it.

As odd and often violent and unpredictable as they are, when it comes to "needing to earn trust", there are other names which, based on their behavior, I would put far higher on the list.

I like cats. I don't know what's going on in their heads, and to tell the truth they're (the word assholes has been struck out) not terribly nice for the most part, but they are pretty and they're fun to watch. Also they catch mice and such and they guard the house at night from some other sorts of unnatural creatures, as I see it, though sometimes they make a bloody mess of bird guts and such all over. Now, you never know when they'll rub up against you or give you a scratch for your troubles, but that's just in their nature. I don't suppose you can hold it against them. I've a cat myself, Meowlarice, and she's good company. I'm not sure I'd feel the same if she could talk, and I don't reckon I trust her, but she is what she is.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd write something more about cats, for future Scholars, in case cats vanish or folk forget about cats in years to come.

Nierzan's a professional contrarian. He's wrong about elves and Heralds, but I think his primary intention was to get precisely the reaction he got.

That said, while we're quite cognizant that every Grayhope has not been a shining beacon, I'm a bit concerned about the implication that your average noble family has a better balance of good or evil. I'm not qualified to weigh that! But I'd be happy to have a conversation about it.

My reaction was perfectly reasonable. My diction perhaps less so.

Let this be a lesson to the youngsters. Do not pick up writing implements when you are in your cups.

But my sober reflection remains in league with my less sober response. Please donate to our hostess' charity of choice what you find reasonable, or preferably outlandish, for what amusement my antics provided and for the very minor damages done to me.

We face challenges ahead - may our human failings guide us to better actions to help one another to survive and flourish, before, during, and after any possible hostilities.

And it was explicitly pointed out it in the very first words written that I do not judge the entire family by the actions of one man. I just found it interesting that the kinsman of one who chose to align with enemies far more dangerous to the Compact was choosing to point a finger in the direction of those who've far more in balance of what we deem good or evil.

The latest Nox'alfar marriage was one of a long line of them over several centuries. So, I mean, the idea that they tried to destroy the Compact and then set up a marriage instead is just...what? Listen, the Nox can be crazy and make people super uncomfortable, but the idea that they're infiltrating our society instead of just renewing a practice that already existed for five hundred years is...odd. They haven't been trying to destroy the Compact??

We broke our treaty with them. Because we were misled, yes, and it was a horrific tragedy, but we're not in much position to demand they try to earn our trust back. We interrupted their most sacred ritual and made them vulnerable to total annihilation by doing so. Like, we threatened the survival of their entire race. And yet they gave us multiple chances to reopen negotiations with them. The first time, it didn't go well, and they left insulted. The second, the new treaty was made.

The idea that the Nox'alfar were in liege with Brand or the Silence is super ridiculously false, because they're actually the mortal enemy of the agents of the Silence and Oblivion. The destruction of the Nox'alfar was the _literal purpose_ of agents manipulating the Compact into breaking our treaty.

So, like, if you want to be uncomfortable, just be accurate about it.

We all have sins in our past, whether they are our own, or whether they are those of our family and ancestors. Some are large, some are great. Some of us benefited for the struggles of the Compact. Some of our families gained piles of silver from misfortune. Some of us were granted great power by the workings of our enemies. I do not believe these actions define who we are - especially when they are wholly the doing of other people. That is not what the Queen of Endings and Mother of Beginnings shows us. That is not the change Lagoma brings. To question the commitment of the Grayhope family to the Compact because one of its members takes issue with the history of the Nox'alfar - a history marked by blood and violation of the Laws of Limerance was we understand them - seems unfair, unkind, and against the virtues of the Gods. Even if one member of the family was not faithful to the Compact. After all, many of this family's members dutifully serve the Gods and the Compact.

It would be on par with questioning the commitment of a noblewoman whenever she disagreed with the majority, simply because she was first made a Marquessa by the Rex'alfar.

Relationship Note on Edain

When Lord Commander Dayne Valardin gave his life in an honor duel to acknowledge the guilt of the Compact when we broke the treaty with the Nox'alfar, through strength and honor and determination he gave us the chance to start diplomatic relations with them without the sins of the past coming forward to haunt us. He leveled the playing field by acknowledging our guilt and paying for it as honor demands.

When the Nox'alfar came to us in good faith to re-negotiate the treaty and we treated them abysmally and insulted them until they left the city, that too was our own fault. And yes, many good men and women died. I know this better than most. But again, the Nox'alfar showed their willingness to ignore our fumbling attempts at diplomacy and returned to the negotiating table in good faith.

And so I understand that many will be uncomfortable with our allies. They are not always a comfortable people. But to expect them to constantly be looking to earn our trust ignores the fact that they have carried themselves with honor while we have not - twice now in living memory. Instead of worrying about what they are doing for us, perhaps we should be asking how we can work together to build our future in similar directions, and to avoid dishonoring ourselves a third time in three years.
