Relationship Note on Sina

My last correspondence from Archscholar Sina Godsworn:

Date: 10/9/1014 AR

Lady Lailah,

I will be leaving the city for a time, heading to Tremorus to accompany the Seraceni and Pravosi
ships to investigate the rumors of Eurusi attempts to recruit the Shavs there. It seems my
particular presence is needed in this instance. I wished to let you know before my departure, so
that you can be prepared for my extended absence. I hope that you will be able to continue your
work as Magister of the Academy in my absence, and should you have a need for guidance, I have also
informed Legate Bianca of my intention to go, as well as Sir Preston. I suspect I shall return in
one piece. Until then, may the Gods keep you.

In faith and friendship,

Sina

Relationship Note on Sina

I am a bit late in doing this. I am writing down the speech that I gave a the Remembering Archscholar Sina event that I held within the Society of Explorers, with a minor edit or three.

I knew Archscholar Sina when she was just Sina, a young woman in the employ of my cousin, Princess Alarissa Thrax. She was young, bright, and full of zest and wonder of the world then. I knew that she had a keen sense of adventure, and took the Explorer's test, along with Alarissa, just for fun to see if she could pass it. She was both delighted and surprised that she passed the test and I invited her to join the Explorers. Since that time, she had become rather proficient in helping many an Explorer follow their dreams.

Then came the call from the King to research what happened to his father, for he had heard a rumor that Alaric III was still alive. He set all of the Grayson to work on this task. I reached out to Sina, who had risen in rank of Archscholar over the years, with the hopes that she could help me. Not only was she a wonderful resource to the research I completed, but it also turned out that she had a mystery of her own to solve that went along with my research. So, for many years, we worked together to unravel the mystery of Alaric III's disappearance, and with that, helping her to uncover the truth about the White Singer, who serves at the Dune Emperor - Alaric III's - side.

I will miss the long nights of research we spent together, and going over our various crazy theories. I will miss her caring and her compassion. I will miss her wit and determination. She was, I think, one of my very dearest of friends, and I am so, so very happy to see the impact she had on so many others' lives, as represented by your presence here this evening. I hope that she has inspired the same spirit in all of those disciples that follows after her, and that her spirit runs through the Scholars and everyone else she's inspired over the years. She was a very brave woman, who made a very brave, and difficult decision to try and make the world a better place and protect many people in the process.

To Archscholar Sina. May we always remember her.

Relationship Note on Sina

There was a time when you were a servant. A handmaiden to Thrax. You have served Princess' before you served the Gods. Most forget that before the Dominus, the Legates, Archlectors and godsworn gave of themselves to the Gods, they were aught else. It's strange to think of that.

It was strange to sit before you in your office with your mantle and remember the way you brushed my hair.

I have always prided myself on my ability to adapt. From Grayson to Valardin, from Valardin to Thrax. Without fail I have found my place, found the way to thrive. It was harder with Thrax. Without you, I do not know that I would have managed so as well as I presume that I have.

I remember with eyes closed, my hair in your hand and the comb going through it, you filling me in on the small nuances that came with this people. The expectations of the traditionalists, with that of the progressives. Of who in the house below the stairs to rely upon, who to watch, who was not getting their proper due. When you rubbed ungents on my skin to keep it soft and spoke to me of the house and how it ran before. Of life before Victus.

You were there for the painful victories and silver-tinged sorrows in my life. Of holding me in my grief when I asked one that I loved to sacrifice himself to ensure the return of another that I love. When it happened in truth instead of a possibility. It was your forehead pressed to mine and your fingers twisted in mine in the early hours of bringing the line of Thrax into the world and telling me it was okay to yell and yelling with me while knee deep in saltwater before the gods until he could get away from duty to take your place near the end of it all. You helped to take the pain and bear me through it.

You took the knife and split my breast to expose my heart when you told me your wish. You'd warned me. We'd talked about it in the late nights in the library after returning from obligations. You had warned me many times. And yet the knife. I begged him to let me the one that walked with you into the Cathedral and sever the oath to Thrax, see it reforged anew to the faith.

You were a thrall. You bought and earned your freedom and then you remained in the house to serve when you had every right to leave it and all that it represented behind. you served Donella before she left to stand at the side of Redrain. You turned to serve me when I came to stand at the side of Thrax.

You-

You are gone. This comb will be placed in the alcove. Beside the portrait of my brother, Vance's ribbon, Driskell's rum and the piece of marble from Darrow's statue. Knowing, it still hurts. I am sorry I could walk with you like we had before. But there were always paths that I took that you could not. Sometimes, we cannot walk them together.

I can only hope that I see you again, before it's my own turn to walk a road that cannot be walked with any other. I will make sure that my children know of the thrall who become the Archscholar and that nothing, is unobtainable if you have the will to see it through.

Archscholar Sina will be missed, although it would have been nicer, Scholar, if the person who was doing the aiming had missed.

She was with me on a venture out into the world, and she was one of the people who was very happy when I stabbed something in front of her; I don't know if she realised that she helped confirm my choice was the right one, but she did.

She's definitely going to be missed. Not least because she'd have been called on as a character witness if I need one.

Relationship Note on Sina

The first time I met Sina was when I killed her father and sunk his ship to the bottom of the sea. He was a pirate and his execution the proper punishment for his crimes.

Yet his daughter was not guilty of the crimes of the father. I took her back to Maelstrom, where she found her place within the staff. I missed the years that saw her become a Godsworn and Archscholar, having returned when she had already become all these things.

Now, she is dead. Another name to add to the evergrowing list. Another to remember. Another.

May her future beginnings prove happier.

Relationship Note on Sina

The last time Archscholar Sina and I spoke at length, I left her company wondering how different my life might've been if she'd held that position when I was nearing the end of my pursuit for Discipleship. Attentive and warm, hers was an easy lead to follow.

We had so much more left to discuss, so much left to do. Some of the threads were mere curiosity that need no immediate tending, but one, at least, demands further action. I hope I'm able to find something worthwhile to do with it.

Relationship Note on Sina

It is the morning of 12/26, one thousand and fourteen years after the reckoning. By all accounts Sina Godsworn, Archlector of Vellichor, has been murdered. I made a promise to her, one which must be filled. Tomorrow. Today, we remember a woman with a sunlight smile and a mind of gracious and complex knowledge.

I had to travel to Pieros to meet her. She came there despite the Skal'dajans, despite the distance, despite its strangeness. She came to learn and to help and she will always have the love of a war-weary people for whom the pagentry of Sanctum and Arx are as foreign as snow.

Make no mistake: this was no happenstance attack. Sina knew what was to come. And yet still when she learned I had a question, she invited me into her home to present me the answer before she- before we would not have that chance. I served us tea, and I thought she might die of embarrassment to see her guest playing at hostess. We had tea while her cat Sebastian, no relation, slept and we talked about the politics of the world.

Her mind was an archive. In any other person she might have been a recluse or an outcast, happy with her books. But Sina Godsworn was a leader, so brave and so true. And so I conclude, that this was her choice. She knew the evils of this world and she did not cower from them. May we all remember her example.

Let those who wield poisoned blades trip down a steep flight of stairs, into a mildly deep ravine, and land with the pointed end buried in their gut, while crows wait, though not long enough, for them to die of it, so they can feed.

You deserved better than this.

Relationship Note on Sina

When I first came to Arx, Archscholar Sina wrote to me with words of welcome. She had been very close to Prisila and a good friend to my family, as she is to this day. At the symposium, where many gathered to discuss the war with Skal'daja, she offered the resources of the Archives of Vellichor, and her own stores of knowledge to aid the leaders of the Compact. Her hair is sable, and it is often adorned with beads of burnished brass. Her skin is fair, her voice clear and steady, neither shrill nor overly deep. She is stately in her demeanor, though I have seen her angry once - not in the blustering manner of those prone to wrath - but a species of frustration for one persisting in ignorance. She can be very warm around those she trusts. Her eyes are silver: a unique metallic hue that add to the sense that she sees things hidden since the foundation of the world.

Sina has honored me with her council, and sailed with me to the Saffron Chain, far from the safety of Arx, to apply her intellect to the protection of our realm. When in Tremorous, and those bribed by the pretender sought our lives to lay at the feet of their new master, the priestess stood with eminent courage, wielding her own gleaming blade beside her Templars.

Against the enemies of the Compact, who seek relentlessly to deprive humanity of all choice, all history, art and meaning, the Archscholar holds aloft the light of knowledge. I have been raised to be a man of action, and by experience find it difficult to trust, or to accept gifts given freely, nor am I one to watch idly as a friend risks her life. Yet I continue to learn from the wisest scholar among us, and find myself uttering fervent prayers that, however unworthy the petitioner, may yet still reach the ears of those who might shield our great hope amid her trials, or see her light transcend the mere season of one life and, like the stars, illuminate the way for all.

As a knight of the road, I spend so little time in the Archives or staring at the pages of books, so when someone willingly and generously assists me in gathering the much needed knowledge to move forward with a journey, I am truly grateful. Archlector Sina has offered me insight and understanding that very well may be the key I needed. Even if it isn't, what I learned may open an entirely new world of adventure.

Now to find the book that the waves can read made of stone and salt!

It was part of a private discussion I had with the King. His idea, but I didn't really protest.

It does tend to confuse some people though, so let me try to clarify. There's not really any such thing as having diplomatic relationships with Nefer'khat. Nefer'khat is not one kingdom, but hundreds, and from what I understand they can and do compete with each other. If a representative did sail into our harbor, it would almost certainly not be a representative of Nefer'khat (although I suppose that's vaguely possible), but a representative of one of the Primasens, and an agreement with one is not an agreement with the rest. About the most I can say about any kind of diplomatic relationship with all of Nefer'khat, at least from what I've been told, and what I've been able to find, is that it's not a good idea to insult one of the Primasens, because you risk every single one of them taking offense to it.

That said, yeah, I've not heard, seen, or found anything to suggest that any of the Primasens have ever tried to meddle with the Compact. More the opposite, I've seen an attitude that they prefer to be hands off when it comes to Arvum. The most I've seen is that some groups of Khati came to help fight in the Reckoning, and at least one of them needed a lot of convincing to even do that.

Relationship Note on Sina

Without arguing in favor of the embassy, I do offer a slight correction: we do not have a friendly relationship with the Nefer'khat. We don't have any relationship with them. As far as I know, no one in Arvani has had contact with them since Prince Cerdic the Sunset Wanderer. Although Prima Shard has my greatest respect, she herself has no contact with the Nefer'khat.

Of course, that also means that we certainly have no adversarial relationship with them, either. In fact I believe that the Primasen of Nefer'khat have largely vowed to avoid interference in our affairs entirely. This does make them far different than Cardia and Jadairal.

Again, this doesn't signify my support for the embassies in any way, but we should go forth with correct information - something that is notably hard to come by, when it comes to the Nefer'khat, so I also emphasize that the Archscholar has my fullest respect.
