Relationship Note on Brianna

The result of the duel had nothing to do with your age, but rather the judgment of the gods upon the one for whom you fought, nor does it diminish the glory you've earned with your courage and skill. Thank you for taking the field on my behalf, Lady Brianna.

Relationship Note on Harald

I have heard the phrase "labor of love" many times before, but until now I don't think I ever really understood its meaning. With the Harald Grimhall Naval Academy now open and the first classes getting ready to begin, I do now. This school will mean a great deal to the future of my people, and more personally, serve as a testament to my father's legacy. I am certain he would have been proud to see it, and he deserves it, having taught many among my generation of nobles about our tradition of naval excellence, not just his own sons. My satisfaction in seeing it done is immense.

There are many people who deserve recognition for this. Duchess Vanora Grimhall, Countess Carita Darkwater, Lady Katya Grimhall, Lord Erik Grimhall, Count Turo Navegant, Baroness Lucita Saik, and Baron Edward Stormbreak all played important parts in this project, and have my gratitude as not just a Duke, but as a son seeking to honor his father.

The Academy of War deserves special thanks, though. This idea took root when my father still lived, right after I joined that organization, as a result of a conversation with the head of it at the time, Marquis Kael Keaton. And once we were ready to break ground, Natalia Whisper worked hard on their behalf to assist us in getting it constructed and finding instructors. I look forward to seeing what comes of the students sponsored by the Academy of War who will be coming to us for education in naval tactics and strategies.

There is that duel over with. It seems that all concerned comported themselves with honour and dignity.

The Champions fought well, honouring Gloria and those they fought for.

It seems perhaps strange to say, but I cannot imagine any less.

Relationship Note on Syd

I would like to clarify my good friend.

My footmen met their peril from misadventure.

Not from poisonous crypts or boons of fire or whatever else your fanciful imagination has dreamt up.

Just wait until I tell you the tale of the ladies maid and the singed cat.

I must also pen my thanks, insight and appreciation for those who travelled with the diplomatic entourage who ensured we were safe. Lord Santi Malvici provided such a good presence to ensure that tensions would never escalate.

To ensure though that such a respected group of diplomats, including a Prince, were safe. Lady Miranda Rubino-Zaffria, my second cousin, and the young sister Lady Thea Malvici were responsible for overseeing bodyguards assigned to us. It was so eye opening to see the little sister, one who I have doted on as seeming so young, learning from the Lady Miranda battlefield tactics and applying her command to them. Truly, Lady Thea's grown up and continuing to in such a short space of time while in the City.

At no point did it seem that, beyond mere tensions, it would escalate and for all three I must thank them

It may have been seen and known that quite recently, I and several other valuable diplomats from the Lyceum along with the Lady Mabelle Laurent travelled to hope to bring an end to the brushwar that was flaring up between House Fournier and House Daveiga. Truly, I am so thankful to those who travelled with us to keep us safe - and those who supported the cause. Prince Arman, applying himself as an elder statesmen truly showed how valuable experience is when dealing with conflicting houses. Truly, my Prince Velenosa, you are an inspiration I imagine to many young students of diplomacy across the Compact.

I am also so thankful and pleased in answering the posting seen from Marquessa Lycoris Hawkmour on her generous offer of helping anyone who wished to bring peace to the growing conflicts. The Marquessa's introduction to Kamaria helped us understand what the common folk, who would have been caught up in the middle of any conflict, wanted. In turn allowing us as negotiators to press for peace - for the good of their common folk. It was so pleasing as well to see my beloved Kaia being so charming to the Lycene people and, in turn, earning some admiration by them. Little more could fill my heart with happiness than seeing such admiration for her.

Though glowing praise, for the negotiating side, must be reserved and given to Lady Mabelle Laurent. Invited along to help work with Count Fournier, the Lady Laurent did truly excel at balancing her charm and the practicum of her diplomacy. Showing such care for the innocent and, upon hearing from Kamaria's work the common folk's desire for peace, made such a convincing case.

While we may not have achieved a full peace, we are under a cease fire, this gives all time and space for amendments to be made without further conflict in the background.

The Wolf happened upon the grove,
Prey long gone, the Raven to rove.
Circling them both, long gone the prey,
How quick the predator turns to stray.

I finally gave Messere Modi what he so l rightly deserved. I'm only sorry it took so long to get all the details right, but once we did I think it turned out quite well.

I'm going to need a reason to do it again. He's quite the conversationist. Converser? I've been drinking. Either way I had a great time.

Relationship Note on Kincade

So there I was, draped across the shrine of Gloria, tears falling, begging her to help me.

And then, there he was, Lord Kincade Blanchard, asking me if there was anything he could do for me.

Gods work in mysterious ways.

I'm forever grateful for the intervention.

He provided a good ear to listen and a strong shoulder to cry upon.

At the risk of sound like a sullen, unpious brat, I am very displeased with my performance at the duel today. I keep going over the events in my head, analyzing every move and step, and I can't figure out where my weakness was. Am I just getting old?

I've been impressed more and more by the fine make of Oathlands steel. There is something at home with simple, good quality metal. It's not tinted red, it's not plated in diamonds, it's not got an elven myth attached to it... Just good craftsmanship from a good mind. I was never very comfortable wielding swords. Axes were more common on ships, they served many purposes. To hook yourself when boarding, to carve through wood, or split a shield in twain. I have never been one for finesse and grace in combat when enough strength can smash both.

Yet I have found myself taken by the nobility of the greatsword. As a symbol and a complimentary to my fighting style. Parrying is rusty, but I manage. The difference is mutable grip is also nicely counter balanced by having such a large edge to work with.

It's been months since I've been delivered this sword and I still find nice things to say about it. This weapon is quickly becoming my favorite. I wonder if Astrid would like a greatsword as well. When she's older, of course.

If SOME people want to be reincarnated as a HUMAN, maybe that's FOR THEM TO KNOW OR REMEMBER AND NONE OF MY BUSINESS OR CONCERN.

This Tyrval impression brought to you by a surfeit of messengers, people who forget -yet again- that to remember in full a prior life is to go mad, and by the letter R.

A study of Loyalty, Duty, and Obedience
May this study bring me greater understanding
Written in Penance, Sparte Grayfellow

(The remains of this journal entry are a complicated and occasionally conficting series of notes on what the three concepts mean in relation to the worship of Limerance, making reference to the Laws of Limerance, the prayers associated with Limerance, occasionally to overlapping tenants of Gloria, and recent relevant sermons by the faithful that were recorded. There is no conclusion beyond the three being distinct. The notes are a collection for study and comparison in a hurried hand rather than a determination - something that could perhaps be refined given more time)
