Relationship Note on Darren

I would follow my High Lord into the jaws of the Abyss itself, to borrow his words, if he asked. I have been incredibly fortunate to meet no few leaders in the Compact, and each has their own way of leading. Some of them, I might also follow, but with Darren? I suppose I must admit some bias. We've had our disagreements over the years, of course, as family is prone to do. Leading the North is no easy task and he balances the will of his people with the will of the world so well. I sincerely admire him for that ability.

The dinner last night was a triumph, though my cousin delivered some news that nobody could have been expecting. Lady Aahana and their daughter have been discovered after having been thought dead these last two years. I wonder what stories she'll have to tell.

I also discovered that there are uses for chocolate of which I'd never imagined.

This is a new word I learned: cacophony. A word I did not know when deafened by the many voices raised in many passions, my first weeks here with the ringing in my head of too many paths. Arvum is a roar, a storm, of many voices. You are cacophony. I did not see the nation, the one made of many, until now. This is a new phrase I learned: to call your banners. Now the storm is one.

We are bound not by breath but by salt,
shore to shore and blood to blood.

The ground is soft again
ready for the plunging hand
the seed, the sprout,
ready for the dream
of what comes next.
I will make a blanket of it
this soil and this dream
and drawing it over my head
I wait for my harvest.

So I got to go play at what I do for a living, Scholar. It was very fun, getting to demonstrate something to applause that usually gets a man a bad name if anyone sees it in public.

Strange, just how many activities that could cover. There was another man involved, yes, and my wife was nowhere to be seen - but I did bring something home for her, so it's not like she's not meant to know.

A small get together that was social, with a pool, and plenty of entertainment. Yet another successful event, may you have many more. And don't forget, a Lady only turns 20 7 times in her life.

Philosophers and scholars have oft lamented that violence is evil, and that whatever the cause it is unjustified morally.

I have oft lamented that such wise words come from men who have been never been a slave and desperate break his chains.

Violence aimed at the recovery of human dignity and equality cannot be judged as similar to violence aimed at maintaining discrimination and oppression.

Spring! I can smell the frost melting and I see the new life trying already to push past the frost. Everything feels like a breath held in anticipation. There's so much to do!

It is nearing five years since I came back to Arx and decided to stay, and what an amazing five years those have been.

Here's to another five!

The clutches of winter have loosened her icy grasp and sudden blooms the petaled treasures like Gild's treasury as spring comes gently in. And with spring come new opportunities as banners are called and heralds sent throughout the lands.

Across the mountains and over the hills, Dragon’s Song we hear your call. Seraph and paladins, knights and priests, Faith and steel, White City won’t fall. As highlord and banners ride from the west, all will behold Yilbegan’s furious roar.

Sisters, your time is approaching. A sleeping dragon's rest is disturbed and it's time soon for you to rise. I'll do my very best to see you get home. To see as many get home as possible.

Relationship Note on Drake

These bruises are going to take at least a week to start to fade, which will make for an interesting few looks at the pool party coming up. However, I will not bemoan a single one knowing I earned each properly in a spar against an opponent who did not hold back on account of anything. It wasn't even remotely an even match - can I blame adjusting to new armor and an unfamiliar weapon for my my inability to land a single blow? But I can take some pride in knowing I made Lord Drake work for his win.

Thank you for the opportunity to test my limits. They're farther than I suspected.

After a conversation with Raja and Svana, I realized that I hadn't looked in on the other mothers and families I've attended since the moment in the Shrine. So today, I took a little bit of time to walk through the rain and the sunlight (ah, spring!) and check in on the little ones I'd been blessed to handle first.

Beyond the smiles and the babies and the hugs (and the food!), there was nothing. Nothing exciting, nothing wrong, nothing abnormal. -Nothing-. Fat babies that slept through the night, rested mothers with ample milk and clean, well-healed bodies, no colic, no sore bits, nothing that couldn't be changed with an adjustment of diet (don't eat broccoli or eat too much dark chocolate and drink chamomile at bedtime).

Boring. Nothing. Fat babies. Healthy mothers.

Spring flowers are starting to peek out from puddles of slush, or is puddles the right name for the patches of melting snow? Right term or not, it turns to icky mud for a while then is replaced by the grass starting to grow.. or flowers... or herbs. I greet spring with joy even as there is a trace of sadness watching the ice sculptures melt away. Perhaps someone, if he has time, will remake one next winter with the children portrayed another year older. (Yes, that was a blatant hint for Prince Sebastian to indulge the children again, should he read this. They are so delighted at his skill and the humor he showed. Maybe instead of three, just one, a little one would do when winter comes again, honorary Unka Bas.)

Relationship Note on Ida

I'm going to be spending more time with Dame Ida Ferron soon. I mean, she said she was going to let me know when Sir Preston contacted her again. But I'll probably see her before then! I need to know how to make the best nails in the entire Compact. And possibly some other things.

Winter hangs heavy for some. The ice and snow brings spirits low. For those who suffer with the cold, it can be a difficult thing.

But the beauty of Arx, if you are distracted enough, is that you can blink and all at once it's spring.

Whiskey. I can always count on you for whiskey. I look forward to so much more whiskey in the future. It's not the terribly stupid and dangerous things we do that will kill me, you know. It's the whiskey.
