The first committee meeting has proved to be exceptionally productive, and I know I chose right in cohosts. It's a thrilling time and early in the planning stage but this is something I deeply enjoy. I'd almost forgotten how much. Soon. Soon, I will reveal the first place prize and revel in the collective gasps of the City. I do not do anything by half measures.

Be forewarned, my lord. It will itch more than the worst poison oak you could imagine. For at least a week, possibly more. I am unsure on the beard hair, but the leg hair will itch fiercely!

It's been over a year since I swore fealty to my sister's house and nearly that long since I was tasked with guardianship of this.. reckless turtle. I originally asked for a bear - a bearatorium, more specifically - and was given the task of proving myself responsible first with a turtle and secondly, should the turtle thrive... with a dog.

Having only gone missing ONCE, Responsibility the turtle is STILL ALIVE. Some might argue EVEN MORE alive seeing as how there are TWO of him, now. Golly, I hope that closet of mirrors off of Mydas's former quarters doesn't have anything to do with this. Not my problem! I'm well on the way to my goal. ..I don't really want a dog, though.

I'm compiling dossiers on all of the lands of the world. I'd love to be able to go on expeditions around the world. I have scant notes based on what scraps of information I get from things like reports on the Assembly of Peers. In the reports I am struck by how many books the emissary from Cardia said they could send. Was it hyperbole when he mentioned upwards of twelve thousand volumes comprising the Codex of Cardian Law? He said it would take a month for volumes one through nine hundred or so to reach us by caravel, but that the rest would take longer for all the time it would take for scribes to copy them. I do not know how legal systems work. Maybe some small part of their law is referenced frequently and hence they keep more copies of those volumes to hand?

Scholar Grimkin wrote things I found detestable. His views were so distant from my own that I cannot accurately measure that distance.

I know there is a weight upon my shoulders for my past actions. I say this regardless.

Scholar Grimkin's death was not just. It was murder. Those who killed Scholar Grimkin are criminals, and will be treated as such when found.

If any of my friends or enemies or just strangers read my journals... Why would you? Anyway, if you do? Do me a favor and send Legate Aureth a message telling him you love him. The man works his ass off and needs some love.

Bonus points if you send him a bad pun while doing it.

I'm guessing by the unanswered missives that I've sent that I should not continue to sit and wait for answers. I should move on and just attribute this to one of the silliest things I ever did. Life moves on.

I miss my beard and leg hair. I look forward to their growing back.

The temporary loss of it was well worth it, though. Sometimes sacrifices must be made in the pursuit of a good cause.

It's always fascinating to learn how inherently interwoven all of our fates truly are.

I came to this city an ignorant, superstitious sailor, horrified by something I thought I'd never truly understand, but with each brilliant soul I meet I'm given some small shred of hope that things may just work out.

To all the lost ones like me, my dear friends and those I've yet to know: we'll see this through, aye? No matter the cost.

Sometimes you think something is funny, but then you realize that it really really was not.

I owe Sir Calaudrin Estardes the most profuse apology. I chose to participate I mocking him, rather than supporting a man who has done countless good for this city, and still answers my messengers.

To be clear:

I propagated a joke that Calaudrin shared a name with a Cauldron. I agreed with my Marquessa and pushed a joke that was not funny.

The money has been donated to the Iron Guard, and I will work to put what power I have to repair the damage I have done to his reputation.

A meditation on orthodoxy. On the surface the answer to what is orthodox is what is right or common or accepted. More achaic study shows not just these connotations but also a certain adherence to history, tradition. It is these shades of the traditional that give me hope that with sharing historical knowledge, I can come to some place of understanding with those who hold to such beliefs.

I already said this, but as a contrast, to explain a little of the conversation to anyone that might read it, this is what these things were to me and mine, growing up:

Paths and game trails are useful, provided you pay attention to what else might be using them. Someone or something has come before you and found the easiest way forward, enough that a little of it has been worn into the land, and if the footing is sure enough you can use them as well as the rest. Roads will get you to where you want to go much faster, but they're dangerous. You didn't build them. The people you know didn't build them. They carry soldiers, and a road near your camp means they can carry soldiers to your door. Never use roads, unless you absolutely have to, or unless you're absolutely sure they'll stay empty; and you can never be absolutely sure they'll stay empty. Stay away from them. Keep to the wilds.

Low walls are for animals, to keep them out or to keep them in, for marking out farms and pens or small villages without many soldiers. Unless you know the tribe or the colors, you are not welcome there, and you should stay away. Tall walls are what the people who want to kill you use to keep you and the rest of the world out. If you see them on the horizon, turn away. If you see them being built, turn away. Change hunting trails. Change camps. The tallest walls are city walls or castle walls. They have soldiers and archers watching and waiting, and if you are close enough to see them, they are close enough to shoot you. Never, ever go near these walls. Not for any reason. You will die.

Tall walls protect me now, of course, but I don't like them. I still feel penned in. It still feels a little like one might decide to fall on me if I linger near it too long. Like I still might catch an arrow. I won't complain if I have one to stand on when I'm trying to fight off an army, obviously. But I might still be a little twitchy.

I don't like roads either, even though I'm allowed to use them now. I'll travel down one like anyone else, but I still prefer the trees. I prefer little used paths and trails. I don't like being easily spotted when I'm traveling. Anyone can walk down a road, and anyone can guess which road you're using if they know where your destination is.

I write in sorrow that any child of the Faith might think themselves so wretched that they can kill a Godsworn scholar. Godsworn are not just workers of the Church, but the embodiment of its authority. To attack them is not to raise your hand against a man or a woman, it is to declare yourself in rebellion against the Faith and therefore against the Gods. Down such a path there is no joy, no happiness, nothing. Even if somehow the Iron Guard and the Inquisition fail to find you, even if the guilt never emerges and gnaws at your soul until you confess, the one thing you can never escape is the Gods.

Relationship Note on Luca

It has been far too long since I've written and I didn't think I had the energy to write this, but I dug down deep. Grief has a way of sapping the energy you have and so it is with a heavy heart I write about my patron, Prince Luca Grayson. It took me by surprise, his death. I know he was ever active, though his deeds were always a mystery to me, and even now the reasons he died are frustratingly bizarre. We didn't get to talk as often as I'd have liked, but I did get the pleasure of waking him up some mornings, passed out in his favorite bushes throughout the city.

We didn't get enough time. And I selfishly miss the small additions he gave my life as my patron and dear friend. Who will send me a cigarillo of hash while I sit through economic meetings? Who will wholeheartedly care about my well-being when I go off on a trip that could get me harmed, so much so he sent his own armor to keep me safe?

He spoke so well of the people he truly trusted and loved, and he was very well loved in return.

In honor of my daring, heroic patron I am going to have a garden made up in his honor. A lovely place for travelers through the city, with only the most fluffy and comfortable bushes to pass out in. The Prince Luca Grayson Memorial Park for peaceful napping. If anyone would like to help, I welcome those who loved our Prince Luca.
