Relationship Note on Costas

The man has a sense of humor. Gotta have a sense of humor about these things. Look at me, I'm all about the fucking laughing.

Competent, too, in that sneaky way where you know you better keep your fucking eyes open.

Or he might just pull that sneak on you.

(A copy of the recent Gemecittan proclamation has been left in Sylvie's journal.)

Five hundred years ago, Duchess Vedette Zaffria and Duke Raphael Rubino tore down a wall and united a city. Where once stood Quartz Hill and Crowned Hill, two castles vying for the same land, competing for the same resources, there became one: Gemecitta. It was their unity that ensured the city's survival as others throughout the Lyceum fell to the sylv'alfar.

But the houses were never truly united. For the last thousand years, Houses Zaffria and Rubino have lived in an uneasy state of cooperation, never truly trusting the other. Unlike every other noble house in the Compact, our dukes and duchesses have kept to Gemecitta and sent their heirs to represent them in Arx, afraid of betrayal for any step they might take out of their home.

This ends today. A year ago, Zaccheri Rubino, the husband of Lady Sylvie Zaffria and the heir of House Rubino, was murdered. A week ago, after murdering several innocents of Gemecitta, the same assassin ended the life of Duke Giovanni Rubino. But today, the efforts of both houses have brought this murderer to justice. Today, two scions of Gemecitta have been avenged. We have faced darkness and razed it with fire and light.

We, Duke Valkieri Rubino and Duchess Sylvie Zaffria, today declare our refusal to live in a state of fear and distrust any further. We return to Arx as new-forged leaders of our houses and the proud citizens of Gemecitta, dedicated to unity -- true unity -- in this time of tragedy and need. Our family, our citizens, our city, and the Compact deserve no less from us than our fearless defense. The Compact needs the full and selfless leadership of its rulers now more than ever. We shall not fail or falter.

In Strength,

Lord Valkieri Rubino Lady Sylvie Zaffria
Duke of Gemecitta Duchess of Gemecitta

I've been asked to help combat corruption in the Iron Guardsmen. I wasn't aware that it was a problem. However, since the task is to lead by example, and to call it out when I see it. Yes, I can do that.

But I take my oath to my fellow Watchmen seriously, as well as that to the City of Arx. I won't spy for outsiders.

Met Agnarr at The Grotto. Seems like a decent enough fellow. Big though.

Marquis Vincere is straight forward and the point. I can appreciate that. I hope he'll appreciate that I won't be a spy for him.

A mirrorborn killed my father. He sliced his hands and spilled his guts. He was dead. No, he was dying. Blood was everywhere. The bed was soaked in it. My father could not breathe, he could not speak.

A mirrorborn killed my father. I only took my knife across his neck to ease his passing. I only spilled the last of his blood to be sure.

I did it for my house. I did it for my people. I did it for the future of Gemecitta.

I did it for myself. I did it for myself. I did it for myself.

I get it, I really do. But spirits it's still disappointing to hear.

Get Kima to start training you soon, I'm already starting to miss the fact that I wont get to spar with you any longer.

I really should've made a better effort to meet with the Lady General far earlier than I managed. She is a brilliant woman with a good, reasonable head upon her shoulders. Hearty sort, too, that I think would do well in the North in the dead of winter if she ever had a reason to go up there.

I'm glad to know her.

I'm a confident person. Even before battle I lack nerves. I see a road ahead of me and I walk it.

That being said, I have to admit I was pretty fucking nervous.

I should have put warpaint on myself beforehand, just to make me more confident. I'm glad everything went so well.

To be away from the capital is a test of one's discipline. Part of it is the delightful company found there, which there are in exceptional quality and numbers. Strange how one gets used to the numbers encountered in the capital, which makes the region seem empty in comparison. Another part is one's place. After arriving the first time, establishing oneself, to be sent away so soon makes one feel as if it was all worthless. I do not fear being forgotten, of course, but events seem to move so quickly that the capital I grew used to might very well be completely changed by the time I return. I dare hope not, however. There are many I would see as I left them, healthy and happy.

Guard duties about our grounds and the Halfshav manor have been quiet, of late. A good thing. There has been one fellow I've seen in passing several times who loiters about. He doesn't seem the nefarious sort, but I would like to speak with him, next I see him. Perhaps he has an interest in work with the Redrains.

Arx is a city of secrets. Some of them are kept on purpose. Some of them are kept for good reason.

Most of them just require finding the right person to ask.

I have sent a letter to the Minister of Defense, detailing to him what I wrote to Aislin. He seemed to be...moved what I had written.

Then I met Calypso and Eirene in the stacks at the Archives, discussing more matters with them. Nothing seems to get much better, and I feel at times I'm treading water. An irony, coming from a man who was born in a desert.

It would be nice, I should say, if for once, that whenever someone came to spoke of me, they asked about the weather. Or perhaps wanted to play cards. Feels like it's 'demons this' and 'beast in the woods' that. Not that these are not important topics, but I wonder if this is how it is going to be for the foreseable future. I'd rather hope not, but, this appears to be a task that I am expertly suited for.

What a job. Perhaps next time I see Aislin, I will ask her about her griffon. That would brighten my day, I think.
