I may never go to another thing hosted by House Velenosa ever again. Well, at the very least I won't be going without armor ever again.

Theatre of the absurd, my darlings, and we're all sitting in the balcony -- and we're all watching -- and for what.

That's all we're for, you see.

To watch.

Relationship Note on Jaenelle

I know she is a strong and capable woman. She’s chosen to make me a husband, which sometimes frustrates me to no end. However, on this one, she has outdone herself. This woman not only made a life, but made me a father. Me, the Grayson Prince of not caring and doing as I please. She bestowed this on me. For this I shall be eternally grateful.

Asking someone what their favorite color is has certainly proven insightful. It's yellow. There are reasons. If you read this -- and wonder about how vague it is -- ask yourself what your favorite color is, and why. Then ask someone else. The answer may surprise. It's certainly more amusing than asking: why?

I keep finding jewelry shops all over the city that sell spider and skull jewelry. The maker's mark is a skull with a crown on it and is incorporated into the work as a clasp or a stamp.

Whoever this is has my admiration. I do love my anklet.

I have also acquired a very unnerving brooch of a carnivorous flower with teeth. It's a delightfully creative piece. And strange. Just like me.

I have finished my furniture commissions and now, I am working on organizing my store. Maybe it will open soon.

An idle thought on metalworking:

Pewter, a mixture of various metals, including - but not limited to copper and sometimes, silver - is mostly tin. It's so much softer than silver, it takes to whatever shape I please, but - it takes dings and dents with similar ease. If you overwork it, it gets dull and brittle. It doesn't need a delicate touch, it needs a determined one. That is not metaphor. It's hardly even a couplet. It's the rich, saturated color of lead --

Makes me wonder why we do not call a storm-heavy sky pewter.

I have been quite the scholar this week! Well. That's rather a bit presumptuous to write, I suppose, in this place, surrounded by real scholars. But I'm going to give myself leave to be quite proud of myself, this time. Halcyon is a terribly difficult language to learn, and I've been beavering away at it so earnestly that the waitresses at the teahouse only laugh a little bit when I try to order there. So I feel I've made significant progress!

All thanks must go to Cai Jian - there, you see, I even know what order to put the personal and familial names, although I did have to be reminded rather a lot of times before it stuck - who is an exceedingly patient teacher. She would have to be, to put up with me. Either that, or the comic relief was welcomed. It may be a bit of both.

Relationship Note on Camilla

The performance by Messere Camilla was utterly captivating to see and I was honoured to be invited to the Lord Macario's birthday party to witness it. The dance itself arresting of all my attention, to witness such a performance will forever live on in my mind.

Of course, after that and after some of the guests departed it was time for stories, brandy, cigars and cards.

Perhaps returning home a little later than expected. I don't think I woke up Arsenia.

I'm quite certain that I confused the guards at the Grayson ward gates as much as they confused me. It seems that word of Duchess Fidante's patronage has spread, and they felt compelled to bow to me as a result. Why?

After much thought, I have concluded that there are at least two plausible explanations: 1, they're scared to be scolded, or 2, they're showing her respect through me. I choose to believe that it is the latter, because she certainly doesn't have time to scold some poor man standing guard at a gate. It's also nice to think that they respect her that much.

Relationship Note on Camilla

I attended Lord Macario Malespero's birthday party, which was pleasant enough in itself. Familiar faces, good wine, ample refreshments. The lord seemed pleased with my gift, and conversation flowed easily enough.

But then, Suspire Camilla showed us her dance. Showed us her self. Showed us...

Words do grow poor. It was a remarkable feat of athleticism, of elegance and grace and ART in motion. It is something that must be experienced, and I feel like a better person for having seen it. For having witnessed such beauty, and knowing that I can forever cherish that memory. Yes.

My thanks to Lord Macario, for extending the invitation. To Master Sira for her extraordinary work in garbing the dancer.

And of course, to Suspire Camilla for a truly incomparable experience.

Arx unfolds before me, little by little. I adventure out and explore and find myself drawn to it more and more. It's still ever a stranger, but the more I get to know her the more she begins to feel like home.

So far my favorite nook that I have found in the width and breadth of Arx is a tea room called the Ignoble Steep. The tea is just soothing enough but not over done. I wonder about the owner and what they might be like. I write from a corner now, sampling my fourth cup and nibbling at threads of stray inspiration.

Thanks to Whisper House and Softest Cesare, I think the Scholar's Gala for the new library project went very well. There were little candy quills and the chocolate fountain was there. (I specifically asked for it. I accidentally wandered into an event at Whisper House once and was quite taken by the chocolate fountain.) I failed to answer the single trivia question, but I learned something new.

I'm happy the reception to this project has been so positive. I would say ten of the twelve sites are finalized, which is absolutely wonderful. These public libraries will help communities come together. Libraries are the enemy of ignorance, and we have been ignorant far too long. We have forgotten so much. People will learn the stories of the Compact and the stories of each other, and hopefully that will result in the sort of familiarity that makes for strong allies. It is harder to hate someone who is not a stranger, who has not shared with you.

Several items have been supplied for auction to benefit the Scholars - a copy of the Atlas of the Northlands, which takes me months to complete; volumes one to three of the Forgotten Library series, including the only current copy of book three, Murder Masquerade; and some of my time, whether it be simply for company, or I do your taxes, or you ask me questions and I try to answer, or whatever. Bidding is still open but I believe will close in a few days, so do make your way to Whisper House to take a look soon.

There are days mugging my husband is the only way to get him to slow down and savor the life we've built together, but I never manage to do it as long as I'd like. You want proof? I've been feeding that man since we were kids and he's still thin as a rake. I suspect if we have the privilege of growing old together, I'll be round as ever and he'll be lean, white-haired, and even more terrifying. And our man will stay as pretty and distinguished as ever, putting us both to shame, what with his lifting of men and women and responsibilities. The latter is what gives him all those muscles, you know, but it's my pie that makes him smile.

I look forward to it, the three of us on this journey forever. I'm already enjoying it.

Sometimes, a transaction in the market is much like what I imagine to be a diplomatic negotiation, but most of the screaming is just for show and more often than not everyone leaves happy. I could never be the ambassadorial type.

I came to the aid of some wounded in the Saving Grace Hospital thanks to the pounding on my door by a passing Harlequin. It felt...good to fall back on something familiar in the midst of so much uncertainty, even if it was not the way I had wished to make Lady Volcica's formal acquaintance. I spent a good deal of time commiserating with Lady Ivy as well, but I could not help but feel that my presence was as much of a terror to some as it was comfort to others. But at least She did not welcome anyone back into Her embrace this time.

Libraries have always been a place of fascination to me. I hope that either or both of Ivy Mae and Ryland grow up to have the same passion. That is part of what the library project in the Aerie is all about, to build a place for them to learn and, hopefully, fall in love with learning.

I'm taking entirely too much pleasure in the expressions in the architect's faces.

Did you know, Scholar, that some people actually come here every day and write journals?

..Oh, of course you would.

Please note that the scholars may take some time preparing your journal for others to read.

Leave blank if this journal is not a relationship

Mark if this is a private, black journal entry
