Relationship Note on Fortunato

Whatever shape was needful, this one is what you needed to become.

The world is your canvas, little brother, and I'm proud of you.

Wise and kind, a good listener.
I see you, Fortunato, or at least I think I do.

Such a talented artist. And one who speaks wisely when one takes time to really settle down into conversation with him. He does the Whispers proud.

If you've got a magical painting capable of freeing slaves in far off lands, I'm certainly interested in hearing about it.

We can talk regardless, obviously.

Relationship Note on Fortunato

The rarest friend is the one who can walk with you down a lot of different paths, from the sweet, to the silly, to the sorrowful. Or all at the same time, and making snow people as you do. Being handsome in brocade and charming in anything at all doesn't hurt, either.

Half-making. We didn't finish. And that's my fault. But in my defense, he really needed to be pushed into the snow at that moment. Really! It was for his own good. And my amusement.

He'll probably get me back. That's okay!

He's not a reformer any more than the Lenosian 'businessman' who offers 'protection' for your business in exchange for a weekly tithe. He wants something from you, but isn't at all interested in doing the work to help make it happen, and if you fail, well, it sure would be terrible if the Abyss ate everyone here.

Brass makes people feel like they have another Copper, but his demands are high and his promises vague. A Brass Knight is a hollow thing.

I've never been a fan of quiet, myself. I had to be quiet a lot growing up, which was instructive but boring. Hmm. Actually, writing that reminds me of the exception. I love the quiet of the wilderness. It isn't silent, unless something bad is about to happen. But it's quiet in a warm, alive sort of way that makes you feel like all is right in the world. And then, sometimes it gets too much and you just have to whoop at the sky.

Also, there's nothing wrong with horny shapes!

An educational wish, to be sure. But you'd have to choose your subject wisely. Not everyone is capable of staring into their greatest fear and coming through unscathed. I'm not sure I could do it! Maybe if I knew my own greatest fear...

Relationship Note on Fortunato

No time spend in discussion of important matters is time wasted. And we are a society of artists as much as warriors, farmers as much as nobles - the different viewpoints are important, I think. I would never consider you are nobody, Master Fortunato. You are after all a Grayhope, as Dame Thena and Father Aureth were. If any member of the Faith cannot make time to listen to the concerns of someone from a family who gave as great a gift to us as those two then something has gone wrong.

Relationship Note on Fortunato

Again, I do not disagree - and on either side we must not see the Abandoned as one group, but know that some are close to us in style, some far away, some friendly, others not, and some are beyond redemption no matter how much love might be in our hearts. But, if the matter falls to the Templars, we are of the Faith Militant. We are an army of Gloria, of the Faith. We will see things as armies do, in military ways, and our solutions will match. This is why I suggest and encourage nobles to take the lead on such things, why we supported Princess Reese, why we supported Baroness Lucita.

Relationship Note on Fortunato

I do not disagree that many inside the compact can fall to similar temptations - and do. Though I am not aware of whole families doing so, and if you are both ourselves and Prince Laric would, I am certain, welcome that information with a heavy heart. That is a different style of threat, and one where I hope people have every confidence in the Faith and the Inquisition to oppose.

I also do not advocate slaughter. Many of the abandoned in the Oathlands, for example, hold corrupted variances of our own Faith. Now in that corruption there is danger, but I do not think them an enemy and I would hope they could be convinced to bend the knee and thus agree to remove the threat they pose to us. What I advocate is holding our land so that those who choose not to rejoin the Compact do not encroach onto the roads that we need to move our supplies, our silver, our armies. So they stop being able to strike at will when raiding into the heart of our lands. You say, and others say, that those who choose to side with the enemy are also victims. And perhaps I would agree. But, being a victim does not make you innocent. Nor does it excuse you from the consequences of the choice that you made in which type of victim you wished to be. Nor does it relieve us of our duties to safeguard our people, our faith and true innocents.

Nothing will make us fully safe, you are correct. But that does not mean we should stop trying, striving for a place where people are as safe as we can make them. And it does not mean that we cannot push back the threat so that at least our homesteads are protected and instead the battle takes place at the edges of civilisation rather than at its heart. It does not mean we cannot do something to stem the constant flow of dead.

Were you ever an outer child?

Relationship Note on Fortunato

I have an inner child. Right now it's keeping me up, rolling from one side of my belly to the other, pausing now and then to push on my bladder, which has me living in the Back Rooms' bathroom for fear of accidents. And then I'm pretty sure the craving for fish is coming from this same inner child. Fish... and chocolate.

But I'm actually pretty sure that wasn't what you meant.

I don't know that I've ever been prone to frolicking, but I will credit my inner child with the sense of wonder, curiosity and shameless bravery which are required to be a good and proper scientist. Were I to leave those qualities unchecked by rationality, patience and a due touch of caution, I'm not certain I could consider that child inner at all, but were I all logic and reason, neither could I properly call myself scientist.

Should I ever find some desire to frolic bubbling up unbidden, I will send word along to assure your data is complete and correct.

Does that mean we should not strive towards it?

The body is healthiest in balance. I mean no blaspheme to Our Lady of Change, I am not proselytizing the grandeur of stasis -- balance in a living thing, is in a constant state of motion, of change. But imbalance on a grand scale breeds sickness. When the blood rises too strong and the skin reddens and hardens and ears pound with the internal drums of rage, men can fall to apoplexy or their blood can spoil and cause pustules to form. Blood must be drawn away from those areas, herbs given to cleanse and rejuvenate the blood. If the black bile grows too strong, it can drive a man to depression, their organs may fail and their spleen can even rupture.

We are all imbalanced, but we try to find the path to walk, the point on the scales in which, if just for a moment, all is aligned.

Sure, but you and I are reading his shit because we are old gutter rats gone lazy and less bitty in our old age. Why are so many rich important people reading to get offended?

I have nothing to say about the Inquisition doing its job. I've got my own job to do, and I'm sure that whatever happened to that man in life, and whatever choices he made, Death will take him back all the same.
