Relationship Note on Felicia

It was nearly a year ago my sister died. I see, now, how when the Queen was lost to us, we turned to Lagoma. Felicia's death pried the stone that made the rest of us glitter all the more from our family. Or so it's felt, this last year.

But she wouldn't have wanted that.
And She doesn't.

We will never be the same with her gone. But that should be the way of things when you've had the luck of being close to someone who aimed so directly for life's fullness. Fel's memorial skull reminded me of that, so I owe a thanks to the one who made it.

I am pleased to learn that House Grayson plans to recognize Dame Felicia Harrow in the Hall of Heroes.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Dame Felicia was kind enough to indulge my curiosity on a specific topic of which she had considerable knowledge. From that one conversation, I found her to be articulate, passionate and dedicated to a pursuit that extended beyond herself alone. Though I cannot say I knew her well, she held my admiration.

May the Queen welcome you home.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Felicia died a heroic dead. Doesn't change the fact she's dead. But her sacrifice may have stopped something -nasty- from getting into our world. So I thank her for that.

Relationship Note on Felicia

I miss my friend Felicia more than I can frame in words. Last night I poured two tumblers of whiskey, one for me and one for her. I just sat with her memory, her bravery and perseverance, her smile. As for the work she left unfinished, the rest of us will have to step into those traces, help pull the load.

Relationship Note on Felicia

I don't have words right now, but I hope to have them soon. For now, I'll say the expected thing.

You will be missed, dear friend. The Explorers will celebrate your life as we have all others who have come before you. You were an unsung hero of the Compact that the Compact didn't know it needed.

I will write a ranting, rambling entry later that includes remembrances and exploits; maybe even some of the more unbelievable ones as well.

When words find me again.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Seems Felicia's gone on the Wheel before me. That wasn't expected.

There was a lot of stuff we didn't see eye to eye on, but there was a lot of stuff we agreed on, too. For someone who was a knight with ties to the Iron Guard, and who was trying to get silked - she wasn't so bad. Not so bad at all.

She's going to be missed, though. And not just because she made me a promise she can't keep any more.

Relationship Note on Felicia

I did not know Dame Felicia incredibly well, but I would certainly call us more than acquaintances. She struck me as someone who managed to be both incredibly practical and yet would run into a fire if a situation necessitated it. I did, in fact, quite literally see her run into a fire. She was very passionate about her family and their well-being; she reminded me of a mother bear, like the ones we so often see in the Northlands. I am grateful to have gotten to know her and some of her history, and feel honored that she even put some trust in me.

Relationship Note on Felicia

I invited Dame Felicia to tea in our library and we had a conversation where she placed all my ducks in a row.
What a remarkable, knowledgeable woman.
I should invite her more often.

Relationship Note on Felicia

The most recent shop gossip is about Fel and the question she put before the Assembly.

Most of what I've heard is mixed, but it would be: wagging fingers because we never speak of our family's past, doubt that we have any ties to nobility, jokes about not forgetting our friends and neighbors in the Lowers when we're elevated, irritation, well-meaning and on our behalf, I suppose, about the path being made so difficult as to be impossible.

What I've heard is most clearly and consistently is pride, though. I've heard so many variations of Marquessa Mia Riven's words about Felicia that I feel I can draw out most of the truth of them. That my sister has done so much to help others that the Marquessa would give Fel her time and would speak in her favor...

Yes. Proud.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Growing up without much of anything but a family that always sticks together, it's easy to forget that that bit's worth way more than what's scarce. We're all so different, all off doing our separate things, but when I need someone I can trust, I know where to go. Always.

So if me doing my things ever thrust me into the Queen's embrace (again?), Felicia has the right to let my black journal bore her to tears. Though, let's face it, she's going before I do.

Dame Harrow provided quite the challenge in the Grand Melee of the Tournament of Roses today. One that I was unable to overcome this time around, but that I was grateful to face all the same.

Relationship Note on Felicia

While an admirable defense, you failed to see the point.

In both cases, people died and were mourned. In both cases necessity, or a higher cause, demanded another fill the void left with their death.

And in both cases, someone failed to do as they should and sparked outrage.

Whether a special sword or a title, once either is obtained, the weight and consequences of that choice follow. The actions of those with such increased duties are looked upon with greater scrutiny.

Because a title with a "coronet" comes with the lives that depend upon the decisions of their liege, as a special sword is more than a blade with a fancy name.

Do you see now?

Relationship Note on Felicia

Philosophy and the study of logic and ethics may have gone out of fashion around the time of the Crownbreaker Wars, but they are always worth revisiting.

You may wish to look up Markhos of Sanctum, who wrote on logical fallacies such as the fallacy of relative privation.

People can be concerned about two things.

Sometimes the second worry makes the first easier to bear. Things that may be otherwise overwhelming, such as the possibility of eminent death and widespread destruction, especially when preparations have been made and one finds oneself going over the same thoughts over and over again until they are on the brink, are made less so by having something like, say, scandal over a title bequest, to focus on.

I know it is difficult for you to comprehend, so allow me to put it in terms you'll understand.

I could not be happier about Dame Felicia's promotion to the officer corps of the King's Own. She has acquitted herself well in recent expeditions, and has richly earned the rank of Knight Lieutenant.

Welcome, Knight Lieutenant Felicia. There is a good deal of paperwork to be done. But I am sure you will strike it down as well as you do the enemies of the Compact.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Recently I met Dame Felicia Harrow for some training. I have a task coming up, yet I feel overly rusty. Not to mention with Mandate's reforging, I needed to put some time in the training grounds. Make no mistake, the woman hits as hard as my war-hammer does. Still, plenty of banter, good conversation and some lessons learned on both sides. I held my own far better than I imagined. Alas though, the match was hers. Hit me in the helm so hard I saw my departed Mirabel! I heard bells for a while... heard some tweeting birds.
