It is difficult for me to say if the tour of Stormward March went "well" considering the tragedy that befell us. Certainly everything else seemed to go as planned, but when one of your kin is crushed to death by a portion of the statue of your founder... that puts a damper on things.
The man who owned the cart came by the Kay a couple of days later, hat in hand and fear in his eyes. They started in front of the blacksmith and his reins snapped, is what he said, keeping his head low as if I'd order it cut off. It was an accident, that much was apparent on inspecting the horses and the cart. He could have remained silent and I can't say I'd have ever known.
In the end, I thanked him for his honesty and told him to go home to his family. I may have a reputation for being iron-handed, but I'd hope that our people don't see me as a tyrant.

You are gone now, and I knew you were gone the moment I saw the stone fall. I ran to lift it, pregnant as I was, holding on to that little bit of hope that Marquis Ford and I could get you free in time. It was for naught. We wanted you to live but we knew you were gone.
I'm glad you enjoyed borrowing my leather armor, bright aubergine and lurid green, covered in musical notes. I know you loved music, just as I did. I sing prayers in your memory. May the Queen of Endings and Beginnings give you a new and harmonious beginning when your turn on the Wheel comes.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night...
... and another soft star is added to the sky. I didn't know Lady Elara Kennex well, but the acts of kind selflessness that caused her death creates an ache in my stomach for the loss of her. My heart goes out to her family and friends, those that knew her love first hand, for the loss must be great.

I sit here, pen in hand, the sky above me as I keep an eye out for danger to the ship and I try to put into words such ephemeral yet overwhelming things as the emotions and thoughts that rattle through me with all of the grace and silence of stampeding horses.
Like the tide, I find some thoughts and feelings come in, then others replace them as they go out.
You're gone.
And yet I knew you not well.
But your actions, through them I think I could know you and we would have been friends.
You saved lives, and the price of this was sacrificing your own.
I knew the moment I saw that stone come down on you, I knew you couldn't live and yet I hoped. Fool that I am I hoped I could save you as you saved others. And I failed.
Oh true, there was nothing I could have done. I knew this, and still I hoped. And as I saw the light die in your eyes so too did that hope.
But I will do one thing for you, a gift I give to each who has left this life as I watch. I will keep your memory, and in that way a part of you remains.

I return from a few days immersed in work to hear news of Lady Elara's passing. While we were not close, I did consider her a friend. I find I feel sadness and admiration in deep and equal measure for her sacrifice. I found her to be both competent in work and kind as a person. I will miss her.

Today I saw your name be made black on the Refectory inside your former headquarters. When they said you died sacrificing your soul and body for someone else; when the news arrive, I primarily thought you foolish. I thought- "To what end? Ours is the fire that burns and ever-so dwindles, why douse it with the waters of another's calamity?" And the more I thought on it, the more foolish I felt; the more dawning the truth was, to me, and perhaps to others.
The essence of love, is sacrifice. And Inquisitors are naught but full of sacrifice. To love is to put one-self at disadvantage; to love is to set aside one's own wordly and mortal boundaries for the sake of one other, or others. Then I understood that the essence of the Inquisition, is love, and soon a correlation with you was ultimately made. Your life of grief and loss prepared you for this moment, you were the best among us because you were prepared to lose everything without hesitation for your love for others. Because you knew what matters most.
The flame of your words were always cool, tender and compassionate. In our hands lies the responsibility of hoping to match and learn from an inkling of your legacy, Lady Elara.
Your cycle may be finished, but your ideals will live on forever.

Thankfully this young woman saw fit to lend a hand with these trade contracts you see. Normally, I'd have been suspicious of someone lending aid to a near stranger but it seems like the majority of the people I've met in Arx are just more genuine and up front than elsewhere. Trade is essential to the foundations of this society and when it can be accomplished without spilling blood, then good. I'm grateful to Lady Elara Kennex and whomever groomed her to be such a savvy business minded individual.
So the moral of the story is, I guess I don't /have/ to take everything.
Although my jest is a bit morbid, I do hope that future generations of Seraceni will get it.
