Timing...

Even as the hammer falls and rings out its clarity of steel, my return has come at an unfortunate time for all, but perhaps a fortunate few will see the benefits of my skills. Will my foreign skills be enough to see a few through these dark times?

Relationship Note on Mabelle

The Heart of Laurent

A Sun in the coldest nights and a woman that is as beautiful as she is a master with words. A fashion sense to make both brighter and to light the mind of fancier times and warmer days. She does well for Laurent as their Voice and Minister of their house's people. I will have to find more time to converse with her about many subjects.

Relationship Note on Zakhar

The Wild Minded

I met a very curious man. a Man that has seen many years of strife, of vengeful tides and the madness that creeps upon the world. I see him, I see me there within the light of his eyes that tumble away into the dark of madness from loss and grief unbearable by most. How long can someone hold the madness behind the iron will of the walls he has raised in his mind. What is beyond those defenses he has erected and what horrors await us all beyond the walls of Arx? If I live, will this man be what I become? Is it really that bad to consider, at least he still lives where many faces I will never see again.

I attended a wonderful session of teaching and learning organized by Lady Kaia Malvici. She is excellent at organizing and instructing students. I learned so much from her about investigation and hope to learn more from her in future.

Several other instructors were there, each skilled and ready to teach. Cirroch learned some very important things as well. I am very happy I attended.

I was treated to wonderful hospitality by Lord Haakon and Lady Medeia Eswyn. Their hall is a wonderful place to gather and visit. I look forward to spending more time enjoying being their guest.

The second entry has been submitted for the literary competition.

Needless to say, I have asked Victus to flex his pectoral muscles a few times so I can picture what is going on in the book.

Maxene was laughing at the end of it and I can just imagine a few fighters that I know who would most certainly be on par with those in this time.

How many more will be coming? Fiction? Non-Fiction?

Sang this at the shanty gather. It's a winter rowing song for the leaner years before my people turned Prodigal. The Seraph of Eswynd Rock hates it.

"Winter Winds"

When the hungry winds of winter blow,
When the rocks will grow no more but snow
And the fishing nets have naught to show,
What must be done, we know.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

For in lean hard years of famine fame
The Goddess grants what the bold can claim,
Warriors of Eswynd earn your names,
To the longships we hove.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

We set to sea with naught but water,
What food remains with our wives and daughters,
We’ll live or die by the foemen’s slaughter,
A reaving we must go.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

Three icy days by the East Wind cast
Afore Maelstrom's coast is spied at last,
None but the brave will break their fast,
When Eswynd steel we show.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

We’re upon their shore with last light's gloam
No warning had but our rowing drum,
Take what you can 'ere the Serpents come
And leave naught for the crows.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

We'll take their silver but prize their grain,
Red our spears by the stubborn stained,
We'll live, we'll reave, and we'll fight again,
Heave for the longship's hold.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

Overland we hear the horseman’s call,
Fast back to sea or ye’ll be their thrall,
Fly to the longships, one and all,
Set sail for Eswyndol.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

From returning ships a horn blast rings,
Dry fish, stale bread are the fare of Kings
Until the white isles grow green with spring,
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.
Blow, ye winter winds, blow.

My twin and I are back in the same city. I do not know if Arx (and Klaus) are prepared for the combination. I have missed her spirit and view of the world. She know many interesting and wonderful people. I look forward to spending more time getting to know them.

Redesign of the first pot, it didn't have a way to release the pressure! I have taken the design of a tea kettle and hammered the steel into a cylinder which then has a second chamber within. One for the fire, this should keep things contained and not able to be put out if the water boils over, another to hold the water with a vent, allowing for pressure to be released. Though I did not wish for all of the pressure to be released right away so I made the vent small. This would prove to be a good idea later, and I'm still curious to what occurred to cause the launch.

I thought that putting a small sliding door into the front of the pot would allow for ease of adding more wood to fuel the fire within. Scholar, this proved even more dangerous as the fires got hotter I had to find a glove to be able to open the door which allowed the fire within to jump out. I'm happy to report that my leathers did not catch fire and helped keep my knees safe, though one of the kits was very angry with me for a moment and would not come out from under the bushes in the garden for quite some time after that little flicker leaped out.

While I was fighting with the cat to come out of the bushes, I scratched myself on the bush, and had a mild panic about which bush it was that I have brushed against. It was in this moment that the second pot decided to make a very loud whistling which came to a sudden stop launching itself into the nights sky. Thankfully it didn't rain metal down like the first time, though I was visited by the guard again to verify what the neighbors described as a crazy old man screaming at a cat then a bush as something took off into the nights sky.

I am happy to report that the barrel was found mostly in one piece down by the beaches.

Going to attempt to make a stronger steel. The pot should not be flying.

Times like this the burden of leadership is a heavy one. Trhing to decide which of conflicting advice to follow, calculating expenses and estimated loss of lives... feeling sick inside at knowing one is sending good men into a situation where several may die is difficult. Necessary but difficult. It reminds me of what Prince Talen used to say at Setarco about knowing he had to send men to their deaths.

Ever see a person and just think, 'they deserve to be punched in the face?' and then they open a pie-hole and your thoughts are totally confirmed? Yeah.

And no, not going to say who.

There is much to be said for the simple fare of bread, cheese and a bottle of cider, shared between friends in a barn. It levels people, and it's something that I should do more often.

The feast of sea shanties was a splendid evening! The food and drink were plentiful - perhaps too much so in the case of the latter, the hall was packed with the best people, and each performance offered an opportunity to learn about the performer or where they come from or what they value. There was no shortage of entertainment, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned and hope others did, too.

I especially would like to acknowledge Lord Haakon, Lady Zoey, Lord Wash, Savio, and Lady Ophira for their contributions to the evening. It couldn't have been a night of sea shanties without them sharing as they did. I continue to be in awe of the talent and passion of the people around me.

I have finally completed my new collection of furniture, though I am extremely nervous as to how it might be received. Overall I am quite proud of the quality of the pieces, though on some there was some room for improvement. I had neither the time nor the silver to completely rework them. Should this set prove successful I can focus on my next project, something much more artistic. My previous sculpture was appraised seperately by the Marquessa and the First Liberator. I can only say I was deeply honored by their praise.

It was just moments ago that the news of Archscholar Sina's death has come to my attention, my heart has known no sorrow as it does now. I did not know them well. in fact, we only met once in the Shrine of the 13th but their words and wisdom moved me, and their incites into my woes lifted my own burdens.

I do not know whom to give my condolences to, as all of Arvum has became a bit darker. I feel the pull of my heart to use my knowledge to do something, but I am at a loss. Seek out the scholars of Vellichor and offer my aid? Investigate the murder? I am but one person in the chaotic world, but I must do something.

If someone lays their eyes upon this message, and understands my sorrows, tell me how I can help or who I can speak to.

To extinguish knowledge is the greatest sin.

I am as a breath: too soft and subtle to heed from afar, too pure and promising to ignore up close. And sometimes, little incendiary, the waver of the candle burns so low all it takes is that breath.
Or the well-misplaced brush of a silken sleeve to set the rest of a life alight.

The Sangrian Blueclaw Vine has finally been coaxed to bloomed here in Arx, a rare flower outside of the Caldera where it grows. Quite different than what I’ve seen here, it took a combined effort of a group to encourage it to actually grow in foreign soil. I’ve been unable though to pollinate and propagate it, so. I believe I’ll organize a trip to see if we can’t track and trap a few of the nightbirds that do that job. Perhaps even bring supplies to the S’Ki tribe and pay homage to the Wader. I’ve invited a few people over to look at the flower, especially how it blooms at night and glows. I have to restrict myself from eating too many of the leaves, they’re quite delicious although I don’t believe others have acquired the taste. A very strong taste, thick texture.

A new Radiant of the Whisper house was appointed. I don’t know enough about them to comment, but it seemed journal-worthy to note the new Radiant is a person named Anisha. I’d think the Whispers would be a group that baroness Calla would find things in common in how they go about attaining peaceful solutions to problems instead of the usual tactic of “Have you tried to poke it with a sword yet?”.

I’m comparing more between the Caldera and the far northern spiritualist beliefs. There’s a stark difference in certain aspects, and yet still there’s similarities no matter the great distance and time that’s separated these beliefs. I’m still researching though one particular spirit in order to learn more. I hope I’m able to cross paths with more knowledgable people on this topic.

A few new people met this week. I managed to speak with lady Adalyn Clement, she was my companion at the feast a few weeks ago and I want to see her cavalry tactics in action. There was Raven, a young warrior who I think has a lot of skill when it comes to individual fighting and while we might not get along, I have a good amount of respect simply because she’s a capable fighter. Prince Patrizio wears charisma like a fine cloak, and I’m looking forward to bringing new tactics and help them in the upcoming war.
