Today, I am about to do the hardest thing I have ever attempted in my life.

I pray to the Gods I can be strong enough for this.

We could sing it back at them. If you can make it catchy enough, it'll get stuck in their heads. Revenge is ours.

Scholar, last time I sat with you, I discussed curiosity and teaching. I suppose it should be little wonder that in sating that curiosity with a skim through recent journals that I find myself teaching. I certainly didn't expect the combination of my husband, my twin, and peacocks to be the subject.

While I was not present for the exchange between Neilda and Haakon, I feel I know them both well enough to make a few assumptions:
1. My sister is, in fact, a being that needs to be given leave to soar. I have written a journal to this point in the past. She is also no bird expert (for such things, I would refer to Duke Aiden), leading me to believe that her prior experience with Duke Michael's peacock, Sir Struttington, and her disdain for limitations led to a thought process along the lines of "dazzling bird plus freedom equals peacock and flying." Side note, now that I think about it, Nel and Strut are of similar disposition - though my sister has yet to peck my hand for a grape.
2. Nel's use of "fly" to equate with freedom, soaring, isn't appropriately applied to peacocks in the way it might be applied to gulls or eagles or ravens. While peacocks can become airborne, their flight is largely limited to getting to their high roosting places and safely descending back to the ground.
3. My husband recognized the implied meaning and incongruity of my sister's words and responded correctly within the context.
4. The context being a deadly fight in which economy of language is important.

In hindsight, Scholar? I should have expected this combination. Have you met my sister or my husband? That really is all anyone should need to keep in mind.

Relationship Note on Haakon

To my Lord Haakon of House Eswynd,

Peacocks, like most males, may fly if you launch them from the right angle. The problem is that, like most males, they have a problem landing after falling a great distance.

Warm Regards,

General Piccola of House Tessere.

DEATH TO THE BEEKEEPERS. DEATH TO THE LAURENTS!

Honestly, I hear it so often, I'm thinking of composing it. It has been quite a while since I sat behind a clavichord.

Listen, you try sounding sane while you're busy avoiding a mace heading straight into your face while your brother-in-law is yelling at you not to play with your food. I was under a lot of pressure at the time, don't judge me!

Relationship Note on Haakon

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but peacocks and peahens both fly. Quite well, actually. You can find them on rooftops and in trees just like you would crows or sparrows. Beware peacocks in a tree, by the way. Its a terrifying lesson to learn the hard way.

It's been over a year. No letters, no news.
A room was never meant to feel so empty.

I should have had him painted so his children would remember his face.
I never thought I would need to.

Are you coming home?
Mangata grant you rains and calm seas, I can do nothing for you.

One of my least favorite things about swords, axes, pikes, and knives is that they so frequently point in the wrong direction.

Scholar. Yes, it's me Zakhar. Again...
I setup a little table in the garden for the Guard when they arrive. It only seemed right to offer them some soup, biscuits, and maybe something to drink. They have taken to simply showing up before any screams in their general direction. And tonight, they cheered me on as I took an extended amount of time to explain the primary of mathematics to them and how pressure can be an issue.

I had the fortune of being able to meet a gentleman by the name of Ripley who allowed me access to their forge to try making a stronger steel. I am happy to report that the steel is in fact stronger, and apparently better for flight. Which, again...Is not the option that we'd prefer in this design.
There would be too many roofs to have to fix.

However when flight was achieved the guards that were there with me then had to explain to the next shift of gaurds as to what had happened. Which meant that another lesson on mathematics and pressure was required.
I did not expect to be a teacher to so many in one night. And might want to start looking to teaching as my next profession if this is to continue.

Alas, I digress. The pot was found in the middle of a pond in the Lyceum ward with several of the Black Fox's patrons staring at the object. It was mostly in one piece. Made a heck of a crater upon impact.
I have an idea that if this doesn't work as the intended that perhaps my Patron would be interested as using it.

Relationship Note on Neilda

"Don't tell me what to do, Haakon! I'm a peacock, you have to let me fly."

"Peacocks are the male birds, and NONE OF THEM FLY, NELL."

An actual exchange of words shouted during a life and death fight. Even if the living were all ours and the dying were all theirs.

Relationship Note on Sunaia

Years ago a special place to Limerance was built in Nilanza as part of the Pilgrimage path and ever since the Hall of Vows was completed I have known that it is the one place I would wish to be married. It is in the one place where the Nilanzan people who matter so much to me, my family, and the sacred rites of Limerance all come together.

I have been fortunate enough to see that dream come to fruition.

Recently, in the House of Vows, Sunaia accepted me as her husband and joined Malespero in a match that should secure the bonds of friendship between Malespero and Ashford for many years to come.

I am both humbled, and overjoyed, to be tackling this new phase of life with her by my side. Welcome to Malespero Sunaia.

Curiosity.

Yes, Scholar, I know one word isn't really worth submitting. If you're going to be snarky, I'll write it myself! The fact that you're writing down my side of the conversation tells me you get a rise out of this. Yes, fine, I'll continue.

I've joked before that curiosity may be my most deadly trait, my fatal flaw. There isn't always a reason why I want to know something, other than to know it. I have no immediate plans for most of the knowledge I acquire. It all gets tucked away in my memory for - well, for safe keeping? Just in case. My very own library of information to call upon if ever needed. No, Scholar, I don't think I should consider joining your discipleship. That is hardly the case! I just don't seem to be cut out for discipleship, after all.

Back to my point. Yes, I had one! It turns out, I have quite the talent for teaching, and I enjoy doing it. My professorship at the college was fairly short-lived; there were some. Well. Points of disagreement. Not that the college isn't an incredible institution! It just wasn't for me. A while back, I had this realization around the same time Princess Cerys had decided to sell her private home. I'd been there before, meeting with her to discuss some events, and the place was gorgeous. And I bought it on a whim.

I've had carpenters and painters and such in doing a lot of work to transform it into a place of learning. There is a lecture hall/classroom - that will be used soon! Messere Evaristo and I are working together on a public discussion. I've converted the ballroom into an incredible conservatory, which can still be used as a ballroom, or a meeting space, or just a place to relax among the plants. There's a proper apothecary garden going in come spring. And I'll have an office where I can meet with patients or students privately if they do not wish to meet in their home or elsewhere.

I've had so many new students recently, and I've been offering lessons everywhere from the couch at the Black Fox to the dining table at home. It will be nice to be able to consolidate my efforts, provide formal structure to my students, and start putting all of my curiosity to use for others. Some of my curiosity.

This year has been good for battles at sea.

Led a number of our longships alongside Redreef, Blackshore, and Bloodstorm in a merry little skirmish against Abandoned at Horderacht Isle.

A word to the wise: seeking to surround your foes does you little good unless you have an advantage in numbers. Just ends up spreading out your force, and gets you punched in the teeth in detail.

No one tell the Shavs, though.

Wise general, remember that no battle runs smoother than that which you have concealed from the enemy until you execute it.

To know how to recognize an opportunity in war, and take it, benefits you more than anything else.

I'm back from Bastion after a long 'vacation'. Though in reality I just spent the entire time training and hitting soft things with sharp things. It was nice to get back to what I'm good at, and a nice reminder that I can't let myself go soft or lose my edge... I can't let Gloria or the Grayson name down. Not that I don't enjoy the life I've created -- I just can't let myself get too distracted by pleasantries.

Pasquale and Sunaia's wedding at the House of Vows in Nilanza was perfect. The weather might be a touch chilly still, but it's far warmer than the capital, absent snow, with waters just pleasant enough still for swimming. The subsequent days spent hosting a few notable guests, showing them my march and much of its loveliness, helped lighten my heart in such unexpected ways. The joy of deepening acquaintances, the rarest pleasure of being seen and understood, the sheet delight of witnessing silliness from oft-restrained sources.

I feel fortunate today, both to have such fine friends and to see my family grow so well. Lady Sunaia is a fine addition to House Malespero, and I hope, come spring, that we can set to answering all she asked for, the least of which will be planted once the ground is soft enough.

Sing me a song of your sorrows,
I'll let it fill up all my tomorrows.
Sing me a song of your despair,
With it I will prepare...
A heart made of clay,
And at your feet it will lay.
